-Stay in the slot and in between the passing lane to take away the one timer
-Don't dive or use the L1 (LB for Xbox)

Playing with comp:
-Comps make terrible teammates, play with a full team!
-99% comp D will shoot when in offensive zone even if you're open, make yourself open for the rebound
-Seems to me the best way to score is to cycle in the zone when playing with comp

I think for us we all have to play better defensively. Some games we can outskate our opponents but when we don't, we gotta hang around the slot and take away the lanes

Try going to legend. It's freaking ridiculous. I'm shy of getting an average of A- , and levelling up through club or drop in games are getting tedious. Sometimes the drop in players on your team suck ass which doesn't help you out.

I never tap my stick. i see idiots all the time doing this the first chance they see the play turning around. It's so annoying!

not necessarily. My defenceman is a 2 way defender, and I've recently changed his attributes lowering down his checking and increasing discipline and stick checking. Discipline is at 90+ while stick checking is 90+ and defence awareness is 99.

Poke checking for the puck works wonders without getting any penalties at all! Give it at try!

I can't believe we're at NHL 12 now and they still haven't dumbed down the ability to figure skate. The puck needs to be looser when handled by players. When do u ever see anyone go full speed towards a puck in their own corner with an opposing player chasing him, grab the puck and do an immediate 180 and skate up with the puck? I hope EA steps it up next year and make it more realistic when it comes to puck control.

I've been playing a lot with Van19, Jmac, Rmac and Nassy16.. we're pretty responsible defensively but its just so frustrating to see ppl skate by you. And when you think you have all the lanes covered, they somehow throw Sedin like saucers for a one-timer (over and over again during the game)

Holding LT (L2) first is to prevent your player from accidentally bodycheck instead.

We were really good last night. I have to admit it was one of the most fun I've had playing online in quite some time.

We did really well against the higher skilled players. Poke checking is super effective now. With a high def awareness attribute, your player can take away lots of one timers.

NHL 12 is probably the least improvement from a previous NHL title base on the next-gen series (07 and up).

07 was a big leap in controls and graphics but the game was terrible. 08 was a HUGE improvement and blew us all away and every year after that we saw steady improvements. Some minor, but necessary.

At first NHL 12 seemed pretty good. But it turns out it was just a matter of time before all the things I hated sinked in.

1) the hipcheck was overpowered. They tried patching it but it still sucks. It may not be OP but the checking animations on it r crap now.

2) the hitting physics engine is worse than last year. Anyone notice the most common way of getting hit is when the guy looks like his legs get taken out from under him despite getting hit high and from the front? It makes no sense.

3) Glitches. Damn, at first I thought gone were the days where the AI d-men get undressed so damn easily but nope, those pros have found other ways to walk around with super ease.

And ofcourse dem glitch goals.

4)Unrealistic puck-control and figure skating. You can go full speed chasing a puck in the corner, grab the puck and do an immediate 360 and go the other way without loss of speed. Like come on. It's frustrating going in for a 50/50 chase for a puck along the boards only to have him get that tiny step ahead, touch the puck, and have his player's body invert to the opposite side and skate away with it.

And figure skating with the puck. Twist and turning all over the place, holding down B and spinning in circles with the puck glued to you. EA claimed to have fixed such things in the past. To them it was just something minor that can be fixed with some simple tweaks when in reality it requires a full out overhaul of the engine.

I enjoyed every year's improvement off the last except this year's. I feel like they've reached the pinnacle of what their engine offers and need to do some big remodeling. Of course I know this won't happen which saddens me.


I'll still be playing the game but with frustration.


My only hope is that 2k is working on something big to get back into the NHL gaming market.

This game is certainly frustrating when the discrepancy between skills put the game into un-playable mode. It becomes too easy for the elites and too discouraging for the amateurs.

The RS team is full of hard working players committed to D. But when you have a figure skater with full 99 speed and 99 wrist accuracy/power, and does the same wrister shot that goes in on every goalie, its highly discouraging. There is no chance to beat these guys.

AND, the dive/goalie glitch. I hate it when ppl use it but I've become accustomed to using it against the elite teams because its just so hard to score a goal..

I dunno.. I have a love & hate relationship with this game. I play because I grew up playing this series. Perhaps it may be time to move on next yr

Edit: if we're playing elite teams.. we should play like the Flyers.. just hold back until they forecheck!

^yup. it comes down to the best defence to never try to go after a player when they are in the corner. they'll just circle around you. only thing u can do is have everyone create a box around the net area and never commit to the players until they come in for a shot.

And I would love to move on next year but there's no other hockey game to move on to.

Getting a good game going online is still awesome though... played this dude "sim" style so we played real style hockey...(dump the puck when on the pk... no 1 timer all the time, etc..),. I scored and ended up winning 1-0 as I played predators style hockey after lol...

No because they never skip their own goals but skip yours. If they wanted to "analyze" what they did wrong then they wouldn't skip your goals.

Well, we beat a completely noob team ... although it really wasn't anything to be proud of.

We had 1 good game against an evenly skilled opponent, but unfortunately, 2 of our 4 players got disconnected and my brother is a complete noob. Lost in OT :(

All the other games resulted in a raping. I really wish EA had a better matchmaking system. I'd rather wait 5 minutes and play a similarly skilled team than spend 25 minutes getting my ass handed to me by Elite Playoff Champs. A Superstar 3 + 2 x Amateur 1s should not be getting matched against 5 x Legend 3s.

The OT loss was rough. We outshot this team 37-12, had the puck in their end almost the entire time, and they score 3 completely garbage goals while their AI goaltender was stopping cross-creasers and breakaways all game ...

I hate playing with those types of people because they're selfish and all about themselves. Hockey is a team game and I like to involve all the players on the ice. You'll see me pass back to the point alot if the dman is open, even if it's a cpu controlled dman because we can rush the net and get deflection goals. I could care less if I score or get assists, I just want to win. If I can do something other than scoring or getting points like block shots, taking the puck away from the offensive player or neutralize the offensive attack, I'm happy with that. I'm all about the teamwork. If I had anything to say to anyone. I would openly say it like I did earlier when I was addressing you :D. I would expect the same treatment if you had anything to say to me as well. We're all here to have fun and win games. If there's anything that you feel that I could do better to help out the team, please let me know :awwyeah:

Good games tonight. I've never played with a full roster before haha, that was quite the experience. We played some pretty tough teams. Even though we lost, I had tons of fun.

I'm not too worried about it since we are slowly but surely improving and we're having fun in most games.

We need to get mics and have practices :P

Yeah but we can't control that especially when the players are all boosted. I didn't even know about boosting until yesterday. I was like these guys are way faster, can easily hit us and overall are killing our players. I managed to get a goal so it wasn't a shutout :pokerface:

Boosting gives your player extra abilities like speed, acceleration, checking, shot power etc... Boosts can be purchased using $ but if you play enough games, some of the boosts unlock as well so you can get them either way. There's boosts like +5 speed, that's why some players skate way faster than others. Right now all my boosts are only +1 with the exception of +3 for stick checking.
I don't believe in paying $ to boost, I'll earn them by playing games.

Best way to unlock the boosts is to just keep playing online OTP or Club games.

Don't bother with the single player ways of unlocking.

This way you actually playing for fun online while unlocking your attribute cards AND boosts. Before you know it you'll have unlocked a ton of stuff.

Just finished up a game with skead. 3 goals 3 assists baby! We won but our goalie let in some pretty weak goals.

Here's a tip for defencemens:

When playing the front of the net and trying to take away that cross-crease pass, don't be using the poke-check nor block shot buttons. Instead, just stand there in front of your opponent and hold LT(L1) so that you player is always facing the puck. When the pass is made, your player should intercept it automatically and have immediate possession of the puck.

It's probably the highest % play to make.

Having good stats doesn't hurt either. 99 defensive awareness is a must have for dmen!
