Went there with my mom for lunch. She ordered the #1 whereas I went with the #3. I did not try any of hers so I cannot speak for it but the #3 was good. I did not ask for it to be extra spicy but I'll be sure to do it next time. The broth was good but the noodles and meat were excellent. It was not as spicy as I thought it would be but at least I'll know for next time. It was nevertheless delicious.

Service was good. Tea came right away and the meal did not take too long either.

The restaurant itself was nicely renovated but will need to get some A/C for the summer as it got quite hot in there once I started eating. I sweated not because of how spicy it was but the heat from the soup and the restaurant. It didn't get uncomfortable but I would think that A/C or some good ventilation would go a long way.

Mom said the waitress and cashier were pretty. hahaha now I think my mom is somehow on RS too.

Overall, I'd give it a 8.5-9/10.

Just got home from Hoi An.

Service was excellent and I even got to meet FlyNvBaller! :D

Tea was very fragrant and restaurant was extremely clean. It was actually weird. :p

Pork & Shrimp Spring Rolls
This was by far, the most unique spring roll I've had. It's as simple as it gets yet quite delicious. It's basically the spring roll wrap with shrimp and pork. Nothing else. You get the best of both worlds - full flavour of the shrimp and pork. Can't go wrong with this. I don't recommend using the sauce simply because it takes away from the awesomeness. :D

Pho Dac Biet (small)
Broth was amazing. I'm not sure I even know how to describe it. A very lean, clear beef broth where you could taste the different elements of beef used. This needs no sauces of any kind. Just don't toy with it. It was amazing.

I normally do not give very good reviews nor ratings as I am very particular about my food (especially when it comes to pho) but this is as honest as it gets. The menu is small - I quite like this. Why? Because they keep it simple and stick to the basics (perhaps to maintain consistency.) I don't know and I don't care (well, sort of) but try this place out. Seriously.

Cleanliness - 10/10
Service - 10/10
Food - 10/10

Will definitely have to return. :)

^ People can vouch for decent pho places in Surrey. I think a few mentioned Pho Vinh in Guildford and another where New Town is in Central.

I went to Pho Vinh a couple months ago, and I hadn't had pho in 3 years. It was pretty good compared to the Pho Hoa shit I had before.

Blogs and the like can only be relied upon to a certain point unless there is some kind of credibility behind the person/blog reviewing the food and restaurant, be it culinary studies and/or work experience in the industry etc. but I personally believe having an understanding of the cultural influences and methods of preparation behind ethnic foods is extremely important. Sadly, taste is subjective and it's extremely hard to fault somebody for not liking certain aspects of foods. This is what I do and do not like about food blogs.

I have to admit, I have been very privileged and at the same time extremely spoiled to have grown up trying different styles of foods. My aunts and uncles grew up and lived in Vietnam so a lot of the times, I was lucky to experience some very delicious home made Vietnamese food (with a bit of a Chinese flair to it.) Having said that, I had to go to a lot of different Vietnamese restaurants in Vancouver, San Fran, Los Angeles, Paris and even Germany to experience how subjective different foods can taste, especially when it comes down to pho. :D

Don't take the negative reviews to heart. And like I said in my previous reviews - I absolutely love the food at your restaurant. Everything about it from the food, the cleanliness, and the service is excellent. I definitely respect that fact that this is a family run restaurant and you folks take pride in what you do and work extremely hard maintaining high standards of quality. You folks deserve a pat on the back and jerks like me almost never give 10/10 reviews. :D

Having said that - I saw the review/link posted by K-dub. That in itself is an example of a blog which displays ignorance and lack of open mindedness. I don't take such blogs seriously.

My first time going there and I'll definitely go again. I ordered #4 (Bun Bo Tai) large. Broth and beef was really tasty! Noodles were a tad bit overcooked imo. I like my noodles a little chewy hahaha. No biggie though. Overall, good food and good service.

Went by there for lunch today (and last night for dinner....yeah, didn't work out too good, haha).

Had to wait a few minutes for a table, which I guess is to be expected since the seating is pretty limited and you RS guys keep hoggin' up all the spots. But that's really good since it means you're doing well and by the quality of the food, restaurant and service, I can see why!!!

I'm pretty sure there were some RS guys beside me too but I was busy on the phone and my GF and I were in a rush.

Went by there for lunch today (and last night for dinner....yeah, didn't work out too good, haha).

Had to wait a few minutes for a table, which I guess is to be expected since the seating is pretty limited and you RS guys keep hoggin' up all the spots. But that's really good since it means you're doing well and by the quality of the food, restaurant and service, I can see why!!!

I'm pretty sure there were some RS guys beside me too but I was busy on the phone and my GF and I were in a rush.

Anyways, I checked out the place today and similar thoughts as everyone else.

I had number 3 and the broth blew me away. It was solidly good.
My only criticism is the noodles could have been more Al Dente. Those Shrimp springrolls..damn! Good idea man, I wish I had thought of those lol.

And I'm pleased that I can actually speak English with the server, haha.

Anyways, thumbs up on the place Flynv.

So I just got back from a new place in Coquitlam called Pho Sen. Just opened at the beginning of June, in the plaza across the street from Henderson on Lincoln Ave.

Nice, new, clean and modern, pleasant atmosphere.

GF and I ordered:

-fried rolls with ground pork $2.50ea.
---larger than the norm, fresh veggies inside but the wrapper was a bit oily (not drained thoroughly?) w/ a side of sweet chilli sauce (would've preferred something more savoury and not sweet).

-small beef and tripe pho $6.75
---larger than most places, very clean, fresh tasting broth, medium colour, noodles done well, fresh ingredients

-beef w/ vegetables in spicy coconut curry w/ a side of rice $8.50
---meat was very tender and the veggies were very fresh (bok choy, mushrooms, red peppers, green beans and bamboo shoots), sauce was awesome

-avocado milk shake $4.00
---again, very fresh, not too sweet

I give it a very solid 8/10, for the area it's the best pho place, hands down. My GF and I would usually drive to New West or Vancouver before we found this place. The other good thing is that it's open late (10pm weekdays, midnight Fri./Sat.).

Tried Hoi An in the weekends as well. Have to admit it was pretty good. Had the Bun Bo Hue and loved the soup since it wasn't overly fatty/oily, ingredients were fresh too.

I tried Pho Sen in Coquitlam a few days ago.. The portions are big, the avocado smoothie is pretty good and best of all.. It is CLEAN! Not sticky and gross like most pho places (then again it is a pretty new place). I would say it is better in terms of cleanliness, price and size than even Pho Vinh.

The take out menu only list large items.

godwin, next time you're there, give the Sauteed beef w/ Coconut Curry Sauce (#50) a try. It's like a stew w/ rice on the side. The veggies are very fresh and the beef is really tender. Also, give the deep fried bananas w/ honey a try. They're bite sized pieces and the honey's a nice touch. I suggested they offer it w/ icecream and they all agreed but I haven't been back yet to see if they offer it yet.

To each their own. I prefer to have the soup by itself, since the flavour of the broth is one of the main components of pho. If I add a bunch of hoison and siraccha to it, they all taste the same.

^ x2. I just mix the sauce in a sauce dish and dip the meat. What makes the pho different from place to place is the soup, then the portions, other then that it's noodle with sliced beef or chicken lol.

My go to pho place is 33rd and main, Bon cafe.

Like I said I used to have it plain and I totally understand why it should be eaten as is, but I think it goes well with the soup. Kinda like soy sauce enhancing the flavour of certain fish (sushi), but its not for everyone.

I agree, my wife is Viet and she always put it in mine. She said it enhances the flavour of the broth and that's how it's eaten traditionally.

I hate hoisin sauce, its only for Peking duck and that's it haha.

For the longest time I avoided adding the lime and the herb leaf. I thought it was weird putting an uncooked plant branch in my soup.

for Richmond, Pho Tai Son has pretty solid BBH.

^ Just from sheer ingredients I would say Xu Hue is authentic.

Been to that place in the last month or two, and it takes an acquired native Asian palette for those dishes.

On the other hand, I have a very western approach to food. Add tons of sauces till until it's a punch to the face with flavour. It's the same story with North American pasta and pasta sauce. In Italy, pasta sauce is supposed to be like a condiment, like ketchup. But in NA, it's lathered on like fish sauce and com ga.

By tons of sauce, I would say, till the broth is grizzly bear brown. :)

I've heard Mai's in Langley is supposed to be really good. Have yet to try it. It could be the same story with Pho Stanley in Delta, pho place in a white neighbourhood is bound to get good rating from the exoticness factor.
