Trading one giant rival for two - ARM/nVidia. The mobile chip market is fairly crowded already with those two and Qualcomm.

:noob:

maybe they should just put some more money into making better graphics driver

this might be good news for us...less competition = smaller advancements = longer shelf life of our hardware = less upgrades = save $$:alonehappy:

AMD HD7K SOUTHERN ISLANDS spec's are out:

More AMD HD7900 GCN (Southern Island) Details Leaked: Frequencies, Prices and Release dates (http://wccftech.com/amd-hd7900-gcn-southern-island-details-leaked-frequencies-prices-release-dates/)

Recent announcements and presentations from AMD suggest that the much anticipated 28nm Radeon HD7900 Series Graphic Cards will be launching in Q1 2012 (Jaunuary 2012). Other than the release dates, Technical specs which include frequencies and Next Gen GNC Core Architecture details have also been leaked.

According to a post by NordicHarware which detailed that the launch of AMD’s HD7000 Series is expected on 5th December 2011 however that was revealed to be a Press Conference in London of the cards rather than a launch exhibition as later unveiled by Fudzilla. Following are the specs of the HD7900 Series Graphic Cards:

GCN HD7970 (XT Tahiti):

The HD7970 is based on the 28nm Tahiti XT core and would be the fastest single chip GPU of the 7000 Series. It features a massive 2048 Cores (Shader Processors) or 32 CU (Compute Units),128 texture units and the core frequency is maintained at 1Ghz. One bad news is that AMD has ruled out the use of Rambus XDR2 memory and is reusing the 1.37 GHz GDDR5 quad data rate, ie at 5.5 GHz of bits used by these GDDR5 384-bit will result in 3 GB of RAM.

This means that the HD7970 would feature a record memory bandwidth of 264 GB / s against 174GB / s of HD6970. Pricing of the card would be set at $449 US.

GCN HD7950 (Pro Tahiti):

Just like its elder brother, The HD7950 would be based on the Pro version of the Tahiti Core which features 1920 cores (30 UCs), 120 texture units while the core frequency is maintained at 900Mhz. The GPU would feature a 3GB memory running at 5Ghz along a 384-bit wide memory interface. Memory bandwidth is rated at 240GB / s. Pricing of the HD7950 is expected around $349 US.

Both 7900 Series based HD7970 and HD7950 would be launched at the CES 2012 Event in Las Vegas, From 10 to 13 January.

GCN HD7990 (New Zealand):

Last up would be the flagship dual core monstrosity HD7990 codenamed New Zealand. The HD7990 would feature Dual HD7970/HD7950 Cores. The Core clock would be set around 900Mhz as rumored by BSN and the memory capacity would be set at 6GB (3GB x 2).

Pricing of the card would be similar to the HD6990 at $699 which is outstanding considering the performance leap the southern island GPU’s have to feature. Expect the launch of this dual core beast in March 2012.

While AMD is all focused in launching their HD7000 Series as early as possible, The Green Team at Nvidia is also preparing its Kepler Series graphic cards which are set to feature twice the performance increase then Fermi. Check em out here.

where did he get his price figures from? :suspicious:
$450 is steep compared to the 6970, no?
but i guess since they'll likely have the market domination for 6 months with a brand new architecture they could probably justify this price?

Total is $1065 before taxes. Thoughts? I will be gaming at 1680 x 1050 resolution, so is that video card unnecessary? Want to try some of the newer games like metro 2033.

I'd still go for a 6950 1GB... Metro 2033 is a b*tch to run with everything turned on. Otherwise the system looks good - except for the hard drive.

You don't want to be running an OS drive using a WD GREEN. They are way too slow. You will regret it.

My advice is spring for a SSD OS drive - good prices for them - and then pick up a hard drive later when you have more options as the shortages ease.

Wait until Boxing Day if you can. Stuff will be cheaper then.

http://techgage.com/reviews/amd/radeon/hd_6800_series/metro_2033_1680x1050.png
50fps on those settings is good enough I guess

If I try Crossfire later will I need a higher power supply, b/c thats why I went with that mobo and 750W supply (its on sale too)

may as well get a momentus XT (hdd/ssd hybrid) no? dont depend on what im saying im clueless :D

the 500gb xt was faster than the black and this new 750gb is supposed to be better than the 500 as the ssd portion is larger

What do you guys use your SSDs for? I'm thinking of getting one for the OS and all but other than that is it worth it if all im going to use it for is that? I usually only play single player games that require high end specs never multi (until i can get dota 2 -__-) so I most likely won't be installing any games on it and other than that I mainly use my computer for music production and recording. Any thoughts?

LuHua
12-09-2011, 08:18 PM
It'd decrease the OS loading time, program load times, file access, and that's probably about it. The storage space is at a premium, so you likely wouldn't be storing any large number of files on it anyway. If you put your single player games on it, they'd load fast as hell; it's actually more useless for multi player actually, you'll finish loading but the others still take forever lol. If you want to spend the money on it then do so, but it's likely not worth the cost for most people.

I should probably note that there's a few SSD companies that have serious reliability issues right now. Google before you buy.

For hypercube: ditch the eco. Just get something like a Hyper 212+ if it'll fit, it'll be just as quiet, cool just as well, and cost you only $20. The self contained water cooling systems like that are nice if your case is small, but they only cool as well as a decent heatsink at a few times the cost.

So I need some feedback too please!

Im building this computer to essentially replace my dying laptop.
I'm going to be hooking it up to 2 monitors I have already. Potentially 3 in the future
I'm primarily going to be using this station for web dev: that includes
-coding (with some IDE or even Dreamweaver for just pure webpages)
-Adobe CS5.5 family products

So this is not a gaming machine! I get way too easily addicted to games, so i've had to lay off installing any on my PC

I went with the A8 because it seemed decent with integrated graphics.
Not completely sold on it though as the processor itself seems weak

I'm also on a fairly tight budget. It's nice that it comes with integrated graphics

AMD A8-3850 $140
ASUS F1A75-V Pro ATX FM1 $110
Antec EarthWatts EA-380D GREEN ATX12V $45

Kingston HyperX KHX1600C9D3K2 8 gig $36.99

D-LINK DWA-556 Xtreme N Desktop Adapter $42.29

TOTAL 513.94

-I have an old Antec Sonata II case lying around. I bought it probably 6-8 years ago...but it should be fine right?
-And as Hard drive prices are ridiculous right now, im going to hold off. I have a 160gb spare seatgate drive lying around also from 6-8 years ago, and a 2TB NAS
-I also have a nvidia 7950 GT KO lying around. Is this something thats worth using in a build? (i could reconfigure it if so)
-And yes...i need a wireless adapter lol. thats one of the cheaper non usb ones i could find. I've never tried a usb WLAN adapter though (they are really cheap though)

sorry for turning this into my life story, but any comments guys?

Good thinking going with the A8. Even though the CPU part is weaker than what you'd get with Intel, it has a decent integrated GPU. Not good for games, but it will certainly help with your Adobe programs

But your NVIDIA card will probably be even faster, so there's really no reason to choose the A8 over an Intel Core i3 if you are going to use a video card.

SSDs are hot items on the market now. i got the crucial m4 just like Hondaracer. i was a bit sceptical about taking the plunge, but it was definitely worth it. on sata2 (on my previous desktop), cold boots took probably 30 seconds or so. on sata3 (current desktop), cold boots seemed to be reduced by another 10 seconds at least.

if you're really after storage, try to salvage a hard drive off a friend's older pc or laptop for now and wait until HDD prices stabilize. it's going to take at least 6 months. seagate's more likely to recover faster considering that they seem to have more factories outside of thailand.

SSD do have a 'hard limit' unlike mechanical drives. But mechanical drives are mechanical, so almost always die after 5 years or so. An SSD won't simply start 'clicking' on you, it will just stop writing to flash, a little bit at a time. And like Stylin said, it probably won't be for quite a while under normal circumstances.

Also, even when the flash expires, you will ALWAYS be able to read from it. It's only the WRITING that stops working, not the reading. So you won't lose data on a dead SSD. If you want, you can even keep using it as an archive :D

Sandforce FTL. I've been recommending against the SF-series powered SSD's since the first news of trouble came around. Their performance was also mainly concentrated in quick IOPS.

Crucial M4 or Intel SSD's are the way to go for reliability and speed that is just as fast.

Intel SSD's had an issue too where a crash would render the drive to report 8mb capacity

My first gen sandforce SSD has been working perfectly since I got it last year. Haven't installed my newer one yet but a firmware update fixes any issues that you may have heard of.

Sandforce drives aren't nearly as bad as people make them out to be. If you don't notice problems immediately, you can be 99% sure you won't have the problems people talk about (at least on your current system)

Just use a program like HD Tune if you really want to, but just know that the tests do use up a bit of your write cycles so don't run it too much. The M4 doesn't drop in speed by much, it has a TRIM-like feature that's very effective.

If stability is a concern to you, I suggest take a look at Plextor M2P SSDs.

I find it faster than M4 across same period (granted they ran different stuff, so, I can't say it's an identical comparison, but they both run 24/7) and less problem right out of box (4*m4 vs 8*M2P, one M4 had to be RMA'd while all 8 M2P have been flawless since we started using about 2 month ago)

SkinnyPupp
12-15-2011, 06:28 PM
The Plextor uses the same controller as the Crucial, but it uses Toggle flash instead of synchronous flash. Performance should be roughly the same, but your anecdotal RMA experience is probably not really relevant.

Would 60 gb be enough?
or should I just go big and get 120 so I will have nothing to worry about later on.!!

They're tested and guaranteed to work in pairs. That's about it.

SkinnyPupp
12-16-2011, 12:59 AM
Also 60 gb is nowhere near as fast. SSDs need a lot of parallel threads to run at full speed. That's why 2 drives using the same controller but different flash can be so different. For the MOST part, larger drives = faster

Sometimes you can get 2 'identical' 120GB drives, with the same controller and same type of flash chip. But one may have flash that only has 1 or 2 die per flash chip, while the other has 4. This was the case with A-Data S511 (http://www.hardcoreware.net/a-data-s511-120gb-review/) in my review.

This was also the case in my review of the OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS (http://www.hardcoreware.net/ocz-vertex-3-max-iops-120gb-review/). The 120GB version I tested has the hot 4 die flash, but with only 8 chips, it wasn't that much faster than the other drives that use 2 die flash, but with 16 chips.

it looks like the rumours of it being as fast as 6990 is true after all :joy:
apparently it will be running <300W during load thanks to the new 28nm architecture

it will be officially revealed next Thursday and will ship Janurary 9th when CES 2012 starts.

I will need a new PSU as mine only has 2x 6 pci-e pins :okay:

Since I'm going to move my system into my new case soon, I was wondering if you guys think its worth it for me to spring for a new modular PSU. Currently I am using a PCP&C Silencer 750. It's from 2009(2008?) and it has served me faithfully. Recently noticed more BSOD happening randomly and I'm worried that it is a sign of the PSU failing. Also, wondering about next generation GPU power requirements - will the 28nm process mean that they use less power or not necessarily? What power level do I need to budget for? I'm thinking something around 950-1000 watts.

i'm also in the market for a new PSU for the 28nm based cards

i am aiming for the 850w range...i'd think 1000w is overkill especiallly since the new cards are gonna be more power efficient...by how much? we'll find out on thursday.

1000w+ is only necessary if you go triple/quad SLI/CF or SLI/CF for dual GPU cards IMO

Yeah, how efficient the new cards are is going to play a major role in my PSU selection. I also want modular for better cable management... Non-modular is a total pain in the ass.

I really like the look of the Corsair HX/TX-M series, or the XFX Pro line.

OCZ PSU = no-no? There's a really good deal on at NCIX for an older Z-series 1000-watt unit. $139 after rebate.

i am not familiar with OCZ PSU but $140 doesn't seem that great of a deal for an old model? especially since OCZ is notorious for not honouring MIR's. I am sure OCZ PSU are safe to go with though...since they are so popular on the market.

from reading around it seems like the corsair TX850M or the XFX Pro850 xxx edition are the best bang for the buck..both of which are rebranded seasonic.

corsair is only 80 plus bronze where as the xfx is silver...but it has only 4 SATA connectors if you got tons of ssd/hdd

NZNT also has a rebranded seasonic with very similar specs (HALE82)

corsair can be had right now ~$110 after pricematch at ME
xfx is $120 with $30 MIR at NCIX
NZNT is $130 after PM at NCIX

of course..it makes sense to wait a few days for boxing sale deals..let's hope one of these are included.

I'm reviewing that case right now actually. It's a decent enough case, but there isn't much room behind the mobo tray to stuff your cables. There's enough if you have a modular PSU. And it's extremely heavy due to the dampening material.

Other than that, I like it.

Hondaracer
12-21-2011, 05:05 PM
yea, the dampening material seems to work very well, and its kinda nice they took the extra step to put the dampening material on all the removable panels as well

it was $129.99 with a $40 MIR at ncix.

I went to ME to price match it for $116.50 + taxes with $30 mail in rebate instead.

Prices for both stores come out almost the same with ME slightly cheaper and the fact I would rather have a $30 than $40 mail in rebate...

so true

One sad side note: GPU prices are not coming down in this high-end market. When the GTX 580 launched in November of 2010, it's MSRP was...$499. The same price it is selling for today. When the Radeon HD 6970 2GB launched the following month in December 2010, it sold for $369 - only $20 more than the price of that same card today. Had NVIDIA had some competition and reason to drop the price on the GTX 580 before today, then the Radeon HD 7970 3GB would likely have been priced much lower than the $549 MSRP that they are going to asking for in early January. This is a trend we hope we don't see continue.
i'm really surprised that the 580/6970 held its value so well considering the slower economy and that it ain't a new architecture

i guess we should just be glad they aren't charging $700 a piece:okay:

Intel's pretty good with MIR ..yeah? $120 is a lot to gamble haha

not sure if i should get the older OCZ Z 1000w for $110 MIR or the new corsair tx850m $90 MIR

i dont need the extra power but it's more efficient (80 Plus Gold)...but probably doesn't have the same quality as the corsair-rebranded seasonic...not to mention OCZ MIR are more PITA

leaning towards the corsair as I have ME credits to burn :alonehappy:
80 Gold is worth way more than a few hundred watts you'll never ever use.

Made a purchase on NCIX on the 25th, day of that online boxing sale. Haven't built a new computer in a long time.. Maybe about 5-6 years so quite out of the game with computers.

Any comments or suggestions on the parts I bought? I did a fair bit of research before purchasing, but just want to know what others think.

Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3 ATX LGA1155 Z68
Intel Core i7 2600K
OCZ Z-SERIES 1000W 80+ Gold
Powercolor Radeon HD 6970
Kingston HyperX 120GB SF-2281
Corsair Vengeance 16GB 4X4GB DDR3-1600

Came to ~$1400 with the case.

not sure about the OCZ PSU, from the research i did i pretty much went with a more expensive/lower watt corsair PSU than a higher watt other brand personally

Is it common to hear your hard drive kind of "start up" sometimes when directly accessing the content on that HD? all my OS etc. is installed on my SSD, but say I open explorer and explore the 1TB caviar black which is just storage, if its quiet in my room i can hear it kind of "start up" ?

yes it is normal because your storage drive isn't normally used so when you do "random access" on a file or whatnot, the hard drive has to spin up (your caviar black is a mechanical drive, it has moving parts unlike the SSD), so that is why you will hear your hard drive

however, you can minimaze those noise by buying shock absorbers that are like washers so they minimize the vibration from the hdd to the case

You sure you have all the power cable plug into the motherboard? Check your board to see if you have a different ATX12v input "might be a four pin plug" located somewhere else on the motherboard. If it doesn't boot past post it usually mean is not getting enough power.

For the z68 motherboard which would be a better choice? and why?
Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 or Asus P8Z68-V Pro?

Here's some of the key differences (may/may not be deal-breakers), based on site specs:

Gigabyte:

Max RAM frequency support: 2133mhz
Realtek LAN chip
3 PCI-E x1 Slots
3 SATA2 + 1 e-SATA ports
Firewire port on back panel built-in

ASUS:

Max RAM frequency support: 2200mhz
Intel LAN chip
2 PCI-E x1 Slots
4 SATA2 + 1 e-SATA ports
Built-in Bluetooth adapter

I was in the same boat as you in terms of choosing between the two boards. I chose the ASUS board mainly because it had one extra SATA port. I have quite a few hard drives hooked up and I'm planning to add more in the future. Don't get me wrong, both boards are great. I've used ASUS and Gigabyte boards for my builds and I've been happy with them.

ASUS adds a nice extra touch to their higher end boards as well by giving you an adapter that allows you to easily connect your case's power switch/reset cables to the motherboard easier. It's not much of a deal-breaker, but it helps out a lot when putting everything together.

Hope this helps. Again, you can't go wrong with either board.

I'm going to take a bit of a guess but it sounds a bit like WDIDLE (WD's intellipark feature) is enabled on your drive, which isn't supposed to be the case for the blacks. Is it the spin-up sound you get as if you were to cold-boot your pc? If so, then WDIDLE may be causing it.

I have blacks and greens in my desktop. I immediately noticed that happening with my greens. I thought it would be fine, but I read around that it can reduce the lifespan of the drive motors so I immediately disabled it. Since I've done that, I haven't noticed any "start up" sounds that you may be speaking of.

edit: my bad for the double post, decided to answer another question.

3 of the gigabyte mobo and 2500k combos came randomly in stock today so I luckily picked one up!!

But to answer your question, they asked if I wanted quick mount..which is like them mounting the cpu and ram onto the motherboard for free..I said yes so they did it for me..(guess if anything happens to it they're on the hook?)

The other option is telling them no you don't need quick mount, in which they took out the motherboard and let me inspect the cpu socket before selling to me..and I had to initial that I checked the pins were not bent (I originally thought they charged for quick mount but found out later they did it for free so let them do it)

No fucking way. Wouldn't that consider used? That's why I like NCIX, I am more than capable of building a system but for the $50 for them to assemble it, even if you don't load an OS on it of you ask nicely they will load one on then remove it after they run all their tests

It's not that big of a deal but it's nice to bring home a computer you at least know is working at the moment rather than running into unexpected problems with components that are unopened

This is a budget gaming set up right? I think you should spend more money on a graphics card than a CPU for performance.

Not a budget gaming setup, but would be nice because my cousin does a little bit of gaming. She currently plays L4D2 on some shitty GeForce 6000.

One question..

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Quad Core Processor 3.2GHZ AM3 8MB Cache 125W Retail Box
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Quad Core Processor 3.2GHZ AM3 8MB Cache 125W Retail Box - AMD - HDZ955FBGMBOX (http://ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=47459&promoid=1301)

On the motherboard specifics, it says it supports CPUs up to 95W. The X4 955 has a TDP of 125W.

Will there be negative effects from this pairing? I did some Googling online, and from what I found, the CPU does run on the motherboard.

You would be running the voltage regulation circuit out of spec, and the board would probably die within a year.

That's why it's cheap.

"We are aware of an issue that is currently affecting a small number of users whereby their m4 causes their system to require a restart. This issue occurs after approximately 5,000 hours of actual “on time” use. Following the initial reboot, the system then requires subsequent restarts after each additional hour of use. However, the data on the SSD is unaffected and will not be lost due to this condition.

Through our investigation, we have determined the root cause of the problem and will be releasing a firmware update that rectifies the situation. We are currently running through our validation and compatibility process. Once this process is complete, the firmware will be made available to our customers. Although we understand the desire of some people to start using unreleased firmware now, we want to ensure that our solution works across multiple chipsets, systems, and operating systems before publishing the release code. We are currently targeting the week of January 16th, 2012 to publicly release the new firmware update.

We understand the impact that this is having on some users right now and apologize for this inconvenience. We appreciate your continued support, feedback, and patience as we finalize code and resolve this issue.

At first I disable pagefile.. but then googled a bit.. not recommand for people with 4 gb or less...
So I went with 1024 mb..

But still get the same error .. but window tell me to close it.. doesnt freeze the comp..

Now I check automatic manage pagefile ..
Doesnt freeze or anything.. I'm guessing people only do it to save room for their ssd?
But I still have quite a bit of space left...!

problem identified and firmware fix on the way! there's no need to hit the panic button at all.

i just got mine today...how u like your m4?

i've had mine since june/july and i love it! the current firmware version provided a nice performance boost compared to when i initially bought it. cap it off with my new desktop which i got just weeks ago, i got even more of a boost. win7 from cold boot takes about 15 seconds or less to get to the logon screen. im sure part of it is because of my other new components but i'm not complaining.

strange... i guess if there's no problem with it being automatically managed, it's better than no problems. again, i just do that to prevent unnecessary writes to prolong my ssd's life, or so i read on hwcanucks. i'll probably do a bit more research on it when i have time. how much space do you have left? i have mine running at about 60% capacity.

People, stop doing things like disabling prefetch and cache, etc. You are breaking windows. It is meant to work with all that stuff on, and is aware of SSDs, so there's no reason to move or disable them.

There are a few stuff you could turn off in windows when you get SSD. It doesn't affect the OS much, it's only comes down to the constant reading the SSD for data feed. But you don't really need that when your drive is fast enough. (you won't notice much performance difference) It only theoretically shorten your SSD life. (not by much, but for those anal enough to care)

Some of them that I can think of for Win7:
drive indexing (allow faster access to file on HDD, but SSD is too fast to need this)
defrag schedule (again, not exactly needed on SSD)

SkinnyPupp
01-06-2012, 08:01 AM
Like I keep saying over and over and over again. Windows 7 is aware of SSDs. You do not need to disable anything. It will disable the things it doesn't need for you, such as defrag schedule, superfetch, etc. leave that alone, leave the pagefile alone (moving it is stupid since you would be losing the benefit of having an SSD in the first place), etc.

That's the last I'll say on this. It still bothers me to see bad advice being given over and over again though. If you want to follow that, go for it, but don't repeat it if you don't know what you're talking about.

The deals are NOT that good TBH. The good stuff is probably the monitors (prices seem to be the same for past 2 other sales Ive been to) and certain laptops (educated guess). The rest are either warm deals or stuff not worth freezing your balls off for.

e.g. that white Antec case for 50 bucks. Its avail online right now for same price brand new, and during Boxing day it was $40. Plus buying an Antec case in this day and age is kind of dumb considering how much more refined and better value their competitors' cases are.

I don't care about over-clocking and all that shit, just looking to play D3 at max details + movies and shit. I've done up a few builds on NXIX but am looking for another opinion.

Thoughts on processor/mobo/graphics etc? Thanks

Good luck bro... Max details for $500? Case, PSU, motherboard, CPU, RAM AND video card? :heckno:

Anyhow... :accepted:

Blizz recommends the following "OS: Windows Vista®/Windows® 7 (Latest Service Packs) | Processor: Intel® Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz
or AMD AthlonTM 64 X2 5600+ 2.8 GHz | Memory: 2 GB RAM | Video: NVIDIA® GeForce® 260 or
ATI Radeon™ HD 4870 or better"

so I think $500 is pretty do able, no? I can go above $500 if really needed to meet max specs on a 24" screen, but yeah, wanna keep it as low as possible.

Any suggestions on better choices for a desktop mainly for gaming and schoolwork..

Specs are :

Case: Corsair 500RR.. dont know much about cases, however this was recommended for me
Processor: i7 2600k 8MB Cache 3.4ghz Or i5 2500k
Motherboard: asus p8z68 vpro
heatsink: corsair hydro h70 liquid cooling --> Dont know if i should just stick with fans instead of liquid cooling
memory: Corsair vengence 16gb
HD: 1TB Seagate barracuda sata III with 64mb cache
video card: evga GeForce GTX 560 Ti 2GB GDDR5 PCI-E w/ Dual DVI, HDMI or 448 cores
power supply: Cooler master 600 watt extreme power plus OR Corsair CX600 V2 600 watt --> is this enough or too much power?

Any help with lowering price without hindering performance would be much appreciated !
Also, it just fits under my budget of $1500 taxes in.

Can someone recommend me a build for around $700 before taxes? Friend wants it for gaming..(Diablo 3, BF3, etc)

Planning on doing an i5 2500k build, since it seems like the best bang for the buck for gamers right now. I took the items off ME because they offer free assembly.

mobo: GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3 Gigabyte GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3 w/ Dual DDR3 2133, 7.1 Audio, Gigabit Lan, CrossFireX / SLI at Memory Express (http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX33372)
ram: GSKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB PC3-12800 GSKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB PC3-12800 Dual Channel DDR3 Kit (2 x 4GB) at Memory Express (http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX33234)
GPU: HIS Radeon HD 6870 1GB GDDR5 HIS Radeon HD 6870 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E w/ Dual DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort at Memory Express (http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX35404)
CPU: intel i5 2500k 3.30 GHZ w/ 6MB Cache Intel Core (http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX31557)
PSU: Silverstone Strider Essential 700W Power Supply Silverstone Strider Essential 700W Power Supply at Memory Express (http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX32276)
Case: Zalman Z9 Plus Case w/ Fan Controller Zalman Z9 Plus Case w/ Fan Controller at Memory Express (http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX31654)

Total $724.94 before taxes/MIR

Could anyone chime in on this build? I'm not too sure which mobo/ram/gpu is suited for this budget. I know more $$ should be spent on the graphics card, but I think going i5 2500k is better bang for the buck vs going AMD at this budget point.

Where were you when they had the boxing day deals? Could have saved enough to go crossfire on 6870's which is what I have :) but build looks fine. Just get a decent air cooler. I recommend hyper evo, then u can get a nice OC

Thanks I'll check it out, but I don't think friend will be ocing. Yeah.. missed the boxing day sale and also missed the ME late boxing day sale few days ago.. (the i5 2500k combo with mobo and ram for like $300 could have saved like $130 easily)
