Very tidy business for McDavid... if he didn't sign and dragged it out through the season he risked alienating the fanbase against him and possibly leaving with no assets in return making enemies left and right within the org and Edmonton.
Now he's basically saying here's a massive fucking discount, if we don't win this year you can trade me for a low cap hit and a massive haul back in the 26-27 season and I leave town with everyone knowing I did whatever I could do to win here.

smart move by him and his agent for sure. quite impressed here. oilers either take this and win a damn cup or they look like fools and no one blames mcdavid for leaving!

For the trivia fans out there... Cootes in the first 18 year old to make the team out of camp since..... Peter Nedved.
61 games played, 10 goals and 6 assists but -21 on the year lol.
Cootes likely gets his 9 games then goes back to junior. Unless he REALLY impresses and makes it impossible to send him down. Could be an interesting development.

Exciting! We don’t get many draft picks start on our team over the years.

An 18 year old in the NHL sounds unserious unless he's an actual phenom

Valid criticism if you haven't seen any of his play in the pre-season. It's been pretty unanimous that this kid has NHL level skating and a 2-way game mature beyond his years. The one thing he lacks is physical size which will obviously take time for him to mature.

Maybe not as big a discount as this contract though. Him on a discount, Leon, Bouch and a good goalie could basically makes them perennial contenders till he hits 35 or so.

much easier said than done though. they're going to have to give up some kind of assets to get a goalie. this new contract just makes it a bit easier to trade for a higher quality guy. plus, you know, nurse is still on the team |

I wonder if this deal has an unspoken 'consult' or veto from McDavid. I mean hopefully, Coilers won't use that cap in stupid frivolous ways.

giving the team around 800k to play with
they need to trade for a goalie now
I see that Hyman is on LTIR... i wonder if this is why it took a bit to get these deals done
