Soundy, do you remember the parade held in Vancouver for Nancy Greene?

My god, she was an awesome athlete, winning gold in the giant slalom by a margin of 2.68 seconds. A margin so big, it took score keepers a while to display the time. One of the most decisive wins in Olympic history.

Sorry, guys.... old timers talk. LOL.

What Noora Räty?s Retirement Says About Women?s Hockey | The Pink Puck (http://thepinkpuck.com/2014/02/16/what-noora-ratys-retirement-says-about-womens-hockey/)

Pretty good article. It helped create awareness that these female athletes can't go on forever regardless how good, because they can't make money playing the sport.

And I feel bad for the women, not just Noora Raty, but all of them who have the talent to play competitively (among women), but there's just no money in an all-female competitive hockey scenario. There's issue with them being in the NHL, issues with being in a lower co-ed league, and issues with creating revenue in an all-female league.

The part that I have a problem with in the article is where the writer thinks females can simply get into the NHL with some exposure and opportunity. Female talent is underrated, but also very overrated if being in the NHL is the goal. (Note that Noora Raty never said this herself.) I don't watch anything other than NHL (any Olympic hockey), so I don't have the statistics, but based on the comments following the article, seems like top caliber Women National teams were on par with Men's college teams...

Because of the different body structure and size difference between the two genders, a co-ed league would be way too physically demanding for females. Too small to take hits as a skater, too small to cover the net as a goalie. The females would need to be 2 tiers better than their male counterparts just to keep up. Really just a dumb idea all around. And lower leagues don't generate much money anyway.

For an all-female league, I'm not sure who would really follow that. Maybe some young girls who dream of becoming in "X" female league can now have a hockey player to look up to, but I don't think any guys would care about it. Not when it's lower level hockey compared to NHL. And just because it's female hockey, it won't necessarily mean females will flock to watch it. People generally still want to watch the highest level of competitive sport, hence the NHL. So a female league will still have trouble getting support regardless of how much exposure they have.

It really sucks that at the end of the day, these talented female players have no where to go... but that's just the way it is... generally, people don't want to pay to watch lower level sports.

What about as coached or support players?
While the female may not have the physical ability to keep up with their male counterparts, they could understand the game well enough to be effective coaches, trainers, general managers etc.

For fitness training, I see no problem with that. There's a good trainer for goalies named Maria Mountain that posts her videos on YouTube.

But as a coach, I would not expect a woman, who's highest level of hockey exposure was from a woman's league, to understand the NHL game. While there are coaches that didn't even play in NHL, or had many games under their belt, it was still men's hockey they played, with hitting and much more physical aspect to it. Completely different from a women's type of game.

But aside from all this, I think the original problem is still there, which is that the women don't get to play due to lack of financial support. They are basically being forced to retire, and doing the "admin" work to stick around the game is a weak alternative from their desire to be the athlete.

m3thods

^We're barely over having women as Forbes-list CEOs. Good luck having women in a men's professional team setting. I'd like to think that teams like the Canucks are progressive enough to accept it (Hamhuis and Booth is already being coached by a woman for his skating). But I doubt most teams in the US would listen to a woman about hockey.

Let's not forget the sexism that women reporters still get. Remember the fallout from Duncan Keith disparaging Karen Thomson of the Team1040 earlier this season (I believe) when she asked about his apparently beef with D. Sedin?

It won't happen for a long time. Professional athletes already have trouble listening to men coaches. It'll be even harder for said athletes to take women coaches in their sport seriously.

This, we all saw what happened over the weekend when the first female football player played with men. She just got destroyed and rocked, to her credit though, she got up, but she was just not effective.

» Video: First Female Professional Football Running Back Makes History, Gets Obliterated Barstool Sports: Philly (http://philly.barstoolsports.com/around-barstool/video-first-female-professional-football-running-back-makes-history-gets-obliterated/)

I think everyone can agree that female leagues don't work as frankly no one gives a shit, leading to low revenues, sponsorship support,etc... they'll just have to stick to the Olympics, which in my opinion is a bit of farce anyways because they reward losing in the form of silver and bronze medals and include "sports" whos outcomes are the result of subjective judging. I know I'm in the minority feeling that way about the Olympics, oh well. To me Olympics stopped being about the Olympic spirit a long time ago as professionals are allowed to compete in various sports in the Olympics, when you are a pro, the only result that should be rewarded is gold and winning, yup my view is pretty harsh.

Dude said it best. She was born without the Y chromozone. As a goalie, if she is indeed that good, she may make it in the NHL.

Let's face it, it is still a man's world. A woman has to overcome a lot of obstacles. Is it fair? No. But that's the way the cookie crumbles.

I look at my mom, my sister, my daughter, and my wife and life for them is not fair.

Not much more can be said on the topic that hasn't been said before. So sad this athlete has to face that reality.

I love that Visa commercial where they quote Amelia Earhart, then chick says, "Now we get to fly." something like that.............

It's sad, really - some of the best hockey I've ever seen at Rogers (or GM Place, at the time) was when the All-Star Game was here and we went to the US and Canadian women's game. Man, shit was getting VICIOUS out there - fighting wasn't allowed, but there were plenty of times, you know they REALLY wanted to go.

Not if you're looking at previous Olympics. If you take his particular sport, for example, you can name the source as being Browning and Stojko, both of which were multiple world-champions at the time of their respective Olympic games.

It wasn't until 2010 where Canada really shed the choking image in a big way. And even then, you could throw Del Bosco and Hollingsworth and the meltdown in curling belonging to Cheryl Bernard. We should've had 17 gold medals!

Choking in the olympics runs in our country. We just need to embrace it :toot:

It has gone on forever. Even in Vancouver, even tho we did so well with the Golds, in the first week of the games, it seemed like every event the Canadians who were the favorites were "soo close except for that missed step" and ended up 4th or 5th.

Canadians all over the last two winter Olympics have been the favorites and world cup champions leading into the games, and fallen short once in the games. and not just being beat, but actually losing it themselves. Look at the skiers, and charles hamelin for example. And ya, look at Patrick Chan, that was hard to watch.

Now, that being said. Full props and support to all the Canadian athletes. Simply making it to the olympics is absolutely fantastic

Erik Guay. 5th in downhill.
Erik Guay. 5th in super G

Pierre Leuders. 5th in 2 man bobsled
Pierre Leuders. 5th in 4 man bobsled

4 athletes finished either 4th or 5th in Moguls or Aerials

3 athletes finished 4th to 6th in Ski Cross

Patrick Chan finished 5th in Figure Skating

Olivier Jean, Charles Hamelin, and Francois Hamelin, had 3 4th or 5th finishes between them

Melissa Hollingsworth finished 4th in Skeleton

Jeremy Wotherspoon absolutely imploded in speed skating

The 3 Canadian speed skaters who won medals, also had 4 4th-6th finishes

That is about 20 'almosts' for athletes who were supposed to make the podium but couldn't get it done at the olympics. It's one thing to rise up, put on the run of your life, and finish 5th when you weren't supposed to finish that strong, but this is athletes not living up to where they should have been

As one of the favourites coming into Sochi, he was (not to take anything away from the awesome Joannie Rochette tweet) given the gold medal to take, but alas he pulled a Browning/Stojko/pick your choking Canadian athlete of the day.

Don't want to say the "C" word, but they might actually not _ _oke and finish on the podium. Let's hope.

Do our Canadian techs not know what they are doing?

Do the Dutch win all the time in long track speed skating because they know how to sharpen blades? Our athletes are pretty good and they train hard. It seems we have technical problems - wrong wax, poor skate sharpening, etc. When races are won in thousandths of a second, I believe the equipment plays a large part - last piece of the puzzle, IMHO.

Olympic Skier from Colorado Loses It When He Sees His Score Is 4.20 (http://www.brobible.com/sports/article/skier-olympics-420-score/)

http://images.brobible.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/20221109/4.20.jpg

19-year-old skier Lyman Currier hails from the stoner capital of Boulder, Colorado. He had a real bummer of a day in the half-pipe on Tuesday, taking a scary fall on his second run and screaming in pain. Recovering from an ACL injury in 2012, he cried from the injury and telling his dad that “it popped.”

But hey, how about a moment of levity? On one run, he scored a 4.20 and — like anyone who hears that magical number combination — he decided to laugh.

Oh Colorado.

Looks like Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse will be carrying the Canadian flag for the closing ceremony.
Sochi 2014 - CBC Sports - Kaillie Humphries, Heather Moyse named Canada's flag-bearers (http://olympics.cbc.ca/news/article/kaillie-humphries-heather-moyse-named-canada-flag-bearers.html)

Speaking of which, anyone know if the closing ceremony will be streamed online through cbc?

More importantly, we won both hockey golds. :D

Well a win for both Men's and Women's hockey, and we have more golds than the USA. I'd consider this Olympics a decent success. We had a lot of choking and a heck of a lot of silvers and 4th place finishes but it was overall pretty good.

Sort of like when Donovan Bailey won the 100M in Atlanta. Then some light bulb at NBC took Donovan's time, doubled it, and found it was slower than Michael Johnson's 200M time. Their conclusion was that Johnson should be billed as the "World's Fastest Man". This despite that at previous Olympics it's always been the 100M winner that gets this unofficial title.

THIS! Really happy to see the hosting city/country make those two achievements, especially after being shut out of a medal in hockey. Mens and womens hockey and curling were big ones for Canada so it was great to see us take all 4 golds. Super stoked for McMorris taking bronze. That dudes awesome! Snowboard cross was probably the most exciting event with all the speed and crashes. All in all I had a great time watching and following all of the events.

I would've preferred, in this order:

1. Jennifer Jones for her complete domination of the curling tournament

2. Marie-Philip Poulin for the most epic in win all the games

3. Happy Gilmore Junio for giving up his spot on the team for his teammate, who he felt had a better chance of getting a medal - representing true sacrifice and sportsmanship, for the benefit of his team

Only reason I don't (read: can't) suggest anyone from mens hockey, is cause it was a total team effort and to choose 1 player to carry the flag, would be unjust.

this deserves to be here instead of the Hockey thread

but the IOC is a joke for how it handled this. To shed some light, Lubo Visnovsky went through similar events, however, he was notified within the 48hrs and was able to be retested.

IIHF, NHLPA, NHL and all of Sweden are angry. As a hockey fan, would have love to see Sweden be able to ice an actual centre. Absolutely certain with at least one guy, the play up ice at times would be slightly different

No shit - I mean, it's not like nobody has ever had this happen before EXACTLY THE SAME WAY. Everyone should be well aware of what off-the-shelf products can create a false positive, and have no excuse not to avoid them.

Also if you look at their guidelines (http://www.wada-ama.org/Documents/World_Anti-Doping_Program/WADP-Prohibited-list/WADA_Additional_Info_Pseudoephedrine_2010_EN.pdf) posted 5 years ago, they clearly state what kind of dosage is considered "therapeutic" and which are "supra-therapeutic" (ie you are using it for something other than allergies)

The threshold level has been established based on the intake of therapeutic doses of PSE, defined as a maximum daily dose of 240mg PSE

That gets you over 150 ug/ml, if you take it within 24 hours of competing. He had 190 ug/ml, so presumably he took more than 240mg

Im sad as well. I absolutely love the Olympics but the way I felt during the Vancouver games changed the way I feel about them going forward, including Sochi now.

You get emotionally connected to the whole thing. 2 weeks of cheering your home country on, cheering the athletes ups, and feeling for them on their downs. Every morning, turning the TV on to see whats going on, and watching the primetime recap in the evening. These olympics I really got into following the games on my phone on the Sochi app as well. It seems so long ago we watched Mcrib bring the first medal home, and then Chloe and Justine's incredible runs. And to finish it off with Canada gold in Hockey. So many good memories.

And then, after 2 weeks, its over.

Just like Vancouver, there were some negatives leading into Sochi, but after a day or 2 of the games, no one mentioned them anymore and the games were a very positive and successful run.

It is incredible that there is such an enormous lead up for the 8+ years leading up to the games, an astronomical amount of money, and it comes and goes in such a short time. And now we wait another 4 years (or 2 if you're into the summer games as well) for next time.

Agreed with you two gents. So much feels, especially when that creepy bear blew out the torch and shed a creepy tear :heckno:

I didn't think I would get so involved with the whole Olympic action since I'm not a big sports fan. However, all it took was a single watch of one of the events on the first few days and I was hooked on the entire two and a half weeks. I've probably watched more sports in the last two weeks than I have in the past year. It has definitely been an exciting two weeks, sad to see it go just like that.

One of the really amazing things about these games, they give the world a TRUE glimpse into other cultures that we normally wouldn't get. Leading up to it, all we saw was the sensationalistic crap from certain media outlets who are more interested in their ratings points, and self-styled activists with a point to make who wanted to make various governments or establishments look bad and to hell with the hard-working everyday folk who are putting all the work into making things happen...

And then when it all gets rolling, we get to see those people who have no sociopolitical axes to grind, who just love their country and their hometown, who are excited to greet visitors and help them feel welcomed, to show off what they think is so great about their land and their heritage, who have given up weeks of their regular pay for the once-in-a-lifetime experience volunteering and performing.

That was the case here, and that was the case in Sochi, and hey, again, fuck the other biased media, and full props to both NBC and CBC for great, balanced, thorough, REAL coverage.

EDIT:
