On to the next season and WOW it starts quick, NHL awards on Thursday, Draft on Friday and Free agency next Monday. I heard on (Canucks Twitter) they might have a couple deals done which they were waiting for the Playoffs to be over before announcing it.
All I know is this season is going to be exciting, I wonder what they are going cook over summer.

I'm actually excited to see what management can cook up this off season. The team will definitely look very different next year. So we have to see who the team will be built around and who they find to fill in the gaps. Last year was fantastic but I'm sure we're all hoping next year is even better. Our window of contention is right effing now and luckily I have great confidence in management (for once). LFG!

Your thoughts about the team punishing season ticketholders for re-selling their tickets through methods not related to Ticketmaster?
https://vancouver.citynews.ca/2024/06/25/vancouver-canucks-season-tickets-crackdown-resell-profit/
One fan, who doesn’t want his name published, tells CityNews he shares eight seats in the upper bowl with friends. He’s been a season ticket holder for more than 25 years and his account was recently flagged.
“I received a letter saying … my account will not be renewed next year,” he explained. “The letter said you either 100 per cent transferred all your tickets or you sold them to a broker.”
He claims that’s not the case. He maintains he’s used the tickets for up to 10 to 20 games a season, or has shared them with friends, family, co-workers, and members of his local recreation hockey team.
The Canucks season ticket holder website states fans can resell their tickets through “the official Ticketmaster website.” He says he has done that a handful of times but was still flagged.

Classic Aquaman. These season ticket holders were there when the canucks sucked and now when they are showing some prominance again, he tries to squeeze every penny out of them.
Ticketmaster can also go fuck off with their monopoly and insane fees.

It's a greedy move with the Canucks trying to make more money. I really enjoyed buying cheap last minute tickets rather then paying full price. I know its a business and all but I guess its how the rich get richer.

I obviously can't speak for him, but it would be a bit awkward though if he said, "Nah, winning it as a player is so much better." But it's not like he has that to compare with anyway.
Ask him did it feel better winning the gold medal as the starter or backup to Price?

murd0c
06-26-2024, 07:18 AM
I don't have a clue how Mogilny can be snubbed so bad, he was one of the first to defect from Russia, that alone should be enough to let him in.
68style
06-26-2024, 07:32 AM
Nevermind all the difficulties he faced defecting and adjusting to a totally new way of life, his career stats are almost identical to Alfredsson and Kariya... both of them are already in. Just crazy that he hasn't even been on a ballot yet.
winson604
06-26-2024, 08:48 AM
Too bad it isn't transparent because I'd love to be a fly on the wall. Aside from the things already mentioned he has a higher points per game than a lot of the others who have gone in and you can't even make the cup argument because he has won 1 where as some with less numbers haven't. Truly mind boggling but I'm still holding out hope he will get in one day.

I can’t remember the specifics but there is definitely some bad blood when it comes to both the NHL and NHLPA and mogilny. I’ve heard a few different conversations on the radio relating to this and I feel like one of them might have said they don’t expect him ever to be inducted

Hearing Chicago and Vancouver working on a deal that will create cap room for the Canucks — potentially involving Ilya Mikheyev and rights to Sam Lafferty, with a second-round pick as a sweetener.
Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli further reported that the Blackhawks would send the Canucks a fourth-round pick in 2027, provided the trade takes place.

15% retained is $712,500. That's less than league minimum for a player. Pretty palatable if you ask me. Also, the 2nd rounder is in 2027 so that defers our problem until later. Obviously we super short on 2nd rounders in our organization but we're in that win-now mode. We need guys who can immediately make the team better for next year.

That's a great price for Joshua, big group of us were talking after hockey last night and saying 3.5 would be reasonable for Dak... I was afraid he might get as high as 4.5 from another team that got too excited about last year.
I hope he can be more consistent, I didn't notice him much outside of the games he got multiple points in for the playoffs.
Hondaracer

If Z also takes a discount at 4.75mil, replace lafferty with 775k player, replace myers and Cole with 775k players, and desmith or Silovs for 1.25mil, there's 9.3mil for guentzel.
If they want stronger d pairing, either will need to trade another to make space or get a cheaper winger in FA instead of Guentzel.

Gar and Dak drive that line. In the beginning of the season they were centered by Suter before he got injured. They were already playing amazing without Blueger
68style
06-27-2024, 10:48 AM
Blueger is only on a 2 year, he's getting a chance to show he belongs in the NHL and if he does he'll get paid. He's been a pretty fringe guy for the most part.

IMO, I think we should re-sign Myers at a discounted rate if doable, somewhere in the range of 2.25 range if he wants to stay and agree with Zadorov's number at 4.75 max would be good.

Love the deal for Dak as long as he plays how he did this year. Has to hit 15 to 20 goals and be top 10 in hits. If he regresses into a 10 goal guy or battles injuries, it won't look good.
Pumped that the third line is sticking together.
I bet Myers will get better options in Free Agency, depends how much of a discount he wants to take to stay with the team. I would be happy with a 3 x 3.
We need some of the younger guys from Abbotsford to step up and fill holes. Succesfull teams always have young studs playing on entry level deals. Need guys like Pods, Ratu, Karlsson, McWard to step up so we can get a top winger for Petey.

haha true. Sometimes we average joes forget that what these entertainers make in a year is what some of us make in a lifetime. As for Blueger as a hockey player he won the dream with Vegas last year. Something money can't buy and not everyone is lucky to achieve. All you have to do is look at the Canuck players hanging up in the rafters.

Guentzel as hottest free agent ... almost always, they turn out to be a flop as the hype jacks up the price, they get this long ass contract like 7 or 8 yrs. Can you think of a hot free agent in the past few years that has turned out well? I can only think of bad ones like Tavares, Kahdri, Jack Campbell, Johnny Gaudreau

I was pretty confident after the Myers signing, there's no money left on the table for Zadarov. He's not going to take a big discount and Myers didn't take any hometown discount.
Allvin did a pretty good job with the other signings so far, but the Myers one is probably "fair", which means, not good in the context of building a cup contending team.

You could still afford Z if you get a cheaper winger in FA, but you'd have to wait until FA to find out before circling back to him, which he likely won't be around long enough for.
They're also in on Tanev, but i don't think that'll work cause he needs term. Talk today about getting Marino from NJD, which would be nice, but i don't see what assets would go the other way.

Can someone explain how Myers at $3M isn't a hometown discount? The comment isn't unique to any one individual. I absolutely disagree with the sentiment, he's literally half the cost now as a veteran RHD. He has the size and understanding of how to be successful with our current coaching staff. In fact, the coaching staff asked for him to be re-signed.
It wasn't a case of signing Myers OR Zadorov. They were trying their hardest to keep both. Big Z wants to get paid the most rather than take a slight discount (like every other UFA who has re-signed so far). No shade, that's just his decision to make. It's exactly what I had been saying had Joshua decided to do the same. Wish you the best of luck, but we need everyone to leave money on the table for the entire team to continue being competitive.
Paying Z $5M+ would have been a mistake and I fully agree with Allvin allowing him to walk at this point. It sucks ass, but it is what it is. He's likely looking for $5.5-6M and term. Huge risk for a dman who until this past postseason has been a 4-5 D at best.
with LTIR, we currently have about $14.5M cap space. Had Z agreed to $5M that would leave $9.5M for a top 6 forward and perhaps some depth on D. There are holes on the lineup yet to fill so this is why management can't overpay to keep one guy. Blueger, Joshua and Myers all left money on the table to return. Z could have done the same.
I get that we all had a huge emotional connection to Z despite his short time here, but we're playing the win-now game and need all the tools we can get to have greater success next year.

Petey isn't likable in the slightest. Miller and Hughes are the faces of this team.
He's beloved, people were chanting for him in support when he was struggling.. In the playoffs! I've never seen anything like that before! Usually fans turn on players in that situation; especially Canadian fans.

you have to ignore that he was getting $6mil before (thanks Benning). he certainly was not playing like a $6mil man for most of that contract.
i think it was Donnie/Dhali that said $3mil would be what he would've gotten in the open market. so, it's a fair price, but not a discount. Cole got $3mil last year.

I think Myers at $3M is just his market price, not a hometown discount.
It's half what he made before, but he was super overpaid for that entire contract. Not just 1 year... the entire contract. He's never ever been a $6M a year dman. Keep in mind his age, this is a retirement contract now.
He's improved quite a bit under the current coaching staff, he had some hero moments in the playoffs this year with his nutsack save in Nashville and some big hits, but this contract feels right. I agree with a previous commenter that maybe 2 years was better given his age, but he seems to have managed to stay pretty healthy and play younger than his age thus far.
Ideally on any team I think you want to generally follow a salary structure like this:
1/2 D - $15M
3/4 D - $6M
5/6 D - $3M
Canucks are basically at that now, tho a Tanev signing would skew things slightly as Myers would drop to 3rd pairing.

well, Chicago picked up rights to Canucks legend Sam Lafferty in the Mik trade, and he's still going to free agency.
I don't know why any pending UFA wouldn't go to July 1 just to see what all the competing offers were before making a decision. Unless the team that acquired your rights also happened to be the exact team you wanted to go to, and even then, it'd still make sense to drive up the price with competing offers.

Especially if you're a high priced UFA .. .only a certain number of teams can offer say a $8M or 9M AAV ... always get it done before July 1st. Even if difference is like half mil per season AAV ... peace of mind is worth it, I think.

As much as people wanted us to make a big splash, I'm sort of relieved we didn't bring the dump truck of cash to overpay some of these old(er) veterans. It's definitely anti-climactic but hopefully in the long run, these are the smart, value signings we look back on as genius moves by management.
Also, considering the kind of money being thrown around the league today, the contracts we signed beforehand are all looking great in terms of value. Depth and options is what we need for a long run, and that's what we got. Yes, one can argue we are lacking some top notch star level offense but I think they did the best they could.

So many gross overpayments or term handed out for players 30+. I don’t mind debrusk, he’ll be 28 I think in October. Only cringe from the canucks was Desharnais 2x2, but maybe they feel they have no viable depth in the AHL to lean on so may as well keep a capable 7th d.

“I think July 1 is an interesting day, but it's also a scary day,” Allvin told reporters in an afternoon press conference at Rogers Arena. “And I think we were pretty good here today in terms of managing our money and getting, hopefully, good value out of the players we got.
“We felt that we needed to be a faster team in that transition game, and by adding Sherwood, Heinen and DeBrusk, they all can skate.”
Overall, I think that Allvin did a good job with the free agent signings.
You have DeBrusk who has size, speed, and offensive skill to play with Petey.
The team’s speed is better for the transition game like what Allvin mentioned to reporters yesterday.
When the opposing team turns over the puck in the neutral zone, our forwards have more speed and skill to go on the counterattack for a scoring chance.
Our defence has more size and speed with Desharnais.

If Debrusk notches 25 goals on a consistent basis and plays his strong defensive game he is known for throughout the contract, I see it as a solid signing. Really happy with the forward signings. Heinan is going to be a stud on the 3rd/4th lines. Local kid, fans are going to be happy with him.
Defense is looking suspect though. I don't know if GMPA is going to go after a top 4 guy in a trade to shore it up - but I am nervous going into the season with the group we have now unless someone steps up big time. Desharnais and Forbort are both #6. I would not want a 3rd pairing made up of the two of them. Really wish we were able to sign Matt Roy and move Myers down to the third pair.

All I know is its about time we have a competent GM that's not over paying players on July 1st. I'm honestly really happy with the signings that were made. I think Debrusk has a lot more to offer and playing with Petey should hopefully help both of them out. I saw how Hughes was very happy we signed Sherwood since he was such a pest during the Preds series. Gets cushy buyout from Canucks, gets decent contract with Panthers (double dip), wins the friggin SC, then now has what ... a 4 yr contract with the Leafs (and still double dipping from Canucks). Although I think buyouts, you get it all at once, is that right?
Oh to be a avg D man who gets a big contract one time ... OEL should be sending Christmas present to Benning every year.

The contract was signed by the Coyotes not Benning and I guess you can now say Utah is also paying him on top of the Canucks since the retained a bit of money when he was traded to the Canucks. It's crazy to think even tho the leafs are only paying him 3.5 hes still making close to 8 mill because of the buy out LOL

Yeah, Benning's trade for OEL to play for our Canucks was Dim Jim's way to get rid of one player in Loui Eriksson for a dud of a D man.
OEL's stats for his two seasons with the Canucks:
2021-2022: 29 points, +5.
2022-2023: 22 points, -24.
The only bright spot of that OEL trade was getting a good forward in Garland.
A $19.3 million US buyout of OEL.

and that good forward in Garland only came out last year, hopefully this year he plays just as good

that's why GMs went balls to the walls with these UFA contracts. they know the cap will continue to go up so I guess they don't mind making what seems like mistakes right now.
makes me extra grateful that Canucks management isn't falling into this trap. If our window to win is the next 4-5 years (perhaps longer) then we'll be in good position to make bigger signings/trades down the line rather than he tied down by poorly aging contracts.
one can hope anyways...

And GM goes ball to the wall because they are pressured to win NOW ... who knows if they'll last 1 or 2 or 3 yrs or get fired ... let the next GM deal with the bad contract.

that's why I absolutely hated Benning. his last deals weren't about making the team better in the long run, it was about saving his job. the job he had fucked up so badly for years already...

I believe it's quite the opposite of a lump sum you get paid 2/3 of the remaining salary already twice the remaining time on the contract to. So OEL had what 4 years left? Then he would be paid 2/3 what we owed him over 8 years and I think it's even less money if they're under a certain age.

tbh, at the given time, everything was great, except the price paid and the contract length, just he became a huge dud under whatever sytem the canucks had deployed after 2 coaches

So I bought a few playoff tickets through Ticketmaster, nothing special, couple lower bowl games and I got transferred an upper bowl game
This woman has been calling me from the Canucks a couple times and I’ve always been busy so I told her it’s a bad time. She’s finally reached out via email and she’s offering what is basically a concierge service for the Canucks to me? Lol
Dunno if these are paid agents or what but she said if I need tickets, interested in seasons etc. contact her directly? Kinda weird

The Canucks and VPD need to do something to protect DeBrusk and his partner from a deranged “fan.”
Apparently, the Bruins banned this psycho bitch from TD Garden. Boston police were also involved at the time Jake played for that team.

During his tenure with the Boston Bruins, DeBrusk faced troubling attention from a fan who was ultimately banned from TD Garden to keep her away from him and his partner, Mia.
This fan, Jan, has now reappeared on social media platform X, expressing plans to follow DeBrusk to Vancouver.
Also @Canucks she has admitted that the Bruins had her banned and that the Boston Police Department had to get involved. She threatens Jake & and his gf Mia like ‘Why does she deserve protection,' lots of bad karma coming her way» and ‘Jake will pay for it'

That's a SERIOUS stalker who will follow him to another city in another country. Debrusk prob thought ... 'Finally, I'm getting out of Boston and this cray cray, gone girl, psycho fan ...'.
There might be some possibility or reason for Canadian government banning her if she has a record of stalking and/or restraining order.

Agreed ... all of the good $850K, $2-4M AAV contracts won't be remembered if the $11.6M AAV one doesn't perform to expectation.
I love Silovs and thought he played well in the playoffs but let's not forget he had fewer than 10 NHL games under his belt before being thrown to the wolves. So I think $850k/year is fair.

DeSmith was an absolute bargain last year... Silovs is a bargain as a back-up now... like the pay I think matches his experience level, but we know he's pretty damn good and to have a Vezina calibre starting goalie and a super solid almost carried us past the Oilers back-up signed together for ~$6M... that's quite a bit less than most teams are paying for just a starter.

see how heathy the front line goalies are this year if we even see Silovs on the ice..
as a back up goalie that's real money.

Especially at a time where it looks like goalie contracts are on the rise again. For a bit of time there goalie contracts were getting lower especially as teams starting doing more tandems.

That's pretty wild. Looking at the highest paid goalies in the league Carey Price and Segei Bobrovsky at 10.5 and 10 respectively but those are old contracts and crazy overpayment even at the time. If you look at the next 3 which are more recent you've got Vasilevskiy, Hellebuyck, and Sorokin at 9.5, 8.5 and 8.25 and that should be closer to the bar that has been set for the tier 1 goalies.

Always this, I rather a cool 1 point per game for 80-90 points but being hot in the playoffs. Hopefully, it's a one off and he has gained the experience to be much better next time. The time is now we don't have much time to fuck around .
