Anyone has any update on their investment?

I am still holding my TSM that I bought at 19.83. And the BABA that I bought off my in-law (he used to work for Alibaba, and had about 1000 shares... so I asked him to not sell the stock and I would give him cash for them) is doing nicely. I bought them just a bit under the first day closing price... about $93.

Been taking advantage of the volatility and flipping Canadian telcos. I'm still thanking my lucky stars that I wasn't holding oil and gas stocks last month even though it was a huge part of my holdings in the first half of the year.

Haven't posted for a while.. but I've been doing the couch potato strategy (with my own style of asset allocation). 60% in on VTI (vanguard total stock exchange). Bought a LOT in late 2012 for 70$/share and currently sitting at 118$/share (CAD$) in my account... with quarterly USD dividend as well!

It's a nice ETF ... not much volatility holds over 3500 stocks and I finally stopped watching that garbage known as financial news!

If anyone interested... look up "Canadian couch potato", your life will be changed.

VTI - the price is actually listed as USD on the stock exchange - I just listed my "buy prices" as reflected on my bank statement (which is in CAD). Dividends are paid in USD (tip2: if you are purchasing in a non-registered account you'll get charged foreign withholding taxes, this can be avoided in RRSP only .. not TFSA)

If you want the CAD equivalent, you can purchase this.. it's exactly the same fund as VTI, except you can purchase it in CAD dollars on the exchange without bank foreign exchange fees:
https://www.vanguardcanada.ca/indivi...tm?portId=9551

more info on VTI:
https://personal.vanguard.com/us/fun...FundIntExt=INT

The CAD listed symbol charges a slightly higher MER, and withholding taxes are kind of embedded into the fund when they distribute their dividends.

-happy that I bought shares of Sierra Wireless (T.SW) for my TFSA. Their Q3 earnings report was awesome! Earnings up 27.6% compared to Q3 from 2013. Stock price is up more than 7 bucks from yesterday.

Good call.

I decided to sell off my positions in AAPL and slam BABA. glad I did!

Sold my 3000 shares in INFN today at 13.76. Average cost for the 3000 shares was 7.21.

I think the price is a bit too high now. It's probably better to take some profit. Although should have done it sooner, it was over 14 just a week ago.

It's a great stock IMO. I have bought and sold it many times through the years. But the price now is just a bit too much.

I just use RBC... $9.95 per transaction.

There are cheaper places out there, but just for convenience sake of linking all my accounts together.

sorry if this isn't the right thread, but i am a total noob at this.

i had some options that were expiring and i set a limit to sell at $78.00. today, it reached a high of 78.20 so i went into my account and now the pending exercise says it is filled.

does it mean that it sold? and i know this might be dependent on who you deal with, does it take a few days before the cash shows up in the stock account (not bank account)?

I have a TFSA setup too. But with the allowable contribution each year, I can hardly buy anything. I have one stock that's purchased by the TFSA fund, but that's it.

I wanted to short SMF @ $3.70 but RBC didn't let me. Can anyone shed some light?

"When trades are rejected for short sales, insufficient margin is not the only reason why such trades can be rejected. In the case of a short sale, you are borrowing shares from the firm's inventory to sell on the open market.

For instance, our record shows that your short sell order today from 9:50am Eastern was rejected as there was an insufficient number of shares available in our inventory."

You just answered yourself. There are in sufficient shares available for you to short. Or not enough shares for you to borrow to sell.
