I left the sepia tone and heavy sharpening for effect on this set. Without either, I felt the photos didn't have the feeling/aura I was going for.

I like the 2nd batch the best, some really nice shots. I think the editing is somewhat lacking, there is a lot of ghosting around poles and what not, and uneven colours.
Picture #2 shows it alot.
I really like picture #4, very good composition and angle. You might want to try photoshop and get the light spot out (if you dont have photoshop, i can try to help you out and get the spot out)
I also like this picture because the noise is alot less apparent compared to some of the others.

Is the noise a result of over-sharpening?

Any tips on how to use photoshop without going overboard? I think I go too far with the sharpening, contrast and saturation tools.

Any thoughts on composition as well? I know I have to weed out the signs, posts etc. I'm shooting with an XT + 10-22mm lens most of the time. Would appreciate your guys' input.

Yep. WB is way off.

Did you play with the shadows/highlights feature? If so, maybe cut it down a bit so that you won't get those outlines around poles and whatnot.

The picture quality is OK, but if your looking for feedback, then your composition needs alot of work lol. Need to get that car out of the garage and park it somewhere interesting!

Maybe you guys can help me out here, I like to come in the photography forum just to look at all of your pics. There are some great photographers.

I have been into photography on and off for quite a while mostly film, digital for the last little while.

I need help post processing and getting the color I want.

I want to post this picture in hopes that maybe someone can tweak it and tell me what they did, or just tell me if its inherently poorly exposed? Any help would be appreciated.

I know its not the most exciting picture, it was more for a record of my daily beaters progress :)

if you shot it in raw, just play with the white balance until you get the results you want....I'm not really sure what else to say. if you are looking for more "colour" in the picture, try putting up the saturation by about +20 or +30 and see if that helps to get the look you are going for.

I guess I was hoping for more 'pop' somehow. I can't seem to ever get it. I have tried Adjusting Levels, Hue and Saturation etc in CS3.

If anybody still shoots film around here, I am looking for the Fuji Velvia or Kodakchome Extra Color look.

I like that fake, "the world is oh so beautiful and colorful" look that that those films gave and my Nikon D70 and Imac can't seem to give it to me, I know they have it in them I just have to figure out how.

Personally, I think your composition is boring. The subject is centered, and in addition to that, there's nothing exciting going on, except for the fact that the wheels are turned. You might be able to get away with either one of those issues on their own, but together, I think they kill the image!

When shooting cars, try and play with angles! The subject will never change, so the setting, and interpretation are the only things that are going to change.

I didn't shoot film long enough to experience the differences between film types, but I have a relative idea, based on the response you gave.

Here is what I've come up with:

In short:

1. Rotate image to get it straighter, than it was.

2. Crop

3. I always check to see what Photoshop says the coloring should be like for an image, in most cases, it's off... but this can yield interesting results, and in this image's case, it added a bit more in the red tonal range... adding to what I feel is more what I was accustomed to with the films that I used when I shot 35mm. I did this by hitting Ctrl+Shift+B, or by going to the Image > Adjustments > Auto Color option.

4. Simulate DOF (Depth of Field) to mirror that of a shorter lens. (Seperate your subject from the background when you're taking a portrait. it doesn't have to be as heavy as I've made it, but... in most cases, there should be some element of seperation, whether it be by contrast, or DOF. I did this by masking the layer to allow the car to stay in focus. (select everything but the car, and hit the 'quick mask' button on the Layer's palette while the selection is active)

5. Duplicate the main layer, and change its type to 'Overlay', this will give you the ripe colors you want, while maintaining a pretty high margin of contrast, I feel that's important to automotive photography.

6. Burn and dodge the important details. In this case, I bruned the shadows in your headlamps, to show a bit more depth, I also Dodged your VW emblem, to make it stand out like it should.

Now I did this quickly, and I didn't take the time to modify what's in the rear windscreen in the car, because I am in a bit of a rush, and I also wasn't too careful with the selection of the car.
