That texture though for home made packaged noodles is unparalleled, their wavy noodles are killer

Aren't they just the same mass produced by that taiwanese company a-sha that also makes the trader joes version?

Crack in cookie form. So bad yet so good. :drunk:

Basically cookies made with pieces of candied lard(?) and candied wintermelon.

They are expensive but 100% worth it, I received some last Christmas and have been wanting to get them since. They are really perfect for an easy meal if you are not sure what to have.

Don't flame me but Asian (Chinese specifically) desserts aren't that good IMHO.

The whites have that culinary market on lock :lol

Hondaracer 08-29-2024 09:17 AM

Traditional Chinese food is the yuckiest cuisine out there imo lol.

Very few cuisines have weird flavours or textures globally. Traditional Chinese food covers both in the worst possible ways lol. Can’t remember what I was watching some travel show or sonthing but I think it was in HK and the host was going on about how they have 4-5 different interpretations of “gelatinous” textures? Lol yuck

CivicBlues 08-29-2024 09:28 AM

No idea what you're going on about Honda...lol wtf is Traditional Chinese food? What region are you talking about?

I'm part Cantonese like I'm guessing most of you chin-holes here so don't put me on blast. I find Cantonese food to be the blandest type of "Chinese" food out there (everything steamed, boiled and the taste cooked out of it) and unfortunately it's the one that most Westerners are exposed too. AND they usually eat the wierdest shit out there because you know, starvation diets. The only other one most people are familiar with is Szechuan but most of the time here it just means Cantonese style food doused with chillis and peppers till your mouth goes numb.

And yes, Cantonese desserts are garbage their paletes don't understand "Sweet". Don't get me started on HK cafe bastardized Western Cuisine/Deserts too.

You two shut your mouths, don't talk bad of the motherland and it's food.

Steaming is used, most dim sum are steamed, but boiling is rare unless you call braising boiling as well. I don't know what Chinese food you've been having. Stir fry, deep frying, grilling, roasting, and a lot of dishes taking multiple steps in preparation.

Even the French recognize Chinese cooking as one of the most diverse and complex, and they are the French.

There is a reason why white people are fat, we love those sugars and fats.

Hondaracer 08-29-2024 09:51 AM

My exposure is the dinners for kids birthdays, 100 day things or whatever. All the shark fin soups, entire fishes, etc. maybe my labelling is not correct

Szechuan I’m definitely down with

Cantonese cooking /= All of Chinese Cooking

And yes stir frying and roasting is common in Cantonese but grilling less so and both suffer from being over-cooked and under-seasoned most of the time. Just my opinion just as some like steak medium rare, others like it well done.

Also, Honda isn't Chinese unless I've been missing something for years lol

He lives in Vancouver, he might as well be at this point :lol

That's fair that Cantonese cooking != all of chinese cooking, buy boiling is extremely rare in Cantonese style. I only ever boil dumplings.

mikemhg 08-29-2024 11:02 AM

Man I've been to so many 100-day dinners and Asian parties.

The cakes and cookies suck. Fuck that stupid fruit sponge cake, fuck those moon cakes, or any of that jelly/snotty sloppy sweet stuff, it's all crap.

I find even the Chinese bakeries when trying to do "white" desserts like cookies and cakes, just doesn't hit the same (places like Saint Germain Bakery), something is just...off.

Only places I go to are Chong Qing and Ban Bu Xin I think it’s called downtown

roastpuff 08-29-2024 11:10 AM

The cookies/cakes are adapted to a Chinese palate, it's a different taste preference. Much more subtle/milder than Western flavour profile.

My in-laws (Guangdong villagers) prefer things to be quite bland, like they barely use any salt etc. Every time I cook it's like a flavour bomb hits them because I actually use spices and seasoning lmao.

OTOH I have had some excellent Cantonese cuisine with tons of flavour at some of the well-regarded Cantonese restaurants in town (Chef's Choice, Dynasty etc.)

I came across the video below that talks about the 'Saint Germain Bakery' style - it's the result of Russian and Japanese influences as a result of WWII.

I find Saint Germain a bit meh and none of the Chinese bakeries here are particularly good. God forbid you get a cake from T&T, those are horrid. I'll be honest with you though I'm not a huge fan of Chinese bakery style cakes. None of them are particularly good here. For some reason even the Japanese chain desserts that open here tastes off. The stuff I had in Japan tastes better.

For cakes I prefer specific western stores. A lot places though make them way too sweet.

The Chinese bakers does bread better imo.

When I think Chinese dessert I think of the sweet dimsums, various different kind of egg tarts, and the sweet soups. Chinese stores typically suck at baking lol

Not sure if its specifically Szechuan, but two places I like that does the chili/spice is Chuan Chili House near Coq Center, and JFY Restaurant on Austin.

Hondaracer 08-29-2024 11:56 AM

Pine house bakery makes some good Chinese cakes and egg tarts

Also those coconut buns damn
