Details about the trade and the protected first round pick from the Rangers:
Centre Filip Chytil, defenceman Victor Mancini and a conditional first-round pick will go from the Rangers to the Canucks in the trade, according to ESPN's Emily Kaplan. Defencemen Jackson Dorrington and Erik Brannstrom will go with Miller to New York.
Friedman reports the first-round pick is top 13 protected for the 2025 NHL Draft. If it falls inside the top 13 slots, the Canucks will receive an unprotected first-round pick in 2026 instead.

Went to take a look at how we acquired JT Miller in the first place, and its interesting to say the least.
We traded away a 1st, 3rd, and Mazanec? to Tampa Bay back in 2019 to get JT Miller.
Not sure how people felt at the time how that trade, but I can only imagine lots of skepticism taking on a "locker room problem" and losing a 1st round pick.
Fast forward 5 years and we've gotten some of JT Millers prime production years. The guy is 5 years older, has a NMC, and a long expensive contract as an anchor now (not to mention the locker room thing is even more present)
We receive, in my opinion equal if not more than what we paid to acquire him 5 years ago (the 1st pick is the equalizer imo). No retention on the contract either.
I don't know, it seems like value-wise we did a pretty tidy job tying a bow at the end of this whole thing? Are we getting a little too emotional with our players and overvaluing them?

He was a 3rd or 4th line player on TB when we got him and he’s a 100 point player now… so no I don’t think we got good value.
Chytil’s career best is 45 points.

I do not think that Allvin is done with trades. The team cleared 3.5 million in cap space with the Miller trade.
-plenty of time before the March 7th trade deadline.

Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that the club has acquired defenceman Marcus Pettersson and forward Drew O'Connor from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for forward Danton Heinen, defenceman Vincent Desharnais, the rights to forward Melvin Fernström and a conditional first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft (acquired from New York Rangers).
Whoever said we were flipping our pick right away was spot on.
