Official Building/Upgrading thread

Though it might be a good idea to make a thread dedicated to all te building/upgrading questions, I was recently banned for a week so i couldn't ask some of the questions I wanted in terms of where NCIX price matches etc, but I think I got the lowest price I could from NCIX at least, here's the build I put together:
Intel i7 2600k
Asus P8Z68 Pro Z68
Mushkin Enhanced Frostbyte DDR3-1600 2X4GB
Sapphire Radeon HD 6950
Crucial M4 128GB SSD
WD Caviar Black 1TB
Corsair Pro HX650W
Fractal Design Define R3 ATX mid tower
over my lifetime/families, we've probably had between 14 and 16 computers starting way back with old atari machines etc. then computers like 386 etc.
this is probably the highest end/most current build i've ever had
EDIT* BTW, basically got the lowest price possible on every component at NCIX that they would allowably price match, taxes in the final was $1,520
Anyone have any advice/software to recommend regarding SSD's etc?

Stay away from the SF-2281 units right now... some issues are cropping up.
Intel 320/510-series units and the Crucial m4 units are terrific and rock solid. Intel's toolbox for SSD's is great but it only works for Intel units. I currently run the 320-series 120GB unit.

I was going to go with the 80gb 320 series but for the price/bang for the buck I went with the M4

anyone recomend any good/quiet 120mm fans from NCIX?
NCIX.com - Buy Fans & Cooling In Canada. (http://ncix.com/products/index.php?minorcatid=1164)
they all have basically 4.5/5 reviews, but i dont know what the noise difference will be between a 3000 RPM fan and a 1000
roastpuff

The Gelid Wing series are very quiet, long lasting, and look terrific. I have the UV Green Wing, and my case is nearly silent. Noise difference will be quite noticeable between 3000RPM and 1000. You want to pick the best balance between airflow, noise and cost.
A bit expensive though... I got mine on sale when they were $7 each or something - VERY worth it.

I use noctua case fans on my pc. They work great and are speed adjustable with included resistors. I have no windows on my case so looks aren't important. 4 installed on my case.

Intel 320 is a horrible idea. Overpriced and slow.
If you don't want to get Sandforce, then Crucial M4 is the way to go. Otherwise, Intel 510, but that is even more expensive.

Popular ones are Prime95 or you can also try IntelBurn Test.
I've switched to IntelBurn Test since that doesn't take forever to finish.
Also, run cpu-z and some temperature monitoring program like realtemp etc. when you are benching.
Semi-noob question here:
How do you tell if memory and your motherboard are compatible? My mobo (ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3) is a year old and the QVL has not been updated since May 2010, according to the ASUS website. Since RAM prices are so low, I figure I may as well buy now.
RAM in question is this: Vengeance (http://www.corsair.com/memory-by-product-family/vengeance/vengeance-low-profile-blue-8gb-dual-channel-ddr3-memory-kit-cml8gx3m2a1600c9b.html), mobo as listed above.

Just ran into a headache with the new rig here, I bought a windows 7 pro student upgrade thing, I bought these before and was able to do clean installs because I had XP on the computer I was upgrading
So now when I tried to install this new 7 on my new rig, it said the key is only valid for an upgrade and cannot be activated with a clean install..
Will it work if i format and throw on XP? Or should I download a copy of vista put that on then upgrade?

You can install Windows 7 upgrade as a full version by installing it twice :)
Either that, or there are some registry tricks you can do. Just google it.

You're better off getting a single 580 rather than two 560Ti's.
2x 460GTX is already faster and cost less than a single 580.
But I'm not sure if 2x 560 is gonna be the same. I'm guessing it would be a bit faster than a single 580. The cost of 2x 560 is around the same as a single 580
Might upgrade CPU/MOBO/RAM/GFX this christmas.. What's the differences between a Z68 or P67 board? Last time I paid attention to chipsets was P45/X48

Is there a reliable program to display FPS? Or should I just try to search down commands to display in game?
Because what FRAPS is showing doesn't seem to reflect the actual gameplay I'm experiencing, besides areas with massive detail and tonnes ambient lighting there are almost no slow downs even in high action situations
Btw, anyone know much about the TPU switch on my mobo? Automatic clock speed optimization? Seems like a good match with the 2600k but from reading on overclock.net the general sentiment is that it's better off manually overclockin than using the switch?

that thing is beautiful no doubt.. but wtf parts they put in there? a complete one starts at 6000usd?? how much does the case cost? 4k? i'm sure you can build a really high end computer for 2k.. so where does the other 4k go??
Question: How much does a murderbox cost?
A complete murderbox starts at $6,000USD and goes up from there, depending on the amount of custom work involved.
A well appointed murderbox with a single liquid cooling loop, GPU and a few drives typically comes in around the $7,000USD mark while something on the level of Daniel's 008 build is in the neighborhood of 2-3x that. Every murderbox is executed to perfection – it really comes down to degrees of "ultimate".

AMD Bulldozer FX is coming soon, you might want to wait and see how that does. All unlocked, gobs of cache, 8 cores, and can overclock like a mother :)

AMD Bulldozer FX is coming soon, you might want to wait and see how that does. All unlocked, gobs of cache, 8 cores, and can overclock like a mother :)
Also, Intel has Ivy Bridge coming after that. Six cores with 12 threads
Lots of goodies to play with in the coming weeks :D
so from a quick google it doesnt sound like Ivy Bridge will be available until next year?
and AMD "this quarter" i dunno if i my dad can wait that long he's already bitching about the frame rate on the BF3 beta :lol

BTW, anyone got a decent guide to overclocking? i'm curious

I think its just going to match or slightly surpass SB performance. If AMD had anything game changing, they wouldnt hold back flaunting it. Everyone saw what happened when they knew that Llano was better than SB mobile. So instead, all we had so far are years of missed deadlines (all of them they set themselves), which AMD refuses to comment on and in fact, tells the anxious enthusiast market to go home and stop asking. Keep in mind many of these people have already bought AM3+ boards, who I think has even more right to know whats going on with the chip.
The only indication of SB-level performance are the motherboard choices. BD better be good enough to warrant an expensive Sabertooth or UD7. Whether you buy based on price/performance or on politics...choose wisely. Also don't forget: SB is almost 10 months old now.
Anyways, the latest rumor is that the chips will be available on Oct 12.
Haven't seen a murderbox personally, but the best case I have come across personally in term of craftsmanship and quality are Soldam Windy cases.
Their attention to detail extends to every corner of the case down to the bolts used. If you want the ultimate case, find one of that. My friend who carried one back from Japan has been using it for the last 10 years. Worth every penny IMHO

Little bulldozer review, makes me feel better about copping out for the 2600k
Conclusions
I said from the beginning that Bulldozer architecture is a turning point for AMD, defining what will happen to the company's products in the coming years also, knowing the philosophy behind this new architecture, and most fans both new company or simply technology enthusiasts have built many expectations about the Bulldozer. 8 cores combined in an effective, attention by mainstream market AMD FX brand and achieve a return of 8.43 GHz frequency before launch, all fit this product seems to be very competitive.
But with our short passing test suite, we had the most brutal awakening since test components and write reviews, pure and simple, it is difficult to find a scenario where the bulldozer is a competitive solution. Handbrake only approach the performance of i7 2600K and with lower price may be considered a smart choice, assuming you only x264 encoding, but what about heat dissipation and energy consumption, of the approximately 250 RON save will have to buy a cooler better and we will remain current for many bills. Or what of the lack of vigor in multithreaded applications less, or downright tragic performance in floating point calculations? How justified that in some benchmarks is considerably slower than its predecessor, the Phenom II? How explain that encourages overclocking AMD producer, but Bulldozer double their energy consumption and so much just by raising the frequency and voltage in modest limits?
And we can not even enjoy the fact that AMD motherboards are usually cheaper because Bulldozer requires a motherboard with a power floor very, very strong to cope with current consumed by the processor, so therefore quite expensive talking about models that bring the cost to a platform similar to the Intel platform.
Unfortunately for us Bulldozer was not what we expected, and the disappointment is even greater as this architecture marks five years since AMD has lost market leadership processors, and 5 years from the last iteration of the FX brand . As a user of the Athlon 64, I remember the aura of exclusivity now that benefited expensive FX series processors, which fully deserves its price but because they were able performance. 5 years later, we are dealing with the hurting memory of his ancestors FX, a significantly lower performance than the competition and significantly higher consumption. And, in this case the price really does not matter. We want to see $ 1,000 AMD processors able to fight alongside solutions from Intel, not cheap products that do not justify their price anyway.
We can only hope that AMD will somehow fix the problem even in short-term energy consumption by a new revision, otherwise quite dark days loom for this area, as lack of real competition at this level does not bring anything good for the consumer final.

All you need to know about BD, short and sweet:
"We won't deny it, we really were hoping for a lot more from Bulldozer and AMD's eight-core processors. It's disappointing to find these newly launched processors do little to improve AMD’s situation. The FX processors come short of competing hand to hand with the now 9-months old Sandy Bridge processors, and in certain instances surpass their own Phenom II range."

Bus speed x Multiplier = CPU speed
1648.5 MHz is your idle speed.
What you want to do is run prime95 and see what your cpu speed is at max load.
Then turn on the TPU switch and run prime 95 and see what your speed is at max load.
Compare the 2 and see if improvement.
TPU switch is the 'i am a noob at overclocking do it for me' switch. Learn how to manual overclock for getting more out of your cpu.
overclocking is basically configuring your bus speed and multiplier to get a higher cpu speed.

If you're not overclocking, you don't need an overclocker board, which will have 12+ phase power supplies, etc. All you need is a good 4 phase board with decent parts. IE any Gigabyte Z68. The one I reviewed last week is a great example of a mainstream Z68 board, although has some flaws worth mentioning.

Please don't buy that. Everything you had mentioned can be replaced. Good thing you came into this thread :)
CPU: $200-$300 Core i5 2500k or i7 2600k. Price/Performance the 2500k is better. +$100 you get Hyperthreading + 2MB L3 Cache which is hardly noticeable unless you do 3d rendering, video encoding...etc you would have benefit from HT. X58 LGA1366 is almost 3 years old and X79 chipset LGA2011 is almost released. Either wait for that or go with the above.
COOLING: $100 H100 is good as I use one myself.
MOBO: $200-$350 ASUS P8Z68-V Pro Z68 LGA1155 (NOT GEN3. Should be releasing soon) or MSI Z68A-GD80 (GEN 3) Z68 or ASUS Maximus IV EXTREME-Z Rog LGA1155 Z68
RAM: $60 Corsair CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 Vengeance 8GB 2X4GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24 Dual Channel Memory Kit (I use this and like it)
GPU: $500 2x Radeon 6950's FLASHED TO 6970's
CASE: $150-$200 Corsair 800D is a beautiful case, albeit not meant for air cooling. I have a 650D myself. If you are looking for full tower, take a look at the "Cooler Master Haf 932 Advanced Full Tower EATX Case ". I can't stand tacky LED's but really good bang for your buck.
PSU: $275 Corsair Professional Series Gold CMPSU-1200AX 1200W ATX Fully Modular 80PLUS Gold Power Supply
HDD: $80 WD blacks are awesome.
SSD: $210 Get something like 2x 60gb and run it in RAID0. Mobo's now feature "Intel Smart Response Technology" but I never tried it before so I stick to my RAID0 setup.
Total of $1775-2075 *without taxes*
This leaves you around $800 to play with if you were to get the setup you had first chosen.
Throw in a nice sound card, quieter fans, keyboard, mouse, monitors...etc
Keep in mind that the new X79 chipset and socket LGA2011 are nearing. That means new motherboards + new CPU's.
If I were you I would prob buy a cheaper mobo + i5 2500k and upgrade when Ivy Bridge releases in April/May 2012.

Corsair A70 heatsink (on sale for $30 right now can't go wrong),
your 6gb ram won't work as z68 boards are dual channel memory. RAM is cheap less than <$60 for 8GB.
2x radeon 6870's in crossfire.
Around $800 right there

anybody else have the asus p8p67 rev 3 board?
my first one was plagued with usb issues, usb peripherals worked fine, any keyboard, mouse, printer, logitech gt wheel......... BUT anything usb plugged with storage would be fried.
eg...flash drives and 2 of my iphone 4's bricked ......:okay:
now my tablet and dslr wont connect to any PC or mac, but thankfully both still work
Ive done the bios updates, nothing would fix the problem, returned it to ncix and
got new p8p67 board, everything works fine except now but the usb 2.0 ports dont work (case AND rear ports), only the usb 3.0 works. I'm sick to my stomach, im tired of running back and forth to ncix for exchanges. And they wouldn't honour the damages the previous board caused either.....

Too bad he needs it right away, UltraBooks are going to be The Next Big Thing.
UltraBook is a spec defined by Intel where the laptop must be 20mm thick at most, 3 lbs max, powerful, 5-8 hours of battery life, use SSD, and cost under $1000 for a mainstream model. Basically, MacBook Air killers
Maybe they have started to come out, look around... some models are Acer 3951, Asus UX21, UX31, Levovo U300S, Toshiba Z830. Should all be around $1000. I'd go for the UX31 since it is the only one with a high resolution.

The only catch is that none of these have a serial number or windows. he can even do a clean install with only factory drivers as long as I can provide him with a legit windows key.
He could only build one unit for himself a month. He promised me he will make me the top of the line Z next month!!

Maybe they haven't logged/tagged them yet and they are just sitting in the back, or something. In any case, I'm sure they will be on the sales floor soon.

has anyone considered going with tri-monitor 1080p all in landscape set-up?
I may be able to get screens for cheap but I am wondering just how much video card power one would need to play high settings (not ultra) on BF3 @ 5760x1080...have to wait for it to get benched first i guess
someone claimed 40 fps with overclocked 6970 in CF on alpha trial (he does only have 4GB ram though)

I would think at least 2xGTX580 or 2x6970's. Better if you have GTX590's or 6990's running CF/SLI. Or a Tri-SLI config. :D

I'm also looking into buying a 17" gaming laptop. After some research, i've concluded that the only viable brands are sager(np8170), msi(gt780r) or asus(g74sx). I'm leaning towards sager right now and most people recomment it over all the others.
Edit* just ordered a sager but its only the 8130(15" version) :okay: Still 1080p but lighter so its all good.
i was about to go with the sager myself
but i checked out vaio once again and realized that i have enough points to redeem for one :fullofwin:

Depends if you're building or upgrading. Didn't see any GPUs (could be wrong, they might be hiding on the centre rack), but saw P8P67's for $100. Saw some SIlverstone PSU for $60 (couldnt make out the spec). That centre rack might have a lot of good shit but the video didnt capture much.
Anyways I'm going for the monitors, cheap old mobo, and cheap HTPC case.
Overall not INSANE, but if you dig around I'm sure you'd find something sweet. Last time my friend scored a $120+ monitor arm that bolts onto the desk for $20.
and protip: Dont buy those $60 HAF 922s, or the 800D. HAF 912 is really good, and usually at $50 or less new. Those 800D's were $100 bucks before.

i'm trying to setup 5.1 but whenever i switch to the DVD5.1 on the receiver i only get a very flat 2 channel sound soming out of my 2 fronts, nothing from center, sub, or rears
so i might need to get an optical out for my comp? on my realtek audio panel there it's also set to 5.1 output currently

for analog 5.1 from pc to receiver i.e. 3.5mm->RCA, you need three diff sets and three cables:
1) center/sub
2) front left/right
3) rear left right
find an optical out jack or get a sound card. much easier that way to run a single optical cable, toslink or coaxial.

If not going to OC, you don't need a 2500K, a normal 2500 is identical at stock speed. (edit, I Just saw that this is a combo package. check first to see if it is significantly cheaper to get the non-K version, it might not be if that package is discounted enough)
Get the DDR3 1600 kit if you can for the same price. It will offer a tiny bit of performance in some scenarios, but at the same price why not?

well his bday is next saturday :/
Grab that Kingston kit at NCIX you won't get a better deal than that on ram.
At 1920 I think a 6870 or GeForce 560 would be plenty. But it's up to you if you want to go all the way with it :)
well maybe ill grab the 6870 and tell him the new cards are coming out Jan :D
and with the savings maybe i'll get him an SSD instead (although the 10sec-ish less load times doesn't seem worth it to me)
thanks guys

SSD basically eliminates one huge bottleneck from your system. If you have the best CPU, Ram, Video Card, etc, and a mechanical drive.. that is like driving a Ferrari with one tire missing.

^ lol really? i was looking at those load times comparo videos and it doesn't seem that significant (ssd)

Loading my games such as BF3, Skyrim etc on my SSD it's noticeably improved, loading times that have things written for info etc don't even stick around long enough usually for me to read what they have to say

My only regret in getting an SSD is that I didn't get one sooner!

It's not really something that can be fully experienced by looking at benchmark results or numbers. It just feels like your system is running at its full potential.

Launch is at midnight
3960X was the only one Intel sent.
I'll post my review here when it's up

Intel Core i7 3960X Extreme Review (http://www.hardcoreware.net/intel-core-i7-3960x-sandy-bridge-e-review/)
TLDR: Fastest desktop CPU ever costs $1000. One that is 95% as fast will be $600 and worth every penny. (if you can afford it)
For gaming, pretty much anything with at least 2 cores is enough.

I'm thinking of upgrading my video card to place BF3 and Skyrim. Which 1 of the following do you guys think is better?
XFX Radeon HD 6850 Fansink 775MHZ 1GB 4.0GHZ GDDR5 (http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=63985&vpn=HD685XZCFC&manufacture=XFX&promoid=1190)
or
Gigabyte Radeon HD 6850 Windforce 820MHZ 1GB 4.2GHZ GDDR5 (http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=58225&vpn=GV-R685OC-1GD&manufacture=Gigabyte&promoid=1190)
or
EVGA GeForce GTX 550 Ti Superclocked 1024MB GDDR5 (http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=59502&vpn=01G-P3-1557-KR&manufacture=eVGA&promoid=1190)
or
Anything else less than $150
Also, what's the minimum amount of power would I need?.
Thanks
Skyrim is more CPU-limited than GPU-limited.
Any of those cards will handle Skyrim fine if you have a decent modern CPU. With a 1090T @ 3.9 GHz, 8 GB DDR3 1600, and an ATI HD 5850 1GB, I run Skyrim on Ultra settings, 4x AA, 16x AF @ 1920x1200 at a pretty consistent 60 FPS (A few of the towns drop it into the 20s/30s in certain areas, but it's at 60 FPS in dungeons, outside, etc. when it matters).
Battlefield is another story, though. It's almost entirely GPU-oriented, so the graphics card will matter more. I don't think either card is going to be ideal for High-Quality @ 1080P (my 5850 barely does High Quality @ 1920x1200 and it's faster than those cards), but they should be fine on Medium.
Have you considered spending a little more for the HD 6870/GTX 560, which are a fair amount quicker and go for about $175/$180 (before rebate) ?
As for how much power is sufficient, that will depend on what else is in your system and what your upgrade plans are for the future. A decent 500W PSU should be sufficient, but it might be a little noisy if you have say a 140W TDP processor.

toms tested like 30 cards for BF3 you may want to give it a read
Battlefield 3 Performance: 30+ Graphics Cards, Benchmarked : Battlefield 3 Reinvigorates PC Gaming (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/battlefield-3-graphics-performance,3063.html)
i probably should have gone with nvidia though seems like it does BF3/skyrim better
something you may want to consider q0192837465 is change your username :P and that nvidia cards seem to get a few more FPS than radeon for those games that you want to play (and every little bit counts)
also Black Friday is coming up next week you should hold off buying until this sale @ ncix is just about over and then purchase and then wait to see if there are any better deals on Black Friday and if there are just cancel the order :)
as for my build for my dad i ended up going with a 6970 :/

I prefer Nvidia, because their drivers are almost always prepared for a new game. When a new big game comes out, ATI usually has to scramble to release betas, which can break other games.

Thx guys, nVidia it is then. Now I'll have to see if they go on sale soon. I have no problem spending up to $200 for the graphics card.
Also, is Q6600 sufficient to be considered a "modern" processor?

Recently upgrade my video card form a GTS460 to a 6950 with a new PSU! The only issue I have now is which SSD to get.... seems there are a lot of fix reviews on them. Some say is good and other said it died withn a month.
Want a SSD that will last a few years (hopefully). Doesn't have to be big just something around 100GB should be fine.
Also will be needing a new case soon! That 6950 barely fits into my case lol.

At least until the next console generation, and even then it will be good probably. Current consoles were already outdated by at least a year when they came out, and have been holding back graphics ever since.

read the link i posted; i was going to get the same card, in that thread apparently some have unlocked that very card
I need a silent video card.... (I don't game on my PC much) that can accomodate:
1) lcd with displayport/dvi/vga (6-bit panel, DP not too important i guess)
2) lcd with dvi/vga
3) tv with hdmi
Right now, I'm using a fanless 5450 that has vga/dvi/hdmi, with 2/3 displays on at any given time. Ideally, something that can pump out all three would be nice. Is it just easier/cheaper to keep the 5450 and add anther card?
