Anyone used the shop Vac at Costco for around $90 for vacuuming the interior of their car? Is it solid?

I got that yellow Costco shop vac for around ~$60 when it was on sale.

I think it works well enough as a car vacuum although the hose that comes with it is a bit short and and rigid. I don't use the wiry brush attachment that it comes with though. I got a much softer horse-hair brush attachment from my parent's recently broken vacuum.

But if you're going to end up buying a longer more flexible hose and other attachments, you might as well just shell out the extra for the home depot vacuum: https://www.homedepot.ca/product/ridgid-nxt-53l-14-gal-6-0-peak-hp-wet-dry-shop-vacuum-with-auto-detailing-kit/1001389636?rrec=true

I got the same one - it's a DeWalt right? It's alright for the car but I find the attachments a bit too bulky so I can't get into small spots like between the seat and the centre console. I have an old tiny Armor All shop vac as well that I was going to toss once I got the DeWalt but I'm gonna keep it since it can get into small spaces.

I have the actual shop vac brand (Canadian Tire).

I use the stiff bristle brush for the carpet (Find this works way better than just the normal floor/utility nozzle)

https://media-www.canadiantire.ca/product/fixing/tools/wet-dry-vacuums/0540084/dust-brush-1-25--b4914eb0-87cd-4603-8d2c-b1d532fe9160.png?imwidth=1024

And then use these for dash, soft plastics/fabrics and hard to reach parts

If anyone is looking for air conditioners, I heard the Willingdon location might have some this morning. They’ll be gone before the doors open. Line up and get vouchers I think is how they’re doing it. Phone ahead, in case.

Update: They have them.

Last month, my son bought the Philips One Blade shaver from Costco. I asked him if it was good. He didn't go into any detail, so when they went on sale last week, I purchased it. Tried it out today. It is surprisingly good. I need it to shave my arm pits and below the belt. I've been using a razor and I've always had problems with burns and tiny cuts. I use shaving cream and whatnot, but not fun. This One Blade does a really good job. No pulling of hairs. Didn't matter how long the hairs were. No shaving cream needed. The kit comes with three blades. and three trim pieces for cutting length, and, guards for body hair removal. The blades are supposed to last for three to four months. Plenty of good reviews. I didn't realize how much hair I have. Anyway, with it being on sale, you can't lose.

Rainy/Misty evening I limped the SC430 with a dead battery (thanks for not driving it IN-LAW DAD!!!) to costco without dying. Thank god the alternator is so stout on the SC.

Wrenching in the parking lot to replace AGM while wacko old men pop out of the woodworks to come inquire about the SC. Got my warranty honored, full refund and core charge, and got some new Michelin wipers for the SC while i was there.

I wanted a TLDW, but I watched it anyway at 2x speed

1. Items ending in $0.99 is regular price
Items ending in $0.97 is clearance priced
Items ending in $0.88 is clearance price for the specific store/area
Items ending in $0.00 is a manager markdown to clear out space for new seasonal merch.

2. Samples are to entice shoppers to buy the thing at full price

3. Pharmacy is open to non-members

4. A member can buy you a Costco Shop Card so you can see if a Costco membership is right for you

5. “Warehouse Days” give you greater savings on top of regular sales prices

6. Costco Coupons are very valuable. You can ask customer service for coupons before you buy the item

7. The best deals are generally deep in the middle of the store. Entrance and end caps are more expensive.

8. If an item is $0.97 (Clearance priced) has an asterisk on top right of the price tag means the product will be discontinued. It might be temporary because they are negotiating with the manufacturer and the negotiations are not going well for Costco so they will bring in a competitors product instead. However, further negotiations might bring back the original manufacturer’s product later.

9. Kirkland Signature is high quality and is comparable to big name brands

10. Candy pricing goes through a weird clearance pricing phase about 2 months before a major holiday. Possibly to clear out old inventory to make room for new seasonal candy. E.g. Halloween or Christmas theme candy.

What do people use iPads for? I feel like they are for the 65+ crowd who don’t want to use a computer but need a web browser when they need to look up a capital city or a recipe lol

Almost anything that I’m inputting data in, or need to add attachments, I’ll use a computer. Anything else can be done on my phone. iPad is kind of this dead zone for me in terms of use

Considering the 9th gen ipad is basically the same as the 10th gen, youre not losing out much but saving like 200+ dollars. Best deal ive ever seen

It's perfect for kids - my 4 year old (and her cousins) all have iPads and could spend the entire day on them watching videos, playing games etc. My kid has learned a lot from using it. Managing her screen time has become essential.

I'm hearing impaired and the iPad supports routing audio calls straight into my hearing aids so it makes taking work calls way easier. Can't do that on my MacBook.

And like you say, it works great for the elderly. My mom loves looking at pictures of the grandkids on it (beats going to her desktop to do it and easier too) and she mostly consumes content anyways.

For my personal use it'd handy when I'm just consuming and voice recognition is getting so good that one can mostly avoid having to type if they don't want to. I don't use it much for that purpose but it's handy.

The first iPad I bought was when I went on that 4-1/2 week cross continent road trip. I purchased it from Costco in that state that had no sales tax. I used it to take footage of Times Square. People were amazed at it. I was a bit of a celebrity. Not many people had them then, I guess. I took footage of ground zero, TO from the tower, Parliament Buildings light show, and sent it in real time to my wife who couldn't be there. It was great for that. Now it's at home being charged and collecting dust. Oh, took footage of the total eclipse with it when down in Oregon.

My iPhone is with me 24/7. iPads, all three of them, not so much. Nothing like a MacBook Pro for everything else.

BTW, my MacBook Pro is a mid 2014 model with quad core i7 with a 1TB SSD. I use it daily. Still going strong. In fact, between my two sons and myself, we have seven MacBooks. Three used daily and the rest not. The rest of the laptops still work. With battery issues. Oldest one is a 17 inch MacBook Pro from 2012 that still works. Damn. Apple made some great laptops (not sure about recent models). The battery on my current MacBook Pro is swelling up a bit. I was told by an Apple Tech not to dump it. Just replace battery. The laptop still has value. My eldest son uses PC laptops for work and their lifespan is like two to three years. Five tops.

When my current laptop kicks the bucket, I'll buy another one................. in a heartbeat.

I back up my laptop via Time Machine on a weekly basis and sync with my iPhone all the real important stuff.

I'm such an Apple fan boi. Been with them from the beginning.

Apple IIe, Mac Plus, Mac Classic, just about every freaking model they ever made. original iMac, Lisa, Performa series, you name it. I volunteered setting up Mac labs in schools. I was, at one time, a network specialist. Did shit that even Apple techs couldn't accomplish. Set up the first Xserve network. I believe first one ever in Western Canada. Anyway, it's all a blur now, gulolol.

I remember the days when Apple was not popular and trashed by the PC crowd. I'm glad things turned around. Now, it's not bad being an Apple fan boi. god, I love my HomePod mini's, hee hee. It even tells decent dad jokes.

I find with Apple it's like German cars. They are engineered to extremely tight tolerances and the engineering is incredible, some ppl swear by them and some ppl have had nothing but problems.

I'm not an Apple user, but I am on my 5th MBP because of work, the first 3 all had some degree of issues. Nothing that strands me but mostly software issues. Let's see if I have a good one with the latest one.

I find tablets easier to use than laptops. Don’t need a keyboard and if I do, I’ll just use the folio keyboard. I load up outlook, ms teams and basically just work out of this thin tablet. if I need to use excel, tablet excel works enough. Just not good at making pivot tables.

This.

If you're running around all day from meeting to meeting, having an iPad or tablet to load up your Microsoft apps like Outlook and Teams is game changing. Granted, I use a Microsoft Surface Pro 6, so not exactly the same thing.

I envy my colleagues who splurged on an iPad Pro. I don't think I could ever do that.

I started using Macs in 2018 which is after the whole butterfly keyboard thing kicked off. Surprisingly I've had no issues with the keyboard, probably cause the machine sat on a desk 99% of the time and I used an external keyboard.

What I had were mainly software issues and a bunch of small bugs. My coworkers had varying degrees of screen hardware issues, CPU/GPU issues. These were Intel Inside.
That lead into the touchbar Intel MBP where it would go afterburner and attempt to VTOL for no reasons.
The next one was a M1 13" MBP where the fingerprint sensor was a little wonky.
I have two MBP right now, an old touchbar 14" and a brand new M2 MBP. Neither of these seem to have any problems right now but I'll see, it's only been 2 weeks.

We just have a simple Galaxy Tab which lives on the Kitchen counter, and use mostly for TV/music while cooking, looking up recipes, things of that nature.

Only bought the Galaxy Tab because all the video apps on the old Ipad 4 suddenly stopped working (Shaw Bluecurve, Youtube) or were unsupported (Disney +).
Pissed me off because it did the job of playing videos just fine until one day we get a screen out of the blue "This app is no longer supported by the OS, update your OS" and then "This device does not support a newer OS". Fuck you apple.

I mean, that's the same with an older Android tablet. Past a certain age the new OS can't be updated onto the tablet, apps are no longer programmed to work on that OS, etc.

Just wait until the Android tablet does that to you too.

It's just streaming video, how complicated is it that coding for it so massively fundamentally changes between OS's that it can't be written to keep working on the old version of the App?

Some older versions still work, Netflix still works (worked, until I cancelled it) on the pad.

I mean shit, I can fire up an old Windows XP box and still install the latest version of WinVLC to watch videos.

Their organic ground beef, basically all veggies, avocados while expensive are still the best deal doing price Vs quality imo. The chicken wings, turkey pepperoni when on sale, the Kirkland blocks of cheese again probably best quality Vs price going.

Mixed nuts, the salt and pepper mills, seasonings, better than bouillon, the tortilla “strips” they have now are amazing. Then cereals, Vector and Mini wheats again best deal going.

Basically anything you can keep, or you eat enough of to eat before it goes bad, there isn’t a better deal on imo.

For Kirkland brands, TP, PT, Laundry pods, coffee k-cups n seaweed snacks are always on my list. Extra virgin olive oil, grape seed oil, balsamic vinegar too but don’t expect top quality/flavour. Still good for day to day cooking for most.

Non-Kirkland musts are Steinfeld pickles (the best out there IMO), tonkatsu ramen bowls, bread, huge wedges of Parmesan cheese, 4 packs of bacon, born 3 eggs, avocados, cucumbers, asparagus and soy sauce. Other necessities such as mouthwash, toothpaste, Q-tips, contact solution etc. are good buys there.

Buy meat in bulk and portion it at home. That said, pound for pound, better deals can be found elsewhere depending on what you’re looking for when it’s on sale but Costco is usually a reasonably safe bet for stuff like ground beef, wings, chicken breast/thighs etc.

I am an executive member, too. Not even bragging, lol.

Two of my sons have companion cards. No charge. One is a card I thought I had lost, while the other is a card you can give to a family member (as long as they live at the same address - he doesn't, lol). Well, he used to.

I use my original card to use at the gas pumps at Bellingham Costco, while I use the CIBC Costco Credit Card for purchases in Canada. Home Trust Visa for US purchases (even though they take the Mastercard there). Home Trust, of course, to avoid the exchange transaction fee.

Those Costco sweats…. Be careful when you wash them. They produce a shit ton of black lint. So much so that it completely clogged my dryer lint catcher. Good initial quality (hobz patented, BH power award) but it seems like if they lose that much material during washing, it won’t last very long if you repeatedly wash your garments. Also I’m pretty sure they run color…. Good thing I didn’t wash them with any light coloured pieces.

Heavens to Betsy if they ruin my dogs heart shaped bedding’s!

Ps. On top of what the gentlemen above suggested
Buy glasses from Costco. Best prices for sure.
Also buy tires. Best warranty and prices.
Also buy batteries (both car and normal). Best warranty on that too.
Also buy tpms sensors. Dealership wants 1k for 4. Costco only wants like 30 bucks for each
Also buy clothing in general. Rip a crouch, return it after 5 plus years and they’ll still give you your money back

I save enough money on the strawberries each week to pay for my exec membership card - their berries also turn over so fast that they always last longer than any store other than Whole Foods so you end up throwing out a lot less of them if you eat them over a week. When I buy from Superstore or Save-on their strawberries start going bad in 3-4 days but the Costco ones able to make it to the end of the week most of the time.

I’m surprised there are people here who don’t have a Costco membership. The perks are so insanely good, I think it’s totally worth the membership.

It’s the only place I consistently shop at. I don’t think Ive step foot in a superstore for over 10+ years because of this Costco membership

Milk, not for the price, as it's close to Superstore prices, but for the expiration date.

Frequently the Costco milk is fresher stock with expiration dates 19-20 days out.

I have a friend who doesn't want to deal with the crowds so has resisted all these years. He's an ideal customer though - family of 3 and eats nothing but beef so he's probably missing out on hundreds of dollars in savings, if not even thousands. I don't get it but he hates crowds.

That said, if I had to deal with the Richmond crowds I'm not sure I could do it - I shop at the Willingdon and it's gotten increasingly crazy, people just park in the fire lane now.

As a person who hates crowds I get it but unless it isn't doable for him going first thing when they open it's as busy or less busy than going to Superstore when they open. I would sometimes go to the downtown one cause I work in Olympic Village when they open and boom in and out hella quick max 1 or 2 people ahead of me in line but often 0-1.

That said, although Costco is cheap the math doesn't always work out. People use the logic of shit it's hella cheap but if it's an item you ultimately cant finish and end up throwing some away you just lost all those savings and then some. Combining Costco and Superstore is a good way to go for most things though I don't buy fresh food from Superstore and often Costco is too much cause I don't like freezing meat.

People will have a family of 4 and think “we’re only 4, why do we need Costco?!?”

If you have an executive membership, the membership pays for itself. If you don’t receive enough cash back to cover the executive membership, they will cut you a cheque for the balance. It’s a no brainer.

If you add in the odd appliance purchase it's a breeze to save your membership. Some of the in store appliances are a few hundred bucks cheaper than their website or other stores and when we needed a few things this past year we found a delivery guy on Facebook who met us at Costco and helped deliver it for us pretty cheaply and we still saved a bundle.

And if you don’t see what you want, wait a month or two. Unlike places like the brick, Natuzzi etc. you do into those show rooms and it’s the same shit that’s been sitting there for years

If you're hearing impaired or have a family member who is then the BEST bargain at Costco is the hearing center. Hearing aids there are about half the price for the same product that private clinics charge - we're talking saving $2-4k in one go for hearing aids. The staff don't work on commission either so zero pressure and they are happy to have you get a check up and adjustment once a year for free (they'll also give your hearing aids a cleaning anytime and replace any of the wires/covers etc for free).

I don't have any proof, but I'd guess due to regulatory differences they can add more filler to chickens or let them grow larger, or whatever. I don't think it's an economics thing.

It's kind of like how American milk lasts almost twice as long as Canadian milk.

what's the material made of? hopefully not just inflatable rubber/plastic like in kiddie pools...make sure you keep the cover on so it's not an accessible source of water for animals.

i say this because i had a nice inflatable kiddie pool for my kids, 2 of them... and cat/racoon/squirrel both times either clawed or sank their fangs in to them deflating it.

both times happened when we forgot to cover it so i guess they came by exploring while looking to get a drink of water.

It’s the same kind of PVC that’s on inflatable dinghy’s. Super super thick. It’s so thick I can sit my 260lb ass on it and it doesn’t even dent in. The cover is also essential for holding in the heat so it’s on when we aren’t using it.

Also bought a huge chemical soup concoction and now it’s full of bromine and other interesting chemicals.

Walmart over the Easter weekend had a great price on AAA prime rib roasts. I bought one for $28 and split it in to two 20 oz rib steaks. might go back to grab whats left. in related posts this was the Walmart that was formerly a Costco on Grandview HWY

Anyone know if it's hard to connect the non powered bidet to the hot water line under my sink? I have 0 handyman skills. But would prefer a heated bidet over cold.

i was wondering if there are any small/mini portable AC's that are window shakers, I have the danby one and wanted a small one for the bedroom... either that or maybe a dual window fan at the window to circulate air...

anyone have experience with these?

We used those before we got the portable ACs.

They're decent, but they're loud AF. Also depending on how high your windows are it could be difficult to "mount" them properly, especially if you have bug screens.

They do move a lot of air though, we set one up at opposite ends of the house and had one pull and one push, worked well best to get hot air out of the house and pull in cooler air in evening. Doesn't do shit when it's 30+ though.

Don't know if this was shared already but Costco is now selling mini split Danby ACs for only $1400. You're on your own for install but that could be a huge savings from other brands - I was quoted $8-10k for a 12k BTU install.

Played it for the first time in maybe 20 years last year, still great

It’s gone downhill.. The grass isn’t what it used to be so there are tough lies everywhere when you miss the greens. Often times chipping off of basically dirt. Still a good challenge though.

Peace Portal’s par 3 used to have the thickest, most playable grass but it’s gone downhill a bit too. Haven’t played it since the new owners took over and hope they can restore it to its former glory. At its peak you’d get a decent lie 90% of the time if you missed the green. Now I’d say it’s 60-70% time at best.

PP Par 3 is also a good challenge because there are a few holes where you can’t take a full swing because of the trees overhead. My 56 is good for 100 yards normally and the 2nd hole is like 95 downhill. I have to hit a knockdown PW at like 75% but the greens are so receptive that it’ll stick. It’s good practice and my wife enjoys it as she’s just getting into golf.

Peace Portal’s full size course is now called The Hills at Portal Golf Club under its new ownership. They’ve made some changes including making the front 9 the back as well as changing the lower mainland’s most ridiculous par 4 into a par 5, which it should have been in the first place. 495 from the blues and 461 from the whites with an uphill tee shot to a dog leg right. It was always a 3 shot hole to make the green for me so I’m glad they’ve changed it. It looks like they’ve shortened the original first hole (now the 10th) to make it a par 4 instead of a 5.

I’ll go check it out soon and see what else they’ve done.

If any of you are looking for a decent pair of affordable over-the-ear headphones. Costco is going to have a $150 off deal on a pair of Sony WH1000XM4/B

https://electronics.sony.com/audio/headphones/headband/p/wh1000xm4-b

Sale starts in August, but if you are interested, get them now while they're in stock and get price adjustment later.

The cans are not their flagship bluetooth model, the XM5, but who has $499.00? Bluetooth technology has come a long way. Impressive specs. If you're a purist, they can be plugged in. Best of both worlds.

I recently purchased a pair of Limited Edition Audio Technica headphones, so not really interested. If I had known about this upcoming sale, I would jump at it.

It's stronger in taste (both sweeter and saltier than DIY or Korean place).

Goes decent with rice or something to deal with the stronger taste.

I used to get them and separate them into portion bags, vacuum-seal and freeze them. Take out a pack and quick stir-fried and you got the protein portion for dinner done.

It's convenient. But ever since I got my own meat slicer, I just do my own bulgogi with sauce from H-Mart.

Nope. Used a huge machine that lifted a heavy ram that was thrown up into the air and came down with great force. Large basin made of solid granite the size of that shown in the video. Came down once every 2 seconds. It was very consistent. Timing was important. Otherwise your hand would get crushed. Had to ensure the mochigome got turned into the centre each shot. If not, the ram would possibly damage the granite bowl or the ram itself. Battering ram was solid metal with a wooden shell. Hard to explain without a drawing. Don't know what happened to that machine. It was brought over from Japan by boss. Come New Years, I was relied upon to make the mochi. With the invention of the automatic rice cooker with kneading capability, people could make the stuff at home. Funny thing is, I have my mom's old National Mochi Making Machine. Works to this day.

BTW, dude in video is slapping the mochi with lots of shouting, but not really turning it that often. Pretty awesome show he puts on. He does put water on the mochi just the right amount. Also very important. Especially when you make Kagami Mochi. Too much water and in a day or so gets moldy. Too little water and the mochi starts to crack over time. Then there are the other types of mochi, like komochi and noshi mochi, just to name a few. Mochi for manju is made from rice flour (mochiko). Manju is filled with anko (bean paste) Koshi-an, stubu-an in both black and white variety........ kuro-an and shiro-an. Sakura manju is probably the neatest looking manju. Made to look like sakura. Pink kawa with mochi gome not pounded all the way, filled with bean paste and wrapped in green leaves. Kuri manju, Mikasa Manju, etc. Made 'em all.

I also made sushi, my specialty being the futomaki. Back then the ingredients were top notch. Even used unagi straight from Japan. I don't think people use it that much, since it is so expensive. I remember making the gu from scratch. Scrubbing the bleach off the gourd strips, cooking the shiitake, etc.

You’re like the most interesting old man I’ve ever digitally met. For sure need to go dim sum with you and listen to some of your cool stories. I got so many questions !!

Brought a packet of the Costco bulgogi to make for the buds on the first night at the cabin over the long weekend.

9/10 - Very good, would buy again for sure. I doped it up a bit with some added Coca-Cola, sesame oil, and chili oil.
