Y'know, I couldn't find any really spectacular pics of her... but seeing her "live" on TV, she's one of those types, with that kinda smile, that just exudes a certain sexiness... like Kari Byron, you know, just comes across 20 times sexier in motion than in a still shot.

Gotcha. There are definitely some women that look 10x better in person, but they just aren't photogenic.

Team Canada execs have stated that there is a huge difference between playing on NHL-sized ice (size > speed) vs international size ice (speed > size). Therefore, you can't make a fair comparison between the 2010 team and the 2014 team.

Just a heads up to everyone, Canada has never done well on International Ice. our only Olympic golds came at Vancouver and Salt Lake City.

The Team Canada brass was well aware of the differences between NHL & international ice. It was such a big issue that they hired Ralph Krueger and his only job was to essentially scout ALL the European teams, their plays, habits, and skills.

Here is a great read about Team Canada's hiring of Ralph Krueger

Krueger Canada's secret weapon - Winnipeg Free Press (http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/sports/olympics/print/Krueger-is-Canadas-secret-weapon-244640951.html)

SOCHI, Russia — Team Canada head coach Mike Babcock employed Ralph Krueger as a spy this season, a James Bond of hockey, if you will, and now he’s hoping he can deliver From Russia with Love.

Krueger has been Canada’s secret agent this winter, tramping his way around Europe the last six months watching the coaches of every team but the U.S. and Canada go through their daily paces.

Krueger is now a double-agent. He coached Switzerland at the 2006 Olympics in Turin and put his name on the international hockey map with a win over Canada. That knowledge, how the Canadians were made vulnerable by the international game en route to a humiliating seventh-place finish, is what makes Krueger invaluable to Babcock and why the Edmonton Oilers loss was Team Canada’s gain.

Krueger had little time last summer to process the fact the Edmonton Oilers had just fired him. Because the phone rang again and it was Babcock on the other end offering the Winnipeg-born and Steinbach-raised Krueger a position on his staff.
"I’ve been telling people for 25 years that when you can’t change something in life, find a positive process, and solutions, things that move you forward. I remember sitting on my daughter’s bed at home in Switzerland, and my wife Glenda was in shock. She was screaming and yelling," tells Krueger, watching Norway practice here in Sochi.

"I quickly said, 'Can I change anything?' This is a done deal. (Oilers GM Craig MacTavish) told me he had an option (which was to hire Dallas Eakins). The first thing that came to my mind was, ‘I don’t need to understand this. It’s a waste of my time, my life, of analysis. I’m not going to talk negative about anybody. Let’s go.’

"I swear, it was three hours after they announced it in Canada, Babcock phoned me. Three hours. So I threw myself into this. Mike got my number from Tom Renney. Three hours. My wife said ‘You already accepted another job?’ She thought I was nuts."

Krueger needed to have an understanding of Babcock’s process and the head coach wanted to pick the brain of his tactician. Then began the work.

Every power play, every penalty kill, every zone defence and every breakout to be used in this Olympic hockey tournament, Krueger has seen it, documented it, and will now pass it on to Team Canada.

Krueger might not bang home the winning goal two weeks from now in the gold-medal game, but if Canada is in that position, his work will have played a major influence. He’s been Canada’s pro scout and tactical advisor.

"So I had threefold responsibilities, one was the tactical preparation of the team. We set the tactical foundation and I have been monitoring that now through the season, how it’s going to apply to the big ice. The second track has been the preparation of the 11 opponents. We’ve got a full profile on everybody and we’ve got video footage to match their tactical approaches. All the coaches are full time, except for the U.S and Canada, so it’s easier to monitor the trends.

"The third thing is, as part of the management’s coaching team, having the opportunity of being a part of the evaluation process of the players. So that was a lot of fun."

There’s been lots of talk about systems and the big ice playing a role in the outcome of this tournament. In Vancouver, on NHL-sized ice, Canada and the U.S. dictated the style of play and collided in the gold medal game. Here, on an international-sized surface, which is wider with a longer neutral zone and two extra feet behind the nets, the style of play could favour the European-based teams.

Krueger, who grew up in Steinbach in the house of his father Karl-Hugo and mother Eva before boarding at St. John’s Ravenscourt School, spent close to 20 years playing and coaching in Europe before taking a job with the Oilers.
More than anyone on the Team Canada staff, he understands the way the international game is played.

"In Europe, it’s critical how teams approach the neutral zone, which is eight feet longer blue line to blue line. How do they approach that neutral zone? How do they play defensively when they lose possession of the puck, and how can you break that?" said Krueger.

"Of course the clear tactics of PP, penalty kill strategy. It’s not copy-paste like many NHL environments. I can look at all 30 NHL teams and so much is repetitive strategic approach. Within this tournament, in six games in 11 days, you could see complete, wide-open variety of strategies. So strategic shifts day-to-day are the most difficult thing for the NHL players. They’re used to seeing a similar animal coming at them every night, and it’s something we’re trying to figure out the key points because we don’t want to over load them as the strategies are changing."

Krueger maintains a summer home in Kenora, and he and Glenda, the daughter of Westwood’s Earl and Hope Gibbons, have been spending their summers together ever since they met on the beach at Star Lake in 1981.
His father sent him to Ravenscourt for a book education, but Ralph had other ideas.

"I was nine years old and one of the only boarders my age. I was supposed to be there to go to school, but I spent all day and all night in the Dutton Memorial rink skating and shooting pucks.

"SJR has a lot to do with who I am today and what I became today and the leadership responsibilities that I’m taking on," says Krueger, tall and fit and bristling with positivity. "My Dad helped build the hospital in Steinbach. He was a doctor… He went to Steinbach (from Germany) in the 50s, and they didn’t have a proper hospital. He was one of the founders. He left his legacy there in Steinbach."

Krueger may have spent the last half-year developing a strategic book on how to beat the European nations, but at the end of the day, he says Canada must be Canada.

"The most important thing is that we play the game where we are the best in the world and that’s between the dots," said Krueger. "Everyone is talking about that ice, and I’m talking about not playing there. And that’s probably the biggest input I’m bringing to the team, how can we not play on that extra ice?

"What happens is, if you play in the extra ice, it slows your game down. That’s why sometime you watch a European game it seems slower and that’s because of the extra space. Players handle the puck longer, they move it with less tempo and authority and that slows the game down. Whereas if you bring it in between the dots, it’s the same game. So let’s get there and forget this width and let’s play. The north, south is exactly the same distance."

Babcock will do the coaching and Sidney Crosby et al will do the the playing and in the end they’ll get the glory if Canada wins.

But behind every battle is a plan and somewhere in all the documents and diagrams Krueger has compiled is an edge that could give Canada’s hockey spy a new name: GoldenEye.

Wow, it just dawned upon me that for the past few months, Babcock has been working TWO full time jobs at the same time:

1) Prepare his NHL team
2) Prepare his Olympic team (no pay!)

There aren't enough hours in a day to do that! Maybe that's why Detroit is clinging to the final playoff spot. :troll:

I think he's got some of the best masks out there, so I guess to each his own. I love that semi-gloss finish. And you can't go wrong with Johnny Canuck and variations of him (lumberjack).

The Smith one to me looks amateur. Price's is just ok for me. Not a huge fan of the flaming/feathery leaf.

If we get lit up by Norway I'd be less worried about the goaltending and more worried about our team as a whole.

It seems like anyone's position for the taking, whoever looks more impressive their game gets the start

Is it wrong to cheer for Norway so they light up Price so Luongo gets to be the go to guy?

Or maybe this is like 2010 where Brodeur got the start, but when Luongo came in, he stole the show.

I was cheering against Bro more than I was cheering for Canada in 2010 lol

Gold medals, silver medals, all medals, it doesn’t matter how you count it up, the Canadians – with just 30 million people – are eating our lunch (probably a chicken noodle soup and a grilled panini from Tim Hortons). Then to quench their thirst they are going to that sweet beer fridge they brought over that only opens if you have a Canadian passport.

Yeah, Canada is cool. The U.S. is not, at least not yet. There’s time and more events and hockey and all of that, but thus far, the Canadians are on a roll, extending their hot streak from the Vancouver Games and winning and winning and winning.

Well, this Own the Podium thing keeps going and going, as relentless and annoying as Justin Bieber. Own the Podium? Look Canada, North America isn’t big enough for two egomaniacal, boastful countries that claim ownership over communal property. Stop stealing our act.

IMO only Gold medals should count, its still really early into the games and most countries up top not far apart each other in Golds. No competitive athlete sets out to be the second or third best. Ask the Broncos how they felt being second best or the Canucks in 2011 how it felt only winning the Presidents Trophy and West title.

On another note, anyone else liking team Canada mens hockey over 5.5 goals vs Norway and Russia/Slovenia game over 6.5? Looks solid to me. Hit on Sweden and Switzerland regulation win today.

^As commercialized as the Olympics are, it goes against the "spirit of the games" if they were to only count Golds. Yes you're right- elite athletes generally only go there to win. But there's a large contingent of athletes who are there to just soak the atmosphere in. The medals are there for incentive, but it's hardly the only reason that athletes train to go to the Olympics (the sex (http://espn.go.com/olympics/summer/2012/story/_/id/8133052/athletes-spill-details-dirty-secrets-olympic-village-espn-magazine) all around them!)

Given the North America teams using these games to adjust to the big ice, getting 6 goals over a European team might be difficult. Unless that's 6 goals total, it's a tricky bet that I'd only take if the odds were good enough.

What are people's thoughts about the cauldron being lit up? 200 grand to light up a cauldron is a pretty big chunk of taxpayer dollars. Yeah, no kidding some corporate sponsorship would help lower the tax burden on people.

You can show the Olympic spirit at a fraction of the cost:

Interesting fact/comment in regards to the cauldron:

Mike Stewart · Vancouver, British Columbia
According to BC Pavilion Corp., 98.9 gigajoules of gas lit the torch for 13 hours on Canada Day in 2010.

Assuming the flow of gas stays constant - 98.9GJ / 13hrs is 7.6 GJ burned/hr.

There are roughly 270 hours of Olympics remaining, or, 2,052GJ.

2,052GJ x $3.272 (current rate of gas via FortisBC) is $6,714. Even if the cost was 10x to keep it lit in the winter - and two times longer to include the Paralympics - we're still shy of $125,000.

My opinion only, of course, but I fail to see the point in lighting up the cauldron for games that are happening on the other side of the planet. I hope it's paid for by the private sector. I guess our taxes could go toward dumber things, but.

If it is paid for by tax dollars, that means somewhere a program gets cut or a service reduced. Priorities are screwed up a bit. Who are we trying to impress again?

I keep wanting to reach thru the TV and wipe all the bird shit off all the Canadian shoulders.

As for the slow start, I bet you the coaches just told everyone to go out and play hockey, so they can get a feel for how the big ice is and how they play together, and the coaches can make adjustments going forward. You don't need a super tight fame to beat Norway, so maybe they are using it as more practice. You can sort of see this from the line juggling, and the change in play from 1st to the 2nd

Canada's got one more game to gel.
and a tougher opponent at best.

As i predicted, Crosby doesn't do anything, but will when it matters

I can see Tavares being a very key part of this team and I expect him to see him moving to the wing with Sid and Kuntiz sooner rather than later

It still boggles my mind that we left Giroux, Thornton, Eric Staal, James Neal, etc. at home to take Kunitz and Carter (who get gifted top line minutes with Crosby to boot).

We couldn't score against any team that played decent D in 2010 and we decide to take even fewer offensively gifted players this time :fulloffuck:

The adjustment to big ice must be real.

Seriously though- did you notice how many times 2 Canadian players bumped into each other? Or while cycling/in the offensive zone were within a stick-length from each other. That's likely due to them not aware of how much ice is actually around them.

Don't forget that the European players grew up playing on the large ice. For those who only recently started their NHL careers, they still have spent more time on the large ice surface than NA sized ice.

Meanwhile, Canadian players have little or no experience on international ice surfaces.

It's really apparent watching the Euro teams. They're almost in the perfect spots to receive passes and not be harassed. Canada seemed too eager to engage players on the boards today. I expect that to differ tomorrow against a stronger Austrian team (Grabner hat-trick?!?!)

I also noticed that when Canada was cycling the puck along the boards in the corner, they didnt put enough mustard on the pass, say, to make it around the boards behind the net to the other player. They didn't realize how spread out they ended up.

There are some international-sized ice rinks in the CHL, which is where most Team Canada players are from.

Belleville, for example, has a 200x100 foot ice surface, which is larger than IIHF specifications (60.5x29.5 meters or 198x97 feet). Niagara has an ice surface that is actually smaller than an NHL-regulation ice surface.

Doesn't matter. St.Louis and Duchene can easily fill the void. If anything. A guy like Marty can make players around him much better.

For whatever reason. Babcock and HC have a Hardon for Carter.

I can't see Kunitz not producing with Sid. He's been producing for over 2 years playing with him. It's Jeff Carter that I'm worried about. I would've honestly taken James Neal over him for the simple fact that you could slot all 3 Pens players together.

Edit: Given the amount of time Kunitz is getting, he's gotta get out of the lineup. In a short tournament, he's staying pretty invisible (other than a nice cross-ice feed last game).

Duchene is looking REALLY good on that Anaheim line.
