just played a quick game. there's not many changes made. Hits are a lot harder and more realistic, its harder to flatten the other players but I just dumped Marchand into the bench :). Visuals are identical, not much new. Same boring ass commentary :speechless: Yes, you can fit and interact with goalies but you'll get bored of it in a couple games. Same shitty ass music too. Not sure if its worth the $69.99 but I'll still get it regardless

The game speed is slower which I like.

Hitting is better, skating is better, and I enjoy the added shooting animations to the game.


The puck is loose when winding up for a slapshot.

Pokechecking hasn't changed at all.

The ability to have scrubs in front of the net is nice but still kinda hard to do as a d-man.

Overall, it feels more realistic.

I notice that it's harder to get the puck through traffic now which is nice. And screens are actually effective this time around.


But what makes or breaks the game is whether there is more or less glitches in the game.

I have yet to try that stupid deke around the AI dman that works everytime in NHL 11 so I'm not sure if that's in it.

I read that the stupid short-side deke and everyone does online is still in it. (since NHL 10 for Christ's sake)

And the weird looking, 180 degree hook shot when going across the net still works. I thought that this would be removed since they added more shooting animations.


I only play EASHL so glitching online is very important. I usually play center on my team but had to drop to defence because so many ppl exploit the crappy AI.

NHL 07 is when they started completely fresh and had the new "next-gen" series of NHL. But it is come a looooooooooooong way since then.

Albeit the changes every year since NHL 08/09 hasn't felt much different, but they are small very necessary updates. NHL 11 is much better than NHL 10 if you play it a lot especially online.

First thing I noticed - is why the Canucks Goaltending is considered 97, while Boston is only 91... I guess they take into account our Backup, but either way, it's insane.

Either way, it felt great to destroy some of the boston players.

if your on a break away and run at the goalie you will just go to the side like older nhl games.

I feel sorry for anyone paying $60 for this game. This is the most half-assed NHL game yet. The legends team isn't even interesting to play as at all. All they did was put whatever legends they could get then threw in players with the highest ratings to fill in the rest of the slots. Luongo backing up Patrick Roy = lulz. NBA 2k does it a million times better by putting in the ACTUAL classic teams.

I love how after a big hit or nice deke the commentators say "we'll all be watching that on the NHL network this week" then in the replay cutscene seconds later it'll just show some random hit. The hitting physics are screwed up NHL 12 EASHL Huge Hit - YouTubeNHL 12: Bouchard with a Huge Open Ice Hit on Vermette - YouTube Presentation is still complete garbage. Same lines. Same cutscenes you'll never want to watch. Same crappy replays that don't even show the play developing.

The 2k hockey series was way better than the EA series until NHL 08. Although EA made the jump to "next-gen" in 07, it wasn't until 08 that the game felt much more complete. I tried 07 and it felt like it was a game in it's alpha stages of development and it's great graphics was not enough to lure me away from 2k.

NHL 08 was such a big impact that they even had a little segment on the 2k vs EA hockey series on Sportsnet.

Before NHL 08, NHL 2004 was the only other good EA NHL game (not including those old school 2D sprites ones).

NHL12 yes, albeit not a HUGE upgrade, but I'm playing the early release and I can already tell u that the new AI engine is a huge improvement over the stale plays. The skating is smoother, and the hitting a bit more realistic, no longer can St.Louis dish out huge hits. The battling in front of the net is a neat addition adding to the overall realism to the sport of hockey. You should think of these sports games as an added fun to the actual sport. Modes like the winterclassic only add to the experience of the game.

For one, when HockeyUltimateTeam was thrown into NHL11, I was happy. I can't wait to give the NHL12 HUT a go. Be A GM is better this time around. I have yet to try this mode.

Starting this week, 14-year-old Lexi Peters will be stick handling past men twice her size as she plays in the starting lineup for the Buffalo Sabres. Or the Vancouver Canucks. Or any NHL team the 90-pound left-winger chooses.

Because when video game publisher Electronic Arts releases the latest edition of its popular NHL series on Tuesday, Lexi will be the first female in its virtual hockey roster.

Hockey is attracting more female players, but when young skaters like Lexi turned to the leading NHL video game, the custom player characters they could build in the game came with many different looks – so long as they were male.

“I asked my dad, ‘Why aren’t there girls in the NHL video game?’ And he said, ‘I don’t know, write a letter.’ So, I did,” Lexi told the Globe and Mail from her home in Buffalo, N.Y.

She sent a typewritten letter to the executives of one the largest video game makers in the world, asking them to add women players.

She wrote: “It is unfair to women and girl hockey players around the world, many of them who play and enjoy your game. I have created a character of myself, except I have to be represented by a male and that’s not fun.”

For those who have never tried the game, players can choose everything from their team and players to who controls the puck. They can also create characters of their own, picking hair and eye colours and other details. Those characters were all men.

“My younger brother got to create a character that looked just like him. I had never been able to experience that,” says Lexi.

The 4 foot 11 teen has played hockey for four years. She and a teammate spent hours creating a whole custom hockey team, modeling the players after their own all-girls team, the Purple Eagles. The best they could do was give the characters long “hockey” hair.

“We looked like men,” she says.

The first response she got back from Electronic Arts was disappointing. But she figured at least she’d tried.

“I heard back a few weeks later and they told me it couldn’t happen because it has to go through the NHL.”

What she didn’t know was that the president of EA Sports had forwarded her letter to David Littman, the lead producer of the company’s NHL game. His reaction was different.

“Lexi’s letter was a wake-up call,” Mr. Littman told the Globe and Mail. “Here’s a growing audience playing our NHL game and we hadn’t done anything to capture them.”

Mr. Littman then did some stick handling of his own: finding the budget to build her into the game, as well as getting permission from the NHL and EA’s legal department.

Then EA Sports gave Lexi the news. Not only were they adding a female character option, but they wanted Lexi to play the part of the “default” female player that gamers would then be able to customize.

“I was so excited,” says Lexi. “My dad called my grandpa immediately, who called my Uncle Chris, like a chain reaction.”

Users can tailor the female character by changing hair, eye colour and the name on the jersey if they want, just as with male players.

It is a sensible business move in a competitive video-game market that’s worth an estimated $20-billion worldwide. But it also marks the progress of female hockey players.

“It’s a big change and it’s exciting to see, because so many girls pay hockey now,” said Manon Rhéaume, the only woman to ever play in the real-world NHL.

Ms. Rhéaume was a goalie for the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 1992-93 season. She now runs a foundation that offers scholarships to young women in sports and promotes girls’ hockey.

“I think we’re at a place where women in hockey are more accepted. People are putting more money into girls’ hockey and the growth we’re seeing in the sport is mainly from girls, not boys.”

Hockey Canada, the national organization that oversees administration and development of the sport, has numbers that back that up. In 1990, there were about 5,000 women and girls playing the sport. Today, there are more than 100,000.

“The two gold medals in the past Olympics has been a huge factor,” says Francis Dupont, communications officer with Hockey Canada. “There’s been a lot more attention on women’s hockey media-wise in the past five to 10 years and more coaches and programs to grow the sport.”

Of course, NHL purists can still play the video game as men. But Lexi is hoping they give the women a chance. And that the boys at her school who don’t take girls’ hockey seriously change their minds.

The big question now: how will she choose who to play as? Herself, or her favourite NHL star, Alex Ovechkin?

This. In the mid 2000's, EA's NHL series got complacent and didn't bother really improving the game year to year. NHL2k however did, and for a few years put out a much superb realistic hockey sim game compared to EA.

Realizing this, EA stepped it up with its new motion-stick gameplay (or whatever they call it) and basically blew NHL2k out of the water when it was introduced in 07/08.

NBA, MLB and NFL as well, gameplay wise the 2k sports was much better than their EA counterparts for simulation fans. I don't follow it much nowadays whether NBA or MLB is rated better than EA, but for NFL they were so concerned of losing ground on their highly lucrative Madden franchise, put out the dough to buy the exclusive video game rights from the NFL. Luckily the other leagues did not follow suit even though EA did offer the same type of deal.

Ah actualyl you're right. But when you go into your EASHL club in NHL 11 and click on roster, it would show ONLY your club stats and not your drop-in stats as well.

NHL 10 had lots of glitch goals but it was fast and fun, NHL 11 fixed those glitch goals but the gameplay was slow as hell and too many cheese goals, and now with NHL 12 they've tweaked something again, making it really sluggish and not responsive at all... and most importantly, it's just not FUN anymore! It's like they're trying to make it more realistic every year but it's gotten slower and slower.

It's a friggin' game, keep it fun (even if it's slightly unrealistic)!

Some of my complaints:
- my players can't stay on their feet. the puck gets knocked loose way too easily
- the goalies in online versus mode are like Tim Thomas reincarnated, you need the perfect shot or one timer to beat them and they would make saves that NHL 11 goalies could only dream about
- the timing of passes and one-timers have changed... not sure how to explain it, but it's a little bit hard to predict the behavior of your button-pressing. HATE THIS.
- too many garbage goals... ugly hockey.
- hitting the post too many friggin' times. I counted 6, that's right, SIX time I hit the post/corssbar in TWO PERIODS. WTF?!?!

This game gets a solid 5 of out 10 for me. Don't waste your money paying full price for it, and if you have NHL 11 still - keep it and play that instead! Btw I have the PS3 version and I've heard comments on how the Xbox version is somehow better?!?!?!? How's that even possible that the same game plays differently on each console?

This is the best NHL game I have ever played.

NHL 10 was glitched like crazy it was annoying.

NHL 11 was much better but they still had a lot of glitches especially the one where you can deke around a AI defender so easily and a pro can do this 100% of the time. It was because of this glitch that I was forced to play defence on my EASHL team.

NHL 12 the AI is much much better.

If you want something more arcadey there's NHL slapshots for the Wii and that xbox 3on3 arcade download.

If you haven't noticed, all of the major EA Sports games are SIM games. Madden, NBA Live, Tiger Woods, etc. They are all made to be as realistic as possible because that is what the majority wants.
And to comment on your complains:

Your player can't stay in his feet probably cause you're trying to ballet dance with him. and the puck getting knocked off too easily?? This is hockey. The puck doesn't get glued to your blade. In the prvious games it was stuck on the player waaay too easily. Poke checking was so damn useless.

I don't have much to say about the goalies. I still get the save variation of goals in my versus games as NHL 11

You do know that you don't need to time your one-timers. All you have to do is hold LT + up on the right stick and if the puck comes to you, you automatically one time it.

If you watch hockey, most goals are ugly goals. And if you notice in previous NHL games, there are RARELY any garbage/rebound goals in the game. If anything, NHL 12 could use more garbage goals.

I think this is just a coincidence to be honest because just last night when I was playing with my friend we were talking about how we hit the post LESS than NHL 11

The more I play this game the more I like it. The slight improvements to the game really makes a big difference.

My only two major complaints regarding gameplay are:
- That stupid glitch goal where you are coming down the left side (left-handed player) and you do that backhand forehand deke on the goalie scoring short side. It's been in the game since NHL 09 or 10 and I'm very surprised they never fixed that.

- The really buffed up the hip checking and it looks ridiculous. If your player is gliding very slowly and barely glances a player that is in the hipcheck position, you go flying. I've seen replays where my player runs into the guy's head and drops like a fly.

I should note that I don't play against the AI at all - I only play against human players in online versus mode, so all that "improvements" in the AI unfortunately aren't apparent to me when I play.

The timing thing with one-timers is really strange - in NHL 11, I could hold on to pass + up and when the puck comes to the player he'll one time it, but in 12, if I press Up too early, the player with the puck will shoot instead of pass. I don't know if this is for the PS3 version only but I can't get used to this change in timing.

and no, it's not because I can't score or win games. I stopped playing NHL 11 when my record hit 400-250-30something in online versus mode... started off in 12 pretty well, 7-0-0, then boom I lost 7 in a row because of all those things I just complained about.

For those of you that play Be a Pro or other multiplayer modes, you may not notice it as much, but when you play 1-on-1 against someone you will definitely notice those things I mentioned.

You are too use to playing NHL 11. It feels different because it's a different game. If it were the same, you would be complaining about how you are paying for the same recycled garbage.

As per players feeling sluggish, again, you are comparing 12 to 11. Personally I thought the same when I DL the demo, and also during the first few games. However, once you take the game for what it is (NHL 12) and have a few games, you will get adjusted to the difference skating style. Personally, I like it better.

I also like how you can't just automatically strip the puck with a stick lift any longer, and I love how during a chase for the puck, it feels like the puck is more neutral in this version.

Hip-checks in 11' were essentially useless.

I'm guessing in between last year and today, people kept bitching about it, and now we have an OP feature.

Hipchecking is RARELY seen in real hockey anyways so it should be kept to being seldom used like in NHL 11.

They need to redo it completely if you ask me. Hipchecking isn't just crouching down really low and pretty much stop skating. There should still be momentum as you skate into the opponent with your hip sticking out.

I'm not a big fan of the "new physics" engine. The body checking is so unrealistic, and the collision detection is a joke.

- Hitting animations look scripted with people falling the wrong way when they are hit.
- Running full speed at somebody skating straight with their head down results in them standing you up and continuing on with the puck.
- Goalies getting stuck in the net.
- Stupid hip checks
- Getting nudged from behind results in your guy suddenly losing all his speed and forward momentum
- A person in the middle of an "animation" makes them invincible until the animation is complete. For example, i had a guy "slide through" 2 forwards and 2 dmen because somebody poke checked him behind, which put him into the "tripped and stumble" animation. This is fine...except nobody could touch him or the puck in his possession until the stupid animation finished. By the time the animation finished, he had already slid through the entire team and had an easy goal.

I think we have lack of competition to blame.
EA knows this game is going to sell. It's not like gamers can jump to another series.

I can't even get my boosts and equipment slots to unlock after grinding out an entire season with my offline BAP (40 games required and I played 59 to be sure). To add insult to injury, my offline BAP is forever stuck on Amateur1 with everything stuck at 100% achieved and the next card won't unlock for me.

So now I've resorted to unlocking my equipment slots/boosts online.

I can play any skater position, but don't play goaltender. Generally best as RW or RD, but I'm still comfortable on the left side with either position. I'm pretty good defensively as a center, but I'm not great offensively as a center.

I play alot of offline season mode. Anyone on the same boat? if so, anyone notice how easy it is to play on pro mode then once you switch it to all star mode, the AI gets godlike? shitty weak skaters suddenly out skating your superstars with easy, crazy dekes/dangles and snipe shots, the computer intercepting all your passes even if it's way behind them, they magically reach back and pick off the passes with ease. Their tape to tape passing and ease of getting the puck off you even if they just bump you. I can still win on all star but not easily like the previous years NHL's. I won't dare play the CPU on superstar mode this year because of this.

Yeah, All-Star is a much bigger jump this year....I usually end up tuning the skating speeds though...there's no way some of slower 2nd liners should catch up to me when I'm 5 strides ahead of them already in full-sprint mode.

it's the same as the difference between joining a hockey team in some beer league and just joining a random, for fun hockey game set up by someone where winning or losing doesn't matter.

Just played my first few drop-in OTP games in NHL 12 ... Did pretty well. 1G, 3A as LW in 1st game, no points in 2nd game as D, and 1G, 3A in 3rd game as C.

When you hit it properly, it looks more realistic than NHL 11, but more often than not, it's nowhere close to realistic.
