I want to get RS's take on this because me and a friend have been arguing about the riots.

He was one of the thousands who stayed downtown that night to watch and take it all in. He didn't do any vandalism at all, but he straight up told me that he needed to "experience it first hand" and the only way to be aware of what is happening is to be in the heart of the action.

So he was one of those people with his cellphone running around snapping pics and taking it all in which I think is completely idiotic from my standpoint because if it was people like him, the cops could have gotten to the true rioters A LOT faster.

When he was living in Toronto he took part of the G20 standoff as well and was in the thick of things.

While I understand that many people are claiming that they were downtown to take pictures of the rioters to turn into police, when does that become a bad excuse since their first admittance is they just wanted to be a part of it all?

Does it make a person an accomplice if they are simply standing and watching while other people are injured/stabbed etc. or property is damaged, just to experience it first hand like it is a form of entertainment?

Where do you draw the line?

I definitely see where you are coming at. The truth is, it is human nature to observe things, especially things that are novel, unique, or don't happen everyday. It just isn't easy for some people to just go home when they are in the mist of action. Just like how some of us just can't stop watching the riot on the news and TV, or even investigating and being part of the debate of this riot.

In short, the people who are watching crime happen as a form of entertainment are not an accomplice to any of those actions. It can be said to be immoral, but not illegal.

Certainly, the crowd of destruction outnumbers the people who opposes to riot. How many people are brave enough to step up? And how many riot opposes would it take to stop the violence or possibly prevent it? Would it even be possible? Just for thoughts.

PS: I personally feel ashamed for the people who take pictures, record fires and criminal acts taking place, not for the sake of obtaining evidence against rioters, but for the sake of "being there" and entertainment.

tell your friend he's an idiot. if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. people who enabled the rioters were just as guilty. the rioter's focus is getting attention from the crowd and getting as many people to participate as possible. people who were defending the city and taking pictures for evidence are the only ones who i felt had a right to do what they did. i'm not saying everyone should have fought back against the rioters and potentially risk their well being/lives. what i'm saying is if you don't stick around to watch this shit, it helps.

Simply watching or taking photos or videos is borderline but I'd say they could have done better by leaving the scene. The police and fire dept did say that one major problem was one of access. They couldn't get to where they needed to be because of the sheer number of people in such a crowded area.

What's wrong is when you start cheering or posing for photos. That makes you an instigator because others will follow your lead due to mob mentality. I still do not understand what these supposedly innocent bystanders were thinking when they cheered or posed for photos in front of the riots to show their friends. "Woooo, its a party here tonight, time to start cheering even if I don't understand what I'm cheering for!" or "Look ma, I was at the riots tonight and I'm so happy to be here right in front of this burning car!". What idiots.

Exactly. While I was filming I saw one of my friends girlfriend (she was with another girl) getting harassed by these 2 brown guys. Later I found out that guy was following her and kept grabbing her ass. I stood between them telling him to stop but he kept coming at her. I can't say I didn't want to take a swing at him, but in the back of my mind I also didn't want to look like the easy to target asian kid and get jumped by these rowdy fucks who don't need to take sides and just want to be a part of hurting someone.

I believe Asia is different than North America in that they really believe in minding their own business. I've seen videos of people get hit by a car and laying on the ground with no one willing to help.

If there's random punks stealing from the multi billion dollar hudson's bay company should I put my life on the line to protect them from losing 1 day's profits? Assaulting some helpless girls I agree with but if you\re talking about the girls trying to protect the BMW, I didn't see anybody attack them. Maybe these guys didn't want to hit a girl but if a guy came out to defend them, buddy would have got the shit kicked out of him. All to protect a rich girl with insurance and a $100K car.She is slightly inconvenienced until she goes and buys a new one. The dude would be hospitalized. If he's lucky he will get a thank you card.

By the way hero, where were you when this happened? Before you take the moral high ground. Were you one of those guys standing up to the mob? Cool then. If not, weren't you watching the news? If it was family or friends being attacked, then yes you have to help. But if it was just me and one buddy and he decided to step in front of a mob, I would pull him out and beat him myself cause I've learned my lesson. At least that way only he gets beatdown and not me too.

I commend the guys who tried to stop shit but property is just money (and those people that own it have plenty of it), but lives are not replaceable. Would have been better if they tried to get the crowd in general to leave.

I'm sorry Vancouver Police Chief Jim Chui. Your plan failed and for the second time your city has an international black eye after the 7th game of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Much outrage has been expressed here on CKNW to the actions of the rioters. There is no doubt they were idiots - drunken, dangerous fools. I fully agree with the Police Chief there was a group of people bent on anarchy. But the Chief, Mayor Gregor Robertson, and Premier Christy Clark insist it was a small group. Bunk! It was anything but small. The size of the crowd outside the Canada Post building..the size of the crowd on the Granville strip...the size of the crowd looting the London Drugs, Sears or The Bay was not small.

Now, while we can quibble about the size, all of the talk about this lawless group also conveniently diverts attention from the police response. No one argues about those drunken thugs being idiots and criminals who deserve jail time. But, dealing with those drunken thugs - how to prevent a riot and how to stop a riot when it begins - I think the VPD have to take a very serious look at their own performance. From what I heard from the Police Chief Thursday morning, Jim Chui doesn't appear to be very interested in at least acknowledging that need, let alone doing it. Butt covering seems to be the plan.

First, the meet and greet strategy touted by Chui and Mayor Robertson utterly failed in preventing the riot. It failed when it was most needed - game 7.

Second, at what point do police use force to retake the streets? Chui proudly points out it took 3 hours to bring order to the streets - half the time it took in 1994. Great...ask the folks at London Drugs or Future Shop or Sears or The Bay how pleased they are with what happened. There was virtually no effort by police to stop the window smashing that led to the looting. The cops withdrew. No cordon of cops and police dogs to stop them from breaking the windows at London Drugs or Sears. No, the police withdrew.

I have no problem with the front line officers backing off to protect their safety. It was wild in front of the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. But, I think those front line men and women were let down by The Plan. The Plan the Chief says worked. The Plan the Chief says was followed.

Okay.no one was killed. 9 cops hurt. 100 arrested. 15 vehicles torched. Maybe that is a success in the big picture. It seems to me when the riot moved from torching cars to looting downtown stores - that's when a much stronger police reaction was necessary. To me, the looting crossed a line. That's when the cops had to say: "Enough is enough". Go home or be arrested.and you may get hurt if you don't go home. At some point, police needed to draw a line and say: "No more". It appears that never happened or if it did, it was long after the serious damage was done.

I have no issue with the front line cops and firefighters. I think they were poorly served by The Plan. Chief Chui says all kind of experts were consulted in creating The Plan. I can't help but think The Plan didn't work, and Wednesday night the anarchists - those troublemakers police say they know - won. They succeeded in brawling, burning and looting and giving the City of Vancouver another big black eye. Chief Chui, you say the VPD learned from the 1994 riot. I don't think you learned enough.

There's no question in my mind that the VPD was understaffed and not prepared for the large crowd. They should have had more cops and riot police on stand by and maybe called in reinforcements from the RCMP.

Kotylak had received a partial scholarship to attend the University of Calgary to study kinesiology, and hoped one day to compete in the Olympics, according to his father.

After the picture of Kotylak vandalizing a police car became one of the most viewed images in the riot's aftermath, the young athlete was repeatedly outed on Facebook and other social networking sites by people who recognized him.

The teen's father, a surgeon in B.C., told CBC News on Friday that the Grade 12 student will be "doing the right thing" by turning himself in.

He added that he wishes that his older son had been there that night to look out for his 17-year-old.

ICBC offers facial-recognition technology to Vancouver police’s riot investigation

Since 2009, the Insurance Corporation of B.C. has used facial-recognition technology to catch theft and fraud related to driver licences.

Now, the Crown corporation is offering to let Vancouver police use this technology for a very different purpose—to nab rioters who committed crimes in the wake of the Canucks’ Stanley Cup loss.

“Subject to receipt of a court order, the corporation’s facial-recognition technology will be able to support the identification of suspects,” states a news release issued today (June 17) by Premier Christy Clark’s office.

ICBC’s technology works by analyzing unchanging characteristics of faces, such as the distance between the eyes and the size and location of cheekbones.

The B.C. government also announced today that the Criminal Justice Branch has a team of Crown prosecutors ready to handle the prosecution of crimes related to the June 15 riot.

According to the release, the RCMP and Lower Mainland police forces have agreed to work on these cases with the Vancouver police in an Integrated Coordinated Investigation Team.

The provincial government has also launched a Facebook page called Heroes of British Columbia.

British Columbians are being encouraged to use the page to share “positive stories of volunteers, good Samaritans, emergency services personnel and others coming together”.

The government plans to publicly honour people who “demonstrated bravery and heroism during the chaos after the 2011 Stanley Cup final” in the weeks ahead.

Potential “heroes” can be nominated by sending an email to heroes@gov.bc.ca.

I am sending this email on behalf of a group of outraged and disappointed students who have concerns for not just the University's image, but it's student body. We believe that this behavior is not tolerable and may as well tarnish the University's reputation. We also believe this gentleman is in the Beedie School of Business and is regularly seen at Burnaby campus's fitness center. Please respond adequately and fairly in respect to other students, the City of Vancouver, and Simon Fraser University. We have also contacted the VPD, Crimestoppers and the Students' Society. There are times when certain police officers go overboard (i.e. Mehserle in Oakland) but most of the time officers are just defending themselves or the city. The VPD showed great integrity and strength that night. Their jobs are not easy and idiots like the many rioters (and thousands of on lookers) makes it that much harder.
