Love 'em or hate 'em. Discuss everything from the latest items and return policies to pharmacy and optical departments. I would like to hear from employees.

I'll start with my favourites. Maui Onion Chips.......... damn, they're good. Did you know they carry Wagyu Beef? At least they were at the Willingdon Costco.

History of Costco, the differences between locations, etc. Just to name some topics...........

Love Costco. Best money savings tip I ever made as a poor adult (with a membership???) was only buy what you can carry. Got pretty awkward when it came to buying a mattress.

Honestly I don’t find anything there an excellent deal. But they grab you with the odd unique item and once in a while I find an item in the clothing isle. Lol.

Pizza slice kinda guy myself.

Spent a summer working there in College. Place is bumping at 3 in the morning.

Yup they've been carrying Wagyu in stores more less this entire covid time. Got it once, the prime rib. It was good for sure but at double the price of their regular prime rib it wasn't twice as good. If you did a blind tasting you'd probably just think it was Angus AAA.

When things go on sale, it's pretty good. Once in a while they get stuff that makes you wonder........... like Oyster Sauce.

Kirkland products are pretty good. Low dose ASA, for example. Way cheaper than the original Aspirin, which Costco also carries. Kirkland Mayo. Just as good as Hellman's. Most of their stuff is probably made by the brand name manufacturer.

As for their pharmacy, there was a time, I got frustrated by the waits and lineups. To the point it wasn't worth the savings. It has gotten a lot better the last year or so. The savings are substantial. The dispensing fee, that is.

I fuckin love Costco. Lately been buying the dry ribs made in store with a similar seasoning than the wings. Great deal for $16 or whatever it is and it can be like 5 meals, the peices are very meaty

My shame return moment was last year. I returned 4 arm chairs, like large nice fabric arm chairs for a living/dining room about 2 years after purchase lol.. we couldn’t recall how much they were but they no longer worked after renovations and we were eyeing chairs from Structube. Dragged the 4 chairs to the downtown location and returned them, ended up getting about $315 each back for them lol felt kinda bad man..

I always bought my oyster sauce from costco. You pay the same amount of half the volume at T&T.

We only had a costco membership really because of the savings of going to Cypress. Anything else is a plus as we rarely needed the amount stuff that costco packages come in except toilet paper and paper towels. Now that we have a kid..... Huggies is best deal in town, especially when they are on sale.

I also support them because they are good to their employees unlike Amazon.

A neat perk of being a Costco member is their membership is worldwide. Wherever there's a costco around the world, it'll still work.

Literally saved my life in Japan, being my sole provider of actual Cereal in the country. Never felt so western, craving cereal like a 10 year old.

Also tried visiting in Taiwan, they each have their own unique products and local products. So like you get family size bags of Calbee chips, and i'm not talking about the chintzy "family" size portions you get a safeway that any grown man can eat. They had sushi platters in Japan as well in the deli section.

Hawaii had pokebowls in their Costco Deli, handsdown the cheapest poke you'll get anywhere in the world pound for pound I think.

I got my costco membership mainly cuz of their tire service. It was $8/tire swapping my winter to summers.. but then they jacked up the price last year.

Sadly, I don't get my tires done at Costco anymore. Got tire d of going at 5 in the morning to line up to get tires changed. I can't remember the last time I've had a flat tire repaired there. They always come up with excuses not to fix it. During peak periods, winter and summer tire changeovers, they hire temps to do the work and they are not great. I've had them destroy studs and lug nuts. They'll pay for the damage and reimburse you for the cost, but if I'm going to end up elsewhere, why bother? I also don't think there's that much of a savings. I can get good deals elsewhere, like Tireland or Kal Tire. I got tires for my EV through Tire Rack when borders were still open.

I now take my tires and vehicles to Kal Tire or more recently, National Tire Warehouse. National Tire Wholesale - Specializing in tires and custom wheels, Burnaby and Greater Vancouver Area (http://www.nationaltire.ca) These guys took the tires I bought from Tire Rack and winter steelies I purchased from the dealership and had them done in under half an hour. No questions about where I got the stuff from, this or that............. they just plain did it. No appointment, too. Just last week, I had a slow leak. Took the tire off the EV and took it to Costco. They refused to work on it. I took it to National Tire, and they did it in five freaking minutes!

I used to go to this place religiously when they had a place on second avenue near Main Street. Got to know the owner, Mike Mercurio. Super nice guy. They closed down shop, so I thought, but discovered they are now in Burnaby across the street from Lordco NFL. Mike retired, but the place is still like it was when he was around. So, Costco tire shop is no longer a thing for me............ they can take their nitrogen and stick it up their wazoo, lol.

It wasn't that long ago I raved about the service and offerings at Costco Tires. How things "change," eh? OK, enough puns for the day.

Their pizza used to be so good like 15-20 years ago. The Hawaiian especially with big chunks of real bacon, fresh pineapple, decent ham, and multiple cheeses on a decent crust.

They changed the recipe ... maybe 10 years ago? It's not particularly good now.

For some stuff the price difference vs a regular store isn't that big, but I easily pay off my membership just with the money I save on beef so anything else is just a bonus. Sometimes it's a hassle that they only have 1 model of each type of product but they're pretty good at only carrying quality stuff so it saves a lot of hassle researching.

I don't know if all of them are like this but here they seem to have an affinity for non-GMO products which annoys the hell out of me. That's a rant for another day though.

I once saw someone in the return line, holding a half empty jug of milk. It was truly pathetic.

While I was warranteeing a car battery I saw a woman exchanging one apple out of a huge bag of apples. It blew my mind but the staff didn't even blink.

Which Costco has Wagyu? I only remember seeing the tomahawk by the meat section... but not gonna do it cause that bone alone is like $100. :fuckthatshit:

As for regular Costco item I recommend:
Frozen cooked meatballs - great for lazy cookers. My usual lazy pasta is onion, chopped garlic, bolognese sauce and microwave the meatballs for 5min then dump them into sauce and add to pasta of choice.

Meat lasagna - quite good and cheap.

Washed baby spinach - again, good, simple and can be anything like salad, dump them into noodle soup and great price. It's actually a really good deal as it's pure leaves.

Wet flushable wipes - once you try this shit, you would never shit the same again. It's like having the cleaness of a bidet, without all the hassle.

I get the shrimp salad once in a while........ actually, whatever goes on sale.

As for wet flushable wipes, amazon.ca had Cottonelle ones for really dirt cheap I stocked up on them. For occasional cave man days, I use Dude Wipes.

https://www.dudeproducts.com

Overpriced, I know......... then, I got in touch with my feminine side and got these wipes. Summer's Eve........ hey, if it can clean a woman's junk, it's probably just fine for my junk.

It was also on sale on amazon. Same ingredients as dude wipes, but way cheaper - not fair. If you can't lick 'em, join 'em (okay, that was bad).

I think the majority do but the stock comes and goes you have to luck out. I've been to the Downtown Costco 5 times in the last 3 months, saw it once and they've been selling it since at least May. Looks like it may have stopped though.

San Pelegrino <sp?> on sale is good price. Must keep eye on expiry dates. I miss shopping at the Costco's in the US. Bundaberg Ginger Beer. You can get that shit up here, but not at Costco Canada. There's a brand I've discovered recently, Fever Tree. They make the best tonic water I've ever tasted. They also make a ginger beer which is also delicious. Costco recently started carrying 24 packs (250 no bottles) for $26.99 of tonic water.

Italian Strawberry Syrup, Tropicana Strawberry Peach juice, Real Lemon Concentrate, and, the best ingredient, frozen organic sliced strawberries (from Costco). Best drink ever. No ice needed, because the frozen strawberries make the concoction ice cold without diluting the drink. So, so good. I carbonate the hell out of the water. Many familes and myself included swear by the Kirkland baby wet wipes. Once you've used those there's no going back lol, super convenient to wipe anything besides a babies bum and they are thick and soft.

My usual runs to Costco are for toilet paper (Cashmere, mmhmm so soft haha), Popcorners and seaweed chips, ColdFX (on sale) and other supplements, beef and definitely the rotisserie chicken, it's by far the best of the big box stores. Safeway chicken is always dry.
And whatever else I see that's on sale regular use items like detergent, shampoo, etc.

I used to buy the $80 for $100 gift cards like for Scan Spa, Keg and Hy's but haven't bought any in a while.

Hotdog and poutine are a must every visit regardless of time of day.

i'm finding costco is only good if you have 4+ mouths to feed/care for.

I'm usually feeding for 4, but I also have a lot of storage space so buying bulk is currently not an issue.

So I can use this as a personal wipe? Like Cottonelle Flushable Wipes?

I personally don't, but I don't see why not haha

As for their pharmacy, there was a time, I got frustrated by the waits and lineups. To the point it wasn't worth the savings. It has gotten a lot better the last year or so. The savings are substantial. The dispensing fee, that is.

There's always the Costco Pharmacy online where you can get prescriptions by mail. I signed my mother-in-law up for this because of Covid, it's fast!

Oh I like this thread. I worked at the Langford Costco for a couple years while in college. I worked as a cashier/assistant, vault clerk (count cash) and tire shop.

I still buy Bridgestone RE71 at Costco but I buy in person and take them away for install at a more convenient location. It’s high volume and most workers are not careful with wheels. I watched them put my OEM 94 Supra TT wheel face down on the concrete.

I ate a whole lot of Hot dog + pop combos and grabbed samples while working. The break room had a foosball table. Never liked the pizza even loaded with hot peppers and Parmesan. Other staff always got poutine and could never finish it so I always got their leftovers for free lololol

Fun fact: The busiest warehouses in the world by sales were always in Hawaii. Everyone wanted to transfer to their warehouses of course!

We enjoy the ready made salads they sell. Good healthy choices.

Employees are quite happy and there are many lifers at the Langford location. Costco has an Employee Agreement book which reads like a union agreement. It clearly lays out wage increases based on hours, benefits, etc. Costco has never been union but I always liked how they aim to treat employees fairly. Back then you received $4.00 per hour extra for working on Sundays. People still called in sick because they partied too hard lol

Other fun stuff.

They purposely don’t have express lines because they don’t want you to grab a small amount of items and get out quickly. They want you to stay a while and feel the need to make the trip worth your while by filling your cart with more items. In 2008 average receipt was $100 and now it is likely $200.

Items come and go because it creates false urgency since everyone knows if you don’t get it while it’s there it may be gone for a while. That is by design.

The worst example of returns was a local kayak rental company. They would return the kayaks at the end of every season. The store manager had a talk with them and said no more. Usually if you have the balls to return it Costco will take it.

Yes. We carry fever tree. In stock at all local locations except willingdon, downtown and langley

Ginger beer isn't available locally

I'm waiting for Costco to carry Starbucks Frap in bottles again. Used to buy them when they went on sale. Now can't get 'em, period.

San Pelegrino <sp?> on sale is good price. Must keep eye on expiry dates. I miss shopping at the Costco's in the US. Bundaberg Ginger Beer. You can get that shit up here, but not at Costco Canada. The last drink I bought from US Costco was Fever Tree Premium Ginger Beer. Man, that shit was unbelievably good.

I went into the line at the driveway into the parking lot. As soon as the doors opened up, line up moved quickly. I got in, got two boxes of KN95 masks, paid for it, and got to the car by 9:20.

200 boxes left. Nobody was buying them, even though they were on sale. $10.00 off. $29.99 for box of 20. Individually wrapped.

Interesting, it says they are losing money on every hot dog combo sold @ $1.50usd.

I remember they used to be $2.00 cad once upon a time and was happy when they finally dropped it to $1.50 to match US pricing a decade+ ago...

^It's smart marketing for them. I'm sure IKEA operates on a loss within their cafeteria as well.

It's a method to attract you into the store and purchase. They know for every $1.50 hot dog they sell, your trip to the store may elicit hundreds of dollars in purchases.

Same reason they used to offer (prior to COVID) ridiculous amounts of food samples throughout the store, attracts people to visit Costco for that very reason, and with the long lines/busy parking lots, encourages further purchases in store.

Now that they have self checkout lanes, they don't really follow that thought anymore.

I'm not sure anyone else in this thread has mentioned it, but Costco by a huge margin has the best price on Propane on the lower island (not sure about the mainland). When Costco president W. Craig Jelinek once complained to Costco co-founder and former CEO Jim Sinegal that their monolithic warehouse business was losing money on their famously cheap $1.50 hot dog and soda package, Sinegal listened, nodded, and then did his best to make his take on the situation perfectly clear.

i wish they sold lactose free homo milk instead of just 2%.

everything that's produce bagged, there's almost never any need to pick and choose, they're all good. other grocery stores u gotta flip and find the good ones that arent soft as fuck or half rotten.

also a trip to costco is like half a trip to best buy. i can check out what the most popular basic need semi premium electronics are. lol.

their vitamin section is also like 2-5x bigger than any other store lol.

i also love how they sell so many types of unsalted nuts prebagged. my only gripe is they dont sell pistachios raw, shelled, UNSALTED...

their online store is not bad and fedex is always quick to ship it.

20% off Hy's gift cards... 3% back costco MC at restaraunts. 23% off Hy's is a pretty good deal. you can't get that kinda deal anytime at any other premium steak house's. RS Hy's meet after COVID over lol.

I think you need to ask for the condiments, no? They have been pre-packaged in little clear containers for individual consumption for a while now.

They give out ketchup (catsup), mustard, and relish in packets. And, you have to ask for it. I asked for onions and that's what I got.

So, when I got home, I opened up a can of baked beans, warmed it up and put it on the hot dog. I even sprinkled on some crumbled bacon bits (also from Costco).

Didn't have room for the Saputo Sliced Provolone I had on hand (also on sale at Costco). If only the buns opened up wider, gulolol.

Addendum:

I used to buy canned baked beans at Costco, but when they go on sale at Superstore/Walmart and sometimes Save-On Foods (case lot sale) they're cheaper than Costco. In fact, sometimes lower than Costco's sale price. Ever notice Superstore matching Costco prices a lot these days? I get Optimum points, especially with the PC World Elite Mastercard, so it's a bonus. Wait for Points Redemption events at Shoppers (another topic in itself). Shop like a mother....... pfft.

Great68

Costco is definately not always the cheapest on the single items. Lots of times things on sale at other grocery stores will be cheaper, however for the amount cheaper it's not my time and driving around between all those other stores for what those savings are worth.
I hate driving around for shopping more than I need to. Right now I do about 98% of my shopping between Costco (once a month), Country Grocer and Save On Foods which are the closest two grocery stores to m my house(about once a week)

Also, since I'm a gold member at costco the cash rebate is nice. At the very least I've always managed to get enough back to fully cover next year's membership renewal.

That's one thing I've noticed when buying steaks or pork from there, if you don't freeze it within the first day or so, it'll start turning brown/grey on you extremely fast.

Way quicker than meat I purchase from other markets, and I've never been able to figure out why?

Meat oxidization is normal with any meat from anywhere. I don't notice any difference in time duration from Costco meat vs meat from anywhere else. Maybe it's just because it's a bigger package = more air can get at it?

My only questionable Costco return was for a BBQ I had purchased. IIRC it was around $1200 originally and went on sale for $900 a few weeks later. I asked customer service if I could get the better price and they said no. It was already built and used so I retrieved the original receipt from home, went back, bought another one and took it straight from the till to the returns counter. I handed them my old receipt, returned the new BBQ and got credit for the original amount. SeemsGood

I have had like 3 Kyocera peelers and 2 smaller knifes I used to fruits, the youngest around 2yrs and the oldest over 10, and I still find them just fine. One of the peelers broke when I accidentally dropped on the floor and chipped, other than that... zero complains.

That’s just the starting price. They’re more for collecting. One of a kind, hand made pieces of art. Just check out the thread about watches here on RS. My budget for a good knife was $150.00. So close to it, I just decided to eat Mr. Noodles for awhile.

You forget that people on Revscene make $250,000 in annual household income at minimum. (If need be, read Real Estate thread as proof.)

I don't even want to begin to think of what MG1 receives from his multiple fat pensions and whatnot. He's a thrifty fellow on RS, but his bank accounts (not including offshore accounts,) spending habits, and hobbies are the opposite of that. I think he slipped up today.

Your post is so weird - the timing of it. I went out to the back patio to see what I had in the bar fridge. It has been a while since I checked it. Lo and behold, three bottles were nestled in the bottom drawer. It was like striking gold, lol. It expires in October 2020. Still good.

I was going to pull a Karen and say someone on RS says you do. Is it because I’m Jewish? Yeah......... no. Anyway in their clearance section, they had some good deals. 50 Staedler Norica 2HB pencils for $2.97!!!! On top of that, it came with a pencil sharpener and 50 of those eraser caps. Wow, I got me two boxes. Pencils to last me two lifetimes. Gulolow. This huge wall clock I’ve been eying for months but couldn’t bring myself to buying was on clearance. I jumped at the opportunity. Anyway.......... I just wanted my Heluva Good Dip. Cans of Diet Coke was on sale, too. Oh, the lineup was five minutes tops.

In case you haven't heard of it, you can go "window shopping" virtually and find out what are new items, sale items or clearance items at websites like above, where someone physically takes their camera and post up items/prices (including new/sale items added later in the week during the weekend updates).

That way you can decide whether or not to go to Costco this week, without wondering if something is on sale or not.

FYI new pictures for the latest week will be available tomorrow morning after 5am...

I was introduced to a Dark and Stormy (basically a whiskey ginger) when I was doing keto. Obvs that would throw me out of ketosis, but I had to find a low sugar/low carb ginger beer. I came across Rootside over on the island. They make a Ginger Beer concentrate (https://rootside.ca/collections/mixers/products/ginger-beer-mix) with 8g carbs (6g sugar)/serving. Secret, like anything Costco that is in demand.............. call. They field calls starting 8:00 am. Ask when next shipment comes in. They can tell you when if it's in transit (2 days). Then you call them the day it is supposed to arrive. They will let you know when to come in.

Meanwhile, RS Costco Crew (formerly, RS beatdown crew - but never really happened) will be on the look out and let you know. Hell, if I see them, I'll get some for you. How many pallets of the shit would you like? LOL. I don't even go look for them since I purchased two Kirkland USA 200 pair packs. I'm good for a while, lol.

Call them and press 1 for administration. It's basically the folks at the small desks by the cashiers.

BTW, Brighton Location has self scan stations - except people are always manning it and actually do it for you. Line up is quicker than the regular line ups.

Quite the opposite here in Toronto.

When you ask them when item XYZ is coming in, they will just blurt out some random time/day and send you on your way. Things like Kirkland toilet paper and stuff like that (high demand items) they'll straight up just say "I don't know. Come back tomorrow morning at opening."

They're the 2x150 pair boxes, right?

Even under normal situations, regular washing with hand soap can irritate the skin of those with eczema or sensitive skin to the point of getting cracks or rashes. Hand sanitizers have the same effect.

underscore
10-19-2020, 05:59 PM
I remember laughing back when sanitizer was selling out everywhere because the hand lotion was still fully stocked. Buncha noobs out there didn't know how fried repeatedly sanitizing/washing makes your hands.

Those gloves really are good for everything though, I use them for all kinds of stuff. Be careful using them with some chemicals, I found they started reacting with Lysol toilet cleaner and started giving off fumes that I assume aren't exactly healthy.

Actually, COVID has been great for my hands...
Being in the restaurant industry I'm basically washing my hands 20 times an hour and I find it pointless to moisturize as it makes my hand greasy and slippery, only to be washed off again 5 minutes later. Couple that with eczema and so for many years my hands have been really really dry and cracked. To the point that in the Winter time I couldn't stretch out my fingers without cracking skin and bleeding. Even squeezing a lemon I had to be careful or it would sting like burning needles .... It was terrible.

Now that I wear nitrile gloves at work. I've started to slather on some heavy cream or lubricant like vaseline before slapping on the gloves. My hands are finally back to normal. It's been so long I almost forgot what that feels like...

Before this pandemic I used to go two, three times a day to various casinos. I started to wear gloves when I was in the casino. After watching dirty old chinese men drip their shit all over their pants, shoes, the floor, and hands then leave the washrooms without washing their hands, I simply had to wear gloves. They touch cards and chips at the tables and press buttons on the slot machines - fuck. Hand sanitizers were not a thing back then. I wore them from the time I entered to the time I left. Tried that for a while but gave up, I found it difficult to sleep.
It was uncomfortable and warm and restrictive.

Called the Brighton Avenue Costco just now and the lady said that they've made their way to the Lower Mainland. Should be in tomorrow, but call before heading to the warehouse.

They're the 2x150 pair boxes, right?

If they've made it to the Lower Mainland, some of the other stores might have received it already. Probably talking about some distribution centre if there's such a place?

The blue nitrile one comes in single boxes. The white ones in the pharmacy are two packs. The last time I saw them in Richmond there was a sign that said one box per membership.

I've been wearing nitrile gloves for the better part of 25 years. Scrubbing car grime off your hands and under your nails, is fucking brutal.

This comment reminded me of HS shop class, I don't know what it is, but I remember this really thick liquid soap/goop that could clean like years of grime off your hands, and your hands end up feeling baby soft, remember having to use it all the time to get everything off our hands, but it took so long to scrub/lather

At Brighton Avenue, they just put them out and there wasn't even a sign up. The woman who showed me where they were said not to worry, so I picked up four.

At HS we just got the Lava bar. In pre-apprenticeship school we used the dry, green, Worx cleaner. It worked pretty good. I cringe to think I used to have to brush my nails, everytime I went on a test drive or a break. Hell, I still remember wiping my hands down with solvent soaked rags, to get most of the grease off.

ha i was thinking the same thing...

Ps you dive locally then? your dry suit certified? done it a few times here (190 of my 200 dives are warm water) and just can't get used to it

I used to dive locally, but to be frank that was while I was in my 20s and before I had kids. I've only been down twice in the last 15 years.. Mexico, and Hawaii lol. My wetsuit is 7mm however, and it wasn't not too bad for me, but does get cold especially in November/December.

Had a buddy come up after 45 mins with me with blue lips and slurring his words.. so dry suit is the way to go locally, but I guess my extra layer of "insulation" kept it reasonably comfortable for me in the wetsuit.

Lilaznviper, masks are still in stock at the Willingdon location. I was there at closing time. A little low, but get there in the morning and you’ll be okay. They now have black ones.

Flip and others looking for the blue nitrile gloves, they are on order and will arrive on the 13th of November. Only 400 are slated to arrive.

Dove when I was in my 20s, man, I was brave, wetsuits and I dove Whytecliff & Porteau Cove etc. Then I went all the way to get my Dive Master & Instructor license.
Now, i'm too old and all my buddies are married with kids. Last time i dove was 6 yrs ago in Bali. Only warm water diving for me.

I like how this Costco thread took a hard left turn but it's still enjoyable haha

I went to DT Costco to get some grub and the tables are still not back yet so I ate by the bike rack outside... saw half a dozen mice running around the bushes, almost darting into my poutine ... :heckno: I grabbed all my shit and walked to the other side and ate off the 2" ledge by the wall ... super inconvenient not sure I'll go back until they put the dining area back.

Seniors hours are back again. 8:00 am, baby! Monday to Saturday.

Get first crack at clearance items and no line ups. I go at around 8:15 after the first batch goes in and it's smooth sailing........ shop for 15 minutes and I'm out of there with no lineups. Those older seniors take forever to shop, so up to 9:00 am, it's super fast. I'll even go to the "not so, self serve," cash registers. They do all the work for you. Grab a hot dog and drink on the way out. Win!

I had to pick up meds, so went to Willingdon at 8:15. Grand total of maybe 20 seniors. At 8:30, I see this young Asian woman booking it down the aisle like she stole something. I ask one of the workers why she’s in here and they tell me they make the call at 8:30 if they can let everybody else come in early. Early shoppers are a pretty quick bunch. It’s nice not to bump into people like you end up doing during the normal hours.

BTW, both Willingdon and Brighton Avenue locations had the Lysol Wipes. Just missed it. Willingdon might get them late this week, but no idea for sure. The shipment yesterday was a surprise to the warehouse workers.
