Since there was a 'Best Taiwanese Noodle House' I thought we would have a best pho restaurant too.

Hoang?? on Main and 18th..

Pho isn't that great, but it's the best viet food ever, Phnom Penh, chinatown

I don't think Phnom Penh ever really served real "pho" so to say. Ulic and I were really desperate one time and decided to hit up that joint. Boy, we were ever disappointed!

Back on topic however, I personally like Pho Le Do on East Hastings just off Nanaimo and Le Petit Saigon on East Hastings just off Slocan, to be the best pho restaurants in East Vancouver. I haven't explored anywhere else outside of Vancouver and even if I have, never found any to be as good as the two I've mentioned. Pho Tai Son is okay. I used to like it but it came off my list not long ago.

Shiet, Phnom Penh doesn't really serve pho, but fuck their food is good.

Le Petit Saigon just recently got sold off to some new owners and now it sucks donkey balls. (You're talking about the one that is close to PNE, right?) If it was still the old owners, omg, they place was the shit for your beef noodle cravings. Good quality soup + meats. Since my dad knows the owners, they'd always hook it up in the bun bo hue with extra tendons and pigs feet.

I haven't really been anywhere else that's been good that I would recommend 100%.

I noticed they renovated and the new owners don't take as much pride in their food and they don't have quite the personal encounter with regular customers as with the previous owners. Although the quality in food has degraded slightly, it's still one of my favourites. But yeah, like you mentioned, the quality of their broth and meats were top-notch in my opinion. :)

Personally, I find that the following are outstanding:

Pho Van on Fraser/14th; very consistent flavor with well marbled meat.

Kim Phung on Victoria/41st; slow service as very small restaurant but very consistent broth and noodles

Bao Chao on E Hastings near PNE; the spring rolls are amazingly consistent.

Pho Tam in Surrey near King George station; possibly the best and most pure broth I've ever had.

Pho Viet on Ackroyd behind Nando's chicken; my high school buddies and I went here everyday in High School, still very good meat.

Pho Lan across from Richmond City Hall on No 3/Granville, noodles have a strange texture, may not be to everyone's liking.

I feel I should mention however, that San Francisco's Pho kills Vancouver's Pho.
I thought I knew everything about Pho until my friends in SF asked me if I wanted to go for Northern or Southern Pho and I had no idea what they were talking about. True story.

Pho Lan in Richmond, by far.

Phnom Phen is the shit. They have the best fried chicken wings and...uh...beef carpacio? I've never had soup noodles their but their special dry noodles are awesome.

I think I may have spelt it wrong which is why you're getting bad results. I think it's spelt "Le Petite Saigon." I may be wrong. It's on East Hastings just west of Renfrew between Kaslo and Slocan. You'll see it just west of the Burger King on the same block as the Starbucks.

I haven't been to Kim Phung in a long time but their pho is good. Thanks for reminding me. I forgot about that place. As for Bao Chau, I personally don't think it's that good. Compared to Le Petite Saigon, I always have to chug down endless glasses of water and their spring rolls aren't even that great to be really honest. Pho Van - a Vancouver institution. It's too bad Mr. Van sold the one in Chinatown. I grew up in Chinatown so my parents would take me to Pho Van every now and then. The only one he has left is the one on Fraser.

achiam: Damn, that looks really good! :) You mentioned that was southern style pho. What was different about it? Judging by the picture, I was under the impression that any typical place in Vancouver served southern pho which is your first picture. I was told that Kim Phung served so-called southern style where the broth is a little heavier on the spices and is darker in complexion but judging by your photos, it looks like it's the opposite? When I was in Paris, I had pho in Saint Lazare and the family that ran the joint was from southern Vietnam and that's what it looked like (your picture of northern pho.)

I guess it's time to go out and to find out for myself. :)

Seems like me and you have quite similar tastes. My mom used to take us to Pho Van all the fuckin' time cuz it was kick ass. We'd order che ba mao and other stuff. I'm not a big fan of Bao Chau either, the time I had it it was nothing special and super loaded with MSG. I absolutely miss the old Le Petite Saigon, I loved that place dearly.

I didn't know there was still a Pho Van around. Gotta check out that place.

I'll ask my parents about the Southern vs Northen Pho...since my dad is from the north and my mom from the south and see what I can get out of them.

According to this site on pho (http://www.phofever.com/facts.php) I quote, "Northern style pho tends to be simpler and is made with less ingredients. There are fewer cuts of meat and small slices of ginger are laid on top of the soup. The pho is served without bean sprouts or herbs. Instead, it is accompanied by green chilies and lime only. Southern style pho is a complex dish made from a dozen ingredients. Bean sprouts, fresh basil and saw herb are typically served with each bowl. As with the Northern style pho, green chilies and lime are used as condiments."

So I guess there really are no places that serve real Northern style pho? My closest guess would have been Au Petit Cafe and maybe Kim Phung.

I was told that Northern Pho holds greater influence from Chinese cuisine, and as a result the noodles are somewhat thicker, almost like chinese "hoh fun" noodles. The broth is also simpler as it gives a distinct, clear flavor whereas Vancouver-type Southern pho broth is quite complex, having been prepared with spices and star anise etc. The other difference is that they give lots of chopped onions on top, and have a wider emphasis on different types of meat balls.

I haven't gone to Paris yet, but will go in February. Surprisingly, the Vietnamese area in Berlin had quite good pho as well, but nothing compared to San Francisco.

So how exactly to do judge wether a certain Pho location is better than another?

ive been to a couple in Richmond and they all taste the same to me. Now your talking to a Chinese person right now with pretty open taste to any type of food.

But Pho is basically Hot Soup and prepped up raw stuff put into the soup.

im not belittle vietnamese food but i want to know how to judge how it is good compared to others.

Hmm... I suppose it just tastes different and will have a taste of "quality" if its good. NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING beats home made pho that's been boiling for most of the day with all the proper ingredients. Once you have a taste of that shit...nothing is every the same afterwards. My aunt made some one time...holy shit. That's all I can say. I think I ate like 5 big bowls of pho. Sadly, I haven't visited her every since.

Not pho, but Phnom Pehn is easily my favourite Vietnamese/Cambodian place. I've been going there for ... gosh... more years than I'm willing to admit to ;)

Pho Van as mentioned is a good place. When I'm there though, I typically order the dry rice vermicelli with pork, spring rolls and veggies. I swear, it's an infinite bowl of food. Hits the spot when I don't want to be weighed down by salty broth.

Nobody has mentioned Buu Dien near Rupert and First, across the street from Blockbuster Video. Good subs - their grilled pork sub is, IMO, definitely worth killing for. About 5 years ago, Buu Dien had a killer sandwich shop at a stripmall on Fraser and 18th or so. Before it burned down, it rocked something fierce to the tune of 4 or 5 subs for $10! The subs at the Rupert location are still good but no longer as cheap.

I don't think that place is very good. The subs are not that good at all. Food is mediocre. I am a bit harsh though. I would only recommend places that I have 100% faith in that the person would like. I was recommeded to go to this place based on their subs and their food, but when I went there everything sucked, including the service.

I had pho in Dresden, Germany. It was tasty but they used the same noodles found in pad thai so unfortunately, the noodles got soggy and the beef used was cheap sirloin. I had pho in Calgary - it comes close to Vancouver but it's way too clean to be good. :)

Pho in Surrey? As good as you make it seem, I would not go anywhere over the Patullo or Port Mann Bridge for pho. :lol

Here in Toronto, on the other hand, a few minutes away from my hotel at Spadina and Dundas is Pho 88 which is pretty good. Their "house special" is nothing like what we get in Vancouver. I had pho everyday for about 5 days in paris 2 weeks ago. I lived near the Chinatown (which is really more cambodian/laos/burma influence). The pho broth i had there was very clear - kinda like Pho Tam in surrey where you taste only one clear flavor instead of a mumbo jumbo of spice flavors.
I had heard and read from many that Paris pho is the best in the world as the viet/burma/cambodia ppl fled here during the civil wars and learned to cook Pho in French ways but I could not appreciate anything noticeably French about the Pho. Here is a picture though:

Not sure what's the big deal with Pho Tam..

It is next to Surrey skytrain in a real sketchy neighbourhood.. the exterior strip mall is DTES filthy.

The Pho is more expensive compared with chains like Thai Son... not by much but say 1 buck in a 6 bucks meal is quite a bit.

The thing that really turns me off.. the chef/ cooks help other helpers to go outside and dump the garbage and walk back in and cook again as if nothing have happened!?

Yuck!

Nooch

New place in richmond, very very clean. Very different feel. Kinda like a Ramen stand.

Foods different, not the usual MSG ridden place.

http://www.dinehere.ca/restaurant.asp?r=3564

I suggest you guys try it out. The soup base is more basily tasting, and minimal to no msg.
