^ thanks for the advanced warning. I've only heard bad things about OCZ. I was almost leaning towards an OCZ SSD.

I've only had to warranty with WD and EVGA. Both have been great. Just fill out a basic form, and ship it out. Usually see a replacement within a week or so.

So I bought a Logitech K400 wireless keyboard/touch pad, since my wireless mouse died, and it can put my laptop to sleep and wake it up as well!

:fullofwin: sweet

http://www.logitech.com/assets/37072/4/wireless-touch-keyboard-k400-amr-glamour-images.png

i almost got that... but i settled for this:

K481 · Keyboards · Equipment · ARCTIC (http://www.arctic.ac/en/p/living/accessories/409/k481.html?c=2193)

http://www.arctic.ac/p/images/articles/8ff52c380480415101db8badfc537dca_0.png

it was 10 bux cheaper and super small and portable. i can just throw it beside the couch when i wanna watch a movie or something i don't have to go back to my station to use the mouse or keyboard.

my only complaint is.. it is a bit hard to type on cuz it's so small. but it's okay if it's a secondary keyboard... or if you're a little kid. lol!

I bought a cpu and a copy of windows 7 oem about 2.5 years ago and reformatted two or three times already.

question: Is there a limit on how many times I can reinstall windows 7 on my system? Because I remember on my old computer, with Windows XP, I think I got to a point where it wouldn't let me activate winXP anymore with the windows geniune thing.

So about that OCZ power supply that crapped out on me the other week.... their warranty return process is so lame, they asked me to do about a dozen things involving, pdf's scanning, faxing.....

I was just so annoyed, I'd rather lose $80 then do all that shit, and reminded them of how a real company does warranty returns... When my Logitech mouse had a battery problem where it would drain way too fast, they sent me a brand new mouse all they asked for is the serial number, and they let me keep the old one which works just fine wired up.
They did the same thing for 2 other peripherals of theirs I had, that's how it's done..... maybe Logitech spoiled me with their methods..... but are warranty returns all supposed to be this complicated ?

won't be buying OCZ again, didn't do enough research into their power supplies they only offer 2 years warranty, other better quality ones offer 5, that would have tipped me off to their quality if I had known about it

My OCZ psu has been running strong for 3~ years now. That being said, I didn't get my $20-25 MIR (I called the MIR company they use, and they said it was sent out to me and already used, when I never even received it). I think PSU's are a hit and miss though, my friend's Antec 80+ gold certified PSU died in less than a month.

What do you guys think of NCIX's LP1 PC for $1300?

Think it can handle battlefield 4 in max settings?

Just give microsoft a call and they will reactivate the key. Don't even need to talk to anyone. its just a machine asking you to put in the cd key.

any ideas what to do with two evga GTX 260's?

one of them is a core 216 if that matters at all.

they're laying around... i could sell them on CL for 50 bux each... but the money isn't really important to me. I'd rather find some use for them... but I can't think of any use. or potential future use? lol...

there's not much info on FB3 right now but it really just looks like a tweaked FB2

It is being listed as DX11 only...I'm guessing it'll push hardware like Crysis 3

Yup we don't know enough, so it's impossible to say. I wouldn't count on it running the same speed as BF3 though. So if a 660 Ti struggles to maintain 60 fps in BF3, it will be even slower in BF4 most likely. You'd have to disable some features

So i kept forgetting to post here, but I've got this weird question:

I installed my new SSD (ermagerd) and everything's fine and dandy. But. On the other HDs that I had before, it now it doing this weird what I feel to be glitchy thing where every time I want to copy something over (let's say a show I've downloaded) to a folder that already existed, it tells me I need administrator rights. And if I try and just drag and drop a picture from chrome into one of those folders, it tells me I don't have access rights. Desktop? No problem.

Very weird. And in case you're wondering, yes, I did give myself full privileges to the drive using administrator rights (though I'm not sure if it cascades through subfolders?). What's my best bet; should I take everything off, format the drive, and then move it back? Anyone have any ideas what's going on?

I'm having problems booting up sometimes. It seems to occur more often now then it did before.

I let the computer go to sleep/hibernate and then when i turn it back on i get no display. I restart it and still no display, computer beeps once sometimes. and it just wont start so ill try putting the dvi in the 2nd slot of card. (asus engtx 460) and sometimes this works... sometimes ill turn the system off, let it sit, change the dvi port then start it and it will start. also changing from dvi to hdmi made it work.

i dont think its a OS/driver problem since it doesnt display from boot.

mobo is sabertooth x58
ram is some corsair cms or something (budget ram)

Anyone ever painted their fans? It seems relatively easy but perhaps someone who has had experience could chime in?

I bought a CM Turbine Mach 1.8 for my side panel fan mount on my CM Elite 430, for aesthetic purposes really. I plan on somehow cutting out the grille so that the cap on the fan will fit, as well as putting a "jet intake danger" vinyl decal beside it.

Going to paint the fan Rustoleum Dark Steel.

You'd want a full tower case or a server case for 10 hard drives.... Bitfenix Colossus (http://ncix.com/products/?sku=57589&vpn=BFC-CLS-600-KKLB1-RP&manufacture=BitFenix&promoid=1360) - and convert some 5.25 bays into HDD bays.

Or get this - Coolermaster Cosmos (http://ncix.com/products/?sku=67337&vpn=RC-1200-KKN1&manufacture=Others) - 13 3.5 drive bays.

You'd also want a RAID card or SATA card to connect that many hard drives. NCIX - Buy Computers, Computer Parts, Laptops, World's Leading Discount Computer Store (http://ncix.com/products/?sku=53815&vpn=SY-PEX40008&manufacture=Syba&promoid=1513)

unless you need all 10 for streaming or whatever, then you need a bigger case...

I've seen a couple of tutorials on forums and YouTube, seems pretty straightforward just removing the washer and rubber grommets and what not and the fan slides right out. Tape up the centre area of the fan and paint away.

Some guys re-oil the fans, some don't. I guess if you're careful enough and don't let any of the oil flow away, re-oiling is not necessary.

On bios, my cpu temp idles at about 42C and goes up to 52C on windows idle.. motherboard temps seem normal at around 30C.

Can Anyone recommend me a good router?
My router died and I don't have access to the internet anymore at home
(unless I connect my computer to the modem directly)

I don't need anything spectacular, but something mid-tier is good.
I need to hook up 3 PC's and a phone line with it.
Not sure if I need a G or N model...

Budget around $80~??
Less would be better if I don't have to sacrifice too much speed.
But I don't need something with humongous range.
My computers are only like 20 feet apart.

Looking to buy pretty soon, as I need my internet.

Less would be better if I don't have to sacrifice too much speed.
But I don't need something with humongous range.

Nope, they're not. But they're basically in bedrooms beside each other.

Has anyone used "Asus RT N53" ?
I might be considering that one too.

I assumed affecting health and performance is two different things...
Did the poster mean performance or health?

Sometimes I'm too lazy to clean up my desktop full of "junk"
but I don't notice my computer that slow so I don't really care too much.
But if it's going to affect the life of my SSD, I better start cleaning up!

I have that router. It is a pretty good unit but no Gigabit so slower file transfers if you happen to have a NAS and use the wired connection (which I do). See if you can pick up the E4200 refurbished models from NCIX. Great deal around $65: E4200v2 Refurbished (http://ncix.com/products/?sku=78377&promoid=1277)

It does not affect the performance of your SSD unless it is a few specific models - Crucial m4 is affected, and so are the Samsungs, I think. This is due to how the controllers work on those chips. Sandforce drives are fine as well.

As far as I know it does not affect the health of the SSD either. SSD health is mostly based on the life cycle - how many times you have written to the drive. Most people will never see the limit on the drive unless you run the computer as a server and have a crazy amount of IO going....

are they wireless capable or you want wire?
you could go with DLink Wireless N Powerline Router (http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX33112). If you need more coverage, just get the wireless unit and plug it somewhere else in the house... only thing is this unit isnt a gigabit.. unless you dont need it, this might be a good unit..
you can price match it with BestDirect Canada (http://www.bestdirect.ca/products/234276/D_Link/DHP_1320/) @ $37.77

Belaud helped me with the missing screws from the Kuhler 620 I bought at the warehouse sale today :fullofwin: just finished installing it and temps are actually no different from my Hyper 212+ the only difference being I can only use one GT AP-15 on pull and achieve the same temps I did with a push/pull GT AP-15 setup on the Hyper 212+, so slightly quieter.

I bought a Asus RT-56U back in '11 and its been great ive had to reset it a few times (literally a few) over the the last couple years nowhere near the amount i've had to with any other router
signal strength is great throughout the house and i dont even have the router placed in the middle its placed in a far corner
the 5g connection i found is weak at least i thought it was weak when using an ipad or my older laptop
but my new vaio duo 11 is able to get a good 5G connection even in the opposite corner of the house (not max bars but 3-4/5) with my laptop & an ipad i cant even get 1 bar
I would recommend Asus routers now

The Cisco refurb stuff is fine. I've bought quite a few and they work great. Currently running the Cisco Linksys E4200v2 and using the RT-N53 to provide wireless to a corner of the house that has bad signal (so as a signal booster).

Both routers have 4 ports, so that's fine. I have a switch hooked to mine to add more ports because I got a lot of stuff hooked in. I also download a lot, both routers can handle it okay but the Cisco one is a better unit if you have a lot of traffic going on your network. Right now I have 6 laptops hooked up at various times, 2 desktops, 4 smartphones, PS3, a NAS acting as a media server/backup/storage and 2 tablets.

Gigabit Ethernet is the transfer speed of your internal network. Gigabit = 1000Mbps. Regular = 100Mbps. I have a mini server running, which means that I can transfer stuff to and from it faster using Gigabit ethernet. It is better to have Gigabit when streaming 1080p HD videos from a computer to other computers or PS3 etc.

I've been reading up something about DD-WRT. Is that a firmware?

RT-56U seems like overkill for me.
Maybe the E4200 V2 is ok.

I'm still leaning toward the RT-N53 only cause I can pricematch it for $38.
Unless it's complete crap...

My general internet traffic is 1 PC downloading a few GB of stuff every now and then.
I have another 2 PC's that need the router, but they're usually not on (or used often).
I have 1 laptop that my bro uses (for youtube and email).
Things I stream online are pretty much YouTube on a 20" monitor fullscreen (is that even 1080p??).

Will I take advantage of a Gigabit router (or 5G)?
My mobo's a ASUS P8Z77 V-LK. (not sure if my motherboard has anything to do with it)

I'm not sure what NAS, QOS (or any of the other terminology that I've been reading) is,

If that's all that you do, RT-N53 is fine. DD-WRT is custom firmware for messing around with settings, not needed unless you want to get into that. QOS = Quality of Service, basically prioritizing Internet bandwith.

You will not take advantage of Gigabit or 5Ghz, so no need for a super advanced router. Get the N53 and be happy.

I realized for the RT-N53, I was actually looking at the post rebate prices.

Turns out the N600 is only $5 more, and I think it's a gigabit router.
There's way more coverage in terms of reviews, and they were a lot better than the N53.

I need to build a tower for my lil cousin, who is into Skyrim and its mods...

Anyone can suggest the best bang for the buck GPU setup to handle those crazy textures?!?

His Skyrim's texture folder alone is like 17GB... and it only occurred to him to upgrade because he said it's getting really slow. :fuckthatshit:

He didn't specify a budget, but his parents (who's paying the bill) wants the best C/P ratio setup on the market.

Any comments? Ideally I think he needs a card (or maybe dual) that has a lot of ram... but I can't seem to find any card with a lot of ram that's not top-of-line (hence $$$)

No, IMO... it is better for you to get the 7870 Tahiti LE edition rather than a 7850 for best bang for buck. $220, performs close to a 7950 which is closer to $300.

The 7850 has a smaller memory bus which means that the memory performance is not the best. Unless he is gaming at a size larger than 1920x1080 which will use up more memory. The textures load dynamically per area, I think. It's not like he's loading 17GB all at once.

Regular 7870 @ ~$200 is better than 7870 Tahiti LE @ ~$240-250 IMO.

The Tahiti version isn't that much faster, but uses a LOT more power and gets a lot hotter. Plus if you ever do want to consider Crossfire down the road, you might not be able to get it anymore.

2GB is fine for Skyrim + mods at 1080p
but if he plays at higher res or likes to play more intensive game with mods then 2GB actually will run out.

That said a 7850 will be maxed out/bounded before you can even use up 4GB
so if he falls into case #2 i'd suggest 7950 but it's going to be $275-300

Crossfire has been really scrutinized by tech sites recently after a new testing methodology has been developed to quantify microstutters. AMD said they're working up a fix but I would not recommend it at this point.

With that budget I recommend
1. a nice 7970 GHz Ed that can hit a nice OC
2. 670 SLI

That's where you're wrong, and most other non-audiophiles. Source components are so much more important than speakers or headphones.

The same theory applies to upgrading a car. You purchased wider stickier tires but you don't have the power to actually put it to good use. It would make more sense if you increased your power output to actually utilize the upgraded tires.

If you run studio monitors off your built-in motherboard sound, it may not sound "bad," but it's definitely a complete waste. You HAVE to get better source components to take advantage of upgraded speakers/headphones.

worded my stuff wrong
i despise onboard sound, but at the same time i wouldn't spend $200 for a dac alone
i'd just get something like the schiit modi + magni for $200 (both a dac and an amp)
i under stand that a $200 dac may be better, but i can't justify myself paying an extra $100 getting a better dac when i can put that $100 in headphones/speakers or an amp
but hey it's all opinion based and at the end of the day
what im willing to spend and what you're willing to spend is different and what we look for is different too

I'm actually on the market for an external DAC. Don't need an amp as I rarely use my cans/IEMs when I'm on my computer, and when I do, none of them need amping lol.

Was looking at the Modi, but the Audist MX1 looks more attractive, albeit with a $70 premium. A little bummed out that the line out opamp is only a peasantly OPA2134 (okay, I make it sound pretty bad in reality it's not that bad but when compared to stuff like LME49720HA it's pretty bad), and that's the only output I'll be using since I'm connecting them to speakers...

Which leads me to the conclusion I should just get an Essence ST and swap in the LME49720HA opamp I ordered...but damn $200 for a soundcard! A $200 DAC would be better.

so my dad has been complaining that he's only getting 40fps in BF3 on max settings and says he used to get 100fps bla bla bla

and he says he wants another video card to crossfire as a solution, im telling him he doesn't need one (i bought him a 6970 and an i5 rig that you guys helped me build him awhile back)

and given how he uses the computer/internet i naturally assume its filled with trojans, viruses, etc etc

so I wasn't able to get to his place to help clear up his computer

and today he tells me he thinks he solved his problem because he bought 2 7970s, a i7 3770 1000w psu an asus maximus board and some ram etc.... his solution was to go buy a new computer and things he didnt need... -_-

said the guy at ncix told him he wont drop frames with this...

and all im thinking is  :banghead: :fuuuuu: wish he'd leave these things to me

I hate hearing about shit like this :( a huge number of people that have no clue how computers work just buy a new one when all they need to do is clear out some viruses and uninstall some of the startup junk they've accumulated. That's why I've got several "travel" laptops that I don't have much use for that I got from friends after they ignored my advice and bought a new computer just to check facebook and watch cat videos on YouTube.

The same theory applies to upgrading a car. You purchased wider stickier tires but you don't have the power to actually put it to good use. It would make more sense if you increased your power output to actually utilize the upgraded tires.

You kinda fucked up this analogy, you want better tires before making more power so you can actually use the power when you get it. Which would be like upgrading your audio sources to FLAC before you upgrade your hardware so that when you upgrade your hardware it can actually make a difference.

I have a Modi, and I can assure you, you will not be disappointed with the performance it delivers at $99. IIRC, people say the sound is practically indistinguishable from ODAC, but the ODAC is a bit more expensive.

On the other hand, I am not so sure about running head/ear phones straight off the DAC. It just doesn't seem right to me.

I'd say, what are the specs of your current PC? If you can afford to wait a little longer, why don't you wait it out and see how Haswell performs, and see what kind of price cuts the new CPU will result in for the stuff that you can currently buy?

Intel products don't get a price cut even when a new gen is out. Haswell is out in june but a very modest increase in actual compute performance...it'll only be a worthy buy if you overclock or use onboard graphics.

$159.99 shipped to Blaine WA. Cheapest price I could find online, cheaper than some places are offering for their open box units. Should sound godly with my new LME49720HA opamp on my sound card. Can't wait :fullofwin: Though, I will need to pickup speaker stands as nearfield setups need to be ear-level to sound "right"

Kind of debating whether or not I still need an ODAC or I should just stick with my internal sound card setup for now. I guess if I can pickup an ODAC for cheap later on, I will.

On a side note, why the hell are Audioengine's A2 speakers priced so high? They definitely are not worth $200...anything from Fostex or even Behringer beats the living hell out of anything Audioengine makes.

I've heard Audioengines, my friend had A2s and I used to borrow them all the time. They sound great after a very extensive burn-in period of around 200-300 hours, but before that it has an overall very dark (not in the good "audiophile" dark way either) and somewhat veiled sound signature, can be muddy at times as well and not articulate enough. I've listened to the Fostex before at Tom Lee and although they weren't burnt in either, it sure sounded a hell of a lot crisper and clearer in the highs and mid-range (particularly vocals) than the A2s. Maybe it's just me, but I find that Japanese audio companies tend to make their gear produce much brighter sound signatures, not just speakers too, headphones as well including AT, JVC, Sony, etc.

A2s aren't bad, but they're not worth $200. Perhaps if you could find a used set for $150 or less, it'd justify the cost more.

As for actual studio monitors, I'm not doing any recording or actual professional work so I'd prefer not to spend the cost of a pair of almost-studio-monitors on just ONE actual studio monitor, like Yamahas (HS80 sounds godly)

Except NZXT stuff isn't always high quality, take the Sentry 2 for example, they openly admitted using low quality materials which were causing voltage instability and most, if not every fan to click or whine. I have one with this issue so I know firsthand, although it's not too bad for me as my fans don't click or whine, but I do get voltage instability causing fans rpms to fluctuate very audibly. I'm always pretty cautious about buying things from NZXT.

Yeah, there's a bit of a whine coming from the pump, and the fans aren't all that silent. That cooler's probably the loudest thing in my rig, keeping in mind that everything else is cooled by large, low-rpm fans. It's my first "water-cooling" part though, so I don't have anything to compare to.

Don't get too excited unless you haven't upgraded in a while. It will only be about 5% faster than Ivy Bridge (but with lower power consumption). If you have IVB or SB already, there's no need to jump on this one.

Unless you plan on upgrading anyway. In that case it will be worth waiting.

Planned to replace my old E7200 with IB i7 last year, but so many bad reviews are holding me back. I could play most of the games out there at decent quality with my wife's Intel G620 with HD6800, but video editing is slow, so it is about time to upgrade.

- New i7
- 16gb ram
- Next gen video card
- Raid0 Samsung 840pro (just for fun)

Bad reviews of IB i7...?

The SB/IB chips are fairly similar, and they're good processors - I don't get what you mean by bad reviews.

BTW, the GTX780 will be pretty much a GTX680, so don't expect much improvement there - same with the Radeon 8xxx series.

I guess I should not have even tried huh? Should've just said that offer is too good, they aren't going to honor that.
But then again, there are some companies like Razer who recently posted a 90% sale on their UK website by error. They honored a limit of 1 item of each product ordered.

Nothing wrong with trying. Just don't make a big deal about it if they cancel your order. They are well within their rights to do so and I'm sure there's fine print on the website that fully allows them to do so without any obligations.

Exactly. Try if you want to have a chance at ripping off a merchant, but if they don't allow it to happen, don't complain.

There's no point in getting upset about their price error. It written on their website somewhere that if it happens they have the right not to honour it.

I've dealt with TD before regarding a LCD monitor, ONE stuck pixel in the middle of the screen. They paid for shipping return and the refund. I would shop from them again. If you're going to buy something do your homework.

I've been eyeing that 4k LCD tv for about $1500. Hoping to hook it up to the computer but I'm not sure if it supports those resolutions from a computer.

The Haswell we'd buy is about 1.75x the performance, which puts it right around the AMD A10 5800K

99% of Phenom 965BE chips top out at 4.0GHz. Any higher wouldn't really increase performance anyway.

The 965BE runs pretty hot at stock clocks already, and my room is always very warm especially in the summer with ambient temps at around 25-30 degrees.

I don't have any problems running stable at 4.0GHz, but my temps are very dependent on my ambient room temps. On a sunny afternoon I usually idle around 35-40, at night with my window wide open with 4th floor White Rock sea breezes, I idle at around 30-33. Have never done a stress test to check load temps, it's pointless as I will never do anything that will put the CPU at 100% anyway. Playing TERA I get 40 degrees, rarely go over 43. But again, highly dependent on my ambient temps.

Kind of dependent on what fan I have blowing into the rad as well, I found that a rear intake config significantly lowers temps compared to an pull/exhaust setup (as tested by Antec awhile ago, confirmed that rear intake produces lower temps).

Was using a Gentle Typhoon AP-15 before, amazing fan but the bearings eventually get louder to a point where I decided to not use them anymore. Even tried to re-oil the bearings to no avail. Now I'm using a Noctua NF-F12, ultimate silence but it's definitely a downgrade in comparison to the AP-15. Going to get another NF-F12 for a push/pull setup. I spend way too much money on fans. One of these days I'm going to jump ship to Intel and never have to worry about temps again :ilied:

tl;dr closed loop watercooling is not worth the money unless you find a great deal. I bought my Kuhler 620 for $30 which is essentially 50% off, but it's definitely not any better than my old Hyper 212 Plus on push/pull.

So I'm looking for a side panel fan, the R4 supports both 12 and 14mm fans and I'm getting it specifically to shoot air at my GPU, I'd like to stay with Noctua if at all possible, what do you guys think of this: Noctua NF-A15 PWM 140mm Ultra Quiet Cooling Fan 300-1200RPM 115.5M3/H 19.2DBA 4-PIN PWM (http://ncix.com/products/?sku=78188&vpn=NF%2DA15%20PWN&manufacture=Noctua)

That's exactly what I'm doing. I definitely got better temps when I changed to this config. Think about it, you're blowing air from outside the case which supposedly has lower temps onto a hot radiator, instead of exhausting hot air from inside the case onto the radiator and out the back.

Essentially, cold air is entering from outside the case through the back, blowing onto the hot rad, then exhausting out from the top exhaust fan, with another bottom intake fan blowing additional air upwards to help with exhausting.

The only gripe I have is that since my case is cooler, my room gets really hot when I'm gaming :derp:

R4 is pretty loud, A15 is good, but why would you be getting a PWM fan for a case fan application? The A14 would be the one you want, or the P14. A14 = open air applications, P14 = higher pressure for hard drive cages or slightly more enclosed spaces. I use the A14, it's definitely not silent by any stretch, but for the amount of air it pushes, it's pretty darned quiet. My case is completely sound dampened though so it might make a difference.

Hondaracer
05-06-2013, 12:02 PM
A14 ahh icic well mainly I'm using this for cooling while mining litecoins so my video card is whining anyways so not really too concerned with silent, moreso because my case is filled with noctua stuff already and anything else would clash with the color scheme heh :s

A14 managed to lower my GPU temps about 8 deg! Success!

Although with my D14 heatsink I can't close my case completely now, and when I first closed up my case the fan actually pushed my heatsink around and comp wouldn't boot until I moved it back into position :/

May just screw the fan a bit lower into the side case hole

If it helps, perhaps you could use the P14 instead as it uses 120mm mounting holes.

In other news, I picked up another S12A and another A14. Now running two S12As to cool my HDDs and the A14 as a bottom intake. Haven't decided if I want to get a P14 as the pull fan for my Kuhler 620, or wait for the F12 I RMA'd.

So, I just bought two of Noctua's new NF-S12A 120mm fans for intake on my Define R3, the area for HDD cooling. I guess my old case was less restrictive up front because on with the dust filter and HDD cage right after the fans, the S12As can't really blow any air, as they're meant for unrestricted areas with very low static pressure. Need to switch over to P12s instead.

Selling or trading, any takers?
