I'd say you have to be good (and lucky) at picking your partner - if you pick well then things can turn out a lot better in the end. On the late stage of life side it makes a huge difference to quality of life if you have a solid partner. Bonus points if you have a good relationship with your kids. If those two are true then you're living large in the last 30 years of life.

ok, I'll share this story.

I was part of a new group of friends (sports related) and developed interest in one of the girls. Made it super obvious I was interested, kept getting the cold shoulder. Eventually, something benign happened and this girl actually pulled me aside one day to demand an apology from me. For the sake of the group and being the bigger person, I did. I had a great time dancing back in the days. Given i'm asian it's hard to compete when every dude were 4 inches taller and all girls were flocking to all these white guys.
