Demko's not tanking for sure. He's fighting for his career.
Might be his last contract if he doesn't put up good numbers while showcasing he can play longer than a stretch of 10 games.

Don’t worry he’s just doing his usual “what if I stayed heathy for an entire season + playoffs, I could have won the vezina and a cup all by myself… what if… what… if….” torture to us fans.

So far ... trade is a win win for both teams.

Hearing more reports about Hughes, notably how he pretty much dipped out without saying goodbye to the whole team once they landed in New Jersey, to go hang with his brothers.
Overall it's starting to sound like as an amazing player he was, he was also a terrible captain, and that narrative is starting to come out.
I never thought he was a good choice as a captain, his bloody face used to piss me off all the time looking all solemn and sad all the time, it got old. He came off like a bratty kid.
Hopefully with his departure the vibes will change and the overall chemistry in the team will improve.
We'll see.

We'll see. | Hughes didn't show love to his former teammates by at least saying goodbye to the guys on the team bus. That act itself shows you that he cared more about him and his two brothers than his Canucks "brothers."
Sad. [Michael Russo] says Hughes found out the trade was done when the Canucks landed in Newark: “He got in a car and went to his brothers. Brock Boeser said when they got the notifications on the bus, and Quinn wasn't even there, that it just became silent on the bus, everybody just couldn't believe it” https://open.spotify.com/episode/3Os6Yi33p3phVWl5MI3jAQ
I have been a Canucks fan ever since my Dad took me to my first Canucks game at the Coliseum way back in 1983. still remember the Canucks win. A 4-2 win against Winnipeg.
The Canucks organization has had some good team captains during the course of its history.
Guys who played with heart and lead the team by example.
-Stan Smyl.
-Trevor Linden.
-Markus Naslund. Remember the time that Nazzy called out the team for losing a critical game that season? In 2003, then-Vancouver Canucks captain Markus Naslund famously told fans at Rogers Arena "we choked" after the team lost a critical regular-season game to the Los Angeles Kings, which cost them the Northwest Division title and several individual player awards.
-Luongo
-Henrik Sedin.
Where do you put Hughes in terms of his leadership ability as a Canucks captain?
I would definitely not put Hughes as one of the worst Canucks captains. -not by a longshot.
Lays chips eating Mark Messier has the honour of being the worst ever Canucks captain. Messier was horrible! -siding with Mike Keenan and dividing a team. This piece of shit was overpaid, and underperforming as a Canuck.
Messier had a big hand in forcing Linden to give up the captaincy and getting him traded from the Canucks.

Hughes is a great player, but never came off as a guy who would be a voice in the locker room the way you'd expect a captain to be. Kinda comes off as in introvert like Petey.

We'll see. | Same same, he never came off as a good Captain but I just tolerated it because of the choices at the time it sounded like it had to come from the then core, well Miller is gone, Petey no thanks, it can't be Demko, Brock looked like her would be gone so Huggie Beat by default seemed like the best option and I had no opinion at the time. But seeing him in interviews really bugged me and he was the Captain while the whole Petey and Miller thing was going on, how much could/should he have done I don't know. If somebody else was Captain during the feud would the result have been different I can't say.

After digesting the trade for a few days now, I definitely feel different about the trade. Initially I was just mad at both the player and the organization. I suppose it's still true but for me the main take away is that he didn't want to be here anymore. Yes, management is guilty of failing to put together a winning team around him but he straight up bailed on the team, as captain no less.
Players like the Sedins stuck with the team through all the highs and lows. Key point here being that they stuck it out despite half the city calling for their heads when they were in their early 20's and still developing. It's easy to stick around when the team is winning, like they did in 2010-2011. We all know how 2012 ended and the years after that, were dreadful. But these guys stayed with the team knowing the impact they had on the team's culture despite the losing and the absolute crumbling of the team around them.
So, for the most recent captain to just leave like this after a short stint leaves a sour taste in my mouth. I'm sure many others feel the same. I've lost all respect for him regardless of his talent. Basically, I'm glad he's gone and I hope the new guys all turn out great for us. Teams who have just lost the best player on their roster generally don't win immediately afterwards and much less with a shutout win and no consecutive wins since October lol. I think we're still well positioned to finish 31st or 32nd so I'm not too concerned about the wins.
Anyways, fuck him. Let's move on and get this rebuild going.

100% regardless how I feel it's in the past now. I just hope they don't get cold feet from this rebuild if they start seeing empty seats for the next while. Either try to do it right or don't at all. Don't rush it!

That's the biggest concern for me right now too. If they look at what's left of our core plus the new kids and think we're closer than we really are, they'll sell our future AGAIN and ruin a proper rebuild. That should guarantee they all get fired if it happens.

Its why they want guys in their 20s. instead of draft picks.
Not to mention you got Demko, Garland, Boeser, Hronek, EP40, Debrusk, MP with boat anchors. Its another retool on the fly with Hughes gone.
The wild GM Bill said Hughes is a hockey guy. He watches a lot of hockey and know whats going on. He bail on this "core" because mostly he thinks Canucks and these guys don't have what it takes to win the cup. Why else has he seen like 2 playoffs during his time here.

I hope they can look at the Rangers as a recent example of how not to do a rebuild. They got the 2nd and 1st overall pick, got Kakko and Lafreniere thought to themselves yea we're done and got impatient. Sure sure they did go to a couple Eastern conference finals which on paper looks like they did a fantastic job at their rebuild but that's far from the truth.

I think the "how they found out" thing is blown out of proportion and taking a life of its own.
Players are allowed to spend their day/time elsewhere even when on the road. He would've already had plans to stay and spend time with his brothers. It really isn't wild (ha!) that he took a car to go to his brothers' place instead of hopping on a bus with the team to go to the hotel.
Brock saying "he got in a car and went to his brothers" is just Brock recounting that that's what happened when they landed, not that Hughes found out he was traded and decided to hop in a car to leave without telling anyone. He even says they found out on the bus, which would've been after they already went separate ways.
Yea, the whole situation sucks, but comon... no need to make mountains out of molehills. They even had goodbye dinners.
Anyway, time to move on.

Yah, let's not do the bad fanbase thing and shit on a once in a lifetime generational player. He was phenomenal on the ice, so what if he was a bit of an introvert and not the 'stereotypical' captain. I believe Henrik was also that kind of personality, quiet leadership, didn't say much type. There is a human side to all of this. If one of you/us found out that company has relocated you to another city and you have to drop everything and report there in 2 days, let us all know what that's like.

According to the province article. Hughes had dinner with Boeser. Garland, Myers and Hronek. I think most would have guess that for sure. No Swedes. Lol. Also Hughes didnt mention or thank Allvin. But he thanks Aqua, and JR.
I am with Don Taylor. We need more canadian guys on this team. Lol.
But let's say Canucks draft top 3. Forget McKenna. They going for Stenberg. Makes sense. Team Sweden. Lol.

I know plenty of us in this market complain about the lack of North American players (which has been true) but the silver lining at this time is that the majority of our prospects are actually Canadian. I can't remember where I saw the stat recently... maybe CanucksArmy

Obviously the Sedins are a reason, but apparently the Canucks are quite popular in Sweden.
I've always wondered if that's the primary reason we sign so many of them. Most American players don't want to play in Canada, period, and if they do an Eastern market is preferred due to travel, etc.
Given those difficulties we have attracting those marque American players, I've always wondered if we went Swede because it's easier to attract/keep them given the European/Canada similarities (more so than the US), but also the fact that our climate/topography is so damn similar as well.

I’d say the Canucks have had and do have more prominent USA players than a lot of teams? Miller, Demko, Boeser, Hughes and Garland are all American
Throw Myers. Sasson, Buium, O’Connor, Sherwood and Forbort in there too currently… that’s quite a lot of USA representation!
People make all this noise about Swedes but we have 8 roster players from Sweden and 8 from USA so I’m not sure what they’re crying about. Maybe they should question the tenacity and heart of the USA players too lol
