And for relevancy to this thread, I'm not at UBC this term. Again. :troll:

CVC has been awesome. I know a lot of people in CVC and the things you do are amazing. You meet so many cool people and do lots of fun things. Of course, as with any other Chinese clubs like CCS, CSA, DSC, Yours, CVC and whatever else, you need to be part of the exec team, AND you also need to be active in order to get positive results. Otherwise you're just wasting your time.
CVC's External Communications team do really cool things like shooting videos. See some of their past videos: Videos (http://ubccvc.com/?page_id=524)

Ubcsecure has been having issues since the start of September. At first it was simply overloaded due to too many users. That was fixed in 2 or 3 days by adding more servers. Now it is regarding their DHCP servers running out of IP addresses. That is being looked at right now.
Patience. It's hit or miss. Use ubcvisitor or even better, use 3G tether if you have a smartphone.

I'm kinda paranoid about using ubcvisitor, but watever. And rageguy, what do u mean by positive results? Do u mean better satisfaction? Involvement? Initially, my purpose to join these clubs was just to get to know ubc better and to get some networking. Not sure how much further u can get with this.

Networking...no. I have been with CSA and CCS, and know many close friends in DSC and CVC. When you are part of the exec team, you get to work with other people in your specific department. So let's say you are with CVC ski trip department. You'll be in charge of planning the event from start to finish. Sure, you'll be satisfied because you put in many hours of work. Sure, you'll be involved to some degree. Networking? Maybe. You may have to discuss deals with vendors, and maybe gather some sponsors.
If you truly want to be involved and build networks, such as doing charity stuff, or meeting big companies, then the Greek system (fraternity and sorority) will give you that.

what do u do within the CVC as a member and not as an exec? and do they hold regular meetings?
For these Chinese clubs, there are two types of involvement. You can be a regular member. You pay $8 or so, and you get to take part in the external events such as dances, ski trips, and maybe some contest or something. These events are not every week, instead these events are more like every month or so. You go to the events, but everyone is already in their own circle. In other words, if you don't go with your circle of friends, then you'll have to somehow meet people.
You can be an "exec". You are then part of the internal team. You plan the actual events. Also you will take part in the internal get togethers. You will meet other execs. You will probably make friends.
I have been using UBCSECURE since the beginning of the school year and I haven't had any trouble so not sure if its just your problem or it is affecting many others.

The first issue started early September. Due to too many people connecting to ubcsecure, our authentication server went down. It went up and then down again. In short, if you got to school early, you can probably connect just fine. Once you are authenticated, you don't have to authenticate again for some time. That explains why you had no issues. Those who cannot connect will have to keep hammering our server. If you got in, you got lucky. Most people can't. This is especially worse in our peak buildings like SUB and Bookstore. Buchanan is pretty bad too.
The second issue came up just a few days ago. We ran out of IP addresses. Too many wireless devices.

i said it before, theres way more rs'ers going to SFU, Bcit etc compared to UBC (hence the Whos at SFU thread is always active). Another reason why this thread isnt always bumped up is because not many rs'ers check out this "campus" section of threads :suspicious:

I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one. The noodles were horrible, I got noodles that were all cut up to be around 2cm long and soup was not as warm as I expect of pho soups. Eating pho from a bowl with bean sprouts, lemons, and all of that good stuff just isn't the same as eating it from a cylindrical paper container. That being said, it wasn't too bad of a noodle soup. It just doesn't deserve to be categorized as pho.

The "pho" place we r talking abt is located where subway and A&W is. Yeah, the noodles at the moon is pretty descent, one bad thing is that they hv a soup (the ones u use in the shower) taste due to the materials required to make the noodles. Its kinda stupid how they hire a kid to make the noodles for you.

That pho stand is garbage imo. The meat is quite good but the broth and noodle is terrible. But then again, most food stands in the SUB are garbage. I mean why can't we have a standard mall's food court.
The ones at the villages are a lot better if you don't mind walking a bit.

Henry angus's classrooms in the 3rd floor is usually empty if you need to study in the evening. Avoid dlam and birmmingham. CA hall is also pretty deserted past 5. If you can tune out the occasional dbag 1st and 2nd year business students then its a pretty cool place to study.

Doin a team project. Fuck, some people need to learn how to cooperate sometimes. One guy thinks his opinions are the best and convinces everyone to use his idea, he listens to nothing we have to say, and all hell breaks loose. He's telling us the parts that we did are feeble/weak and thinks we should scratch the parts that i personally spent 5 hours on. Haha :fuckthatshit: NO FUCKING WAY thats gonna happen. His parts = poorly supported, no research, all personal opinions. My part = well supported, 6 sources of research (minimum requirement pf 3) and all cited and ready to go.

Yep only 3 people including me did their parts. The other 2 has to be rewritten because it was all junk. 4 year sauder kids nonetheless. Me and another girl proofread the whole thing word by word couple of time. Somebody gonna get hurt real bad....
Teamwork is nice when it works though. I have had amazing teams. Guys whose fucking IQ and EQ are just off the chart. You still do the work but it feel like cruise control while you're at it.

From UBC website,
The Juris Doctor degree is granted on the successful completion of a three-year course and prepares students for admission to the practice of law (subject to further requirements that are set out below) and for business and public service. The number of students entering the practice of law in Canada has increased in the last few years and a degree in law is no guarantee of a position in either the necessary year of articles or in the practice of law.

And apparently its not just a TA strike, its a strike for a whole bunch of other workers as well (ie. construction workers, cafeteria workers, etc). I have no idea why construction workers would want to go on a strike though, they're getting more than enough work as it is, and most of the money going into the construction is pouring from OUR pockets. Like seriously, its ridiculous how they are tearing down the stairs at woodward, and at the building beside swing so they can build a new set of stairs that would look aesthetically more appealing. The stairs were functional, and that's all that matters. /rant

Economics is way too general and all theory. And you really need a graduate degree in economics in order to become an economist. But it does teach you analytical thinking and you'll definitely understand the world and the economy more. Some of my friends who are graduating with me have jobs lined up already, most of them in business doing all sorts of random stuff. Others are going to graduate school or doing the diploma in accounting etc. But most haven't even started looking or still don't know what they want to do. Its really up to the person if they are motivated enough to get off their asses and figure something out :rukidding:

Well, the thing is that he thinks his econ major will get him top notch financial/accounting jobs right on the spot. He's not willing to settle for more entry level positions (bank teller, sales rep, etc) because he cant let his pride down being in his late 20's (which imo, isnt really that old for him to start being picky over his jobs).
Energy

^ He must be dreaming lol. He is not going to get those kinds of jobs with an economics major and that's reality.
He should start at a bank as a CSR and work his way up. The stuff he learnt in econ isn't really applicable to those kinds of jobs.

Anyone know about the best options for parking in the summer? I have class from 9:00-12:30 twice a week for summer term

The open parking lots on Agronomy near the Starbucks if you only have class twice a week.
I actually parked in front of the bookstore without paying for the whole summer and only got caught on the last day of classes.

bookstore parking is the heatiest parking in the whole ubc. you are better off parking behind the music building which i did for the whole summer and got ticketed only once.
another hidden place to park is behind the anthro/soci building on northwest marine drive across from rose garden. I parked there alot and havent been caught.

i've taken phil 120. Its easy but annoying since u gota go to the lab to do the quizes which are timed. No midterms or papers or finals tho. All quizes (10 or something)

If you're looking for a gpa booster, definetly go for phil 120.
And go park at bookstore and don't pay, cus honestly, i'd take the risk of getting ticketed maybe at most twice in the semester, then paying the hefty parking fees.

If anyone needs english courses take it with Ina Bierman
Hands down easiest prof I've ever had
Class average is always above 80
U get a page (two for final) cheat sheet and she tells u exactly where you're gonna be tested on
I've had some ppl complaining about her accents. Dude who cares she's the easiest teacher ever.
But register ASAP, cuz her courses are always full (I guess everybody knows she's easy).
I took four different classes with her and all classes avg was btwn 80-85
And she's the biggest sweetheart ever. She like NEVER gets mad.
And best part? No need to get textbook (just look at her notes) And I skipped exactly 40% and still managed to pull 90+

That particular one is ultra clean. However I wouldn't want to step on the shower area with my bare feet. I know for a fact that quite an alarming number of people have sex there.
