All four of my wisdom teeth were growing in sideways. I had a specialist remove my bottom two teeth. It was quick and painless. I ate McDonalds the next day, LOL. Meanwhile for my top teeth, I had my regular dentist remove them. The process was the same though.
Both times my gums healed within 3-4 days.

Upper wisdom teeth usually don't hurt after and recovery is quick but the bottom ones hurt because their usually impacted and embedded in your gum and the dentist basically has to cut into the gum and basically break your tooth to remove it.
Just make sure you follow the instructions your dentist gives you after the removal because the last thing you want is a dry socket.

Go to an Oral Surgeon, not your normal dentist.
Call Dr. Gerald Wittenberg, 604 821 0787.
He's awesome, and has VERY reasonable rates and has offices in Vancouver and Richmond.
My friend used him. She had 4 teeth pulled, went with IV, had no pain, didn't need drugs and was able to eat steak the day after.
On that recommendation, I used him as well a few months ago. I got all 4 teeth pulled, went through IV sedation, woke up with a bit of numbness, had no pain over the next few days, didn't use a single T3 that they gave me, and went for AYCE hotpot the night after with very few issues. I paid $1800.

bumping this as well.
to the guys that went under was it worth the 1800-2k?
my teeth hasn't erupted yet , so im still on the fence. i also dont want any dental students screwing around in there - too much at risk
to the ppl that went the local anesthetic route - did it hurt as bad?

To be honest, I think it was worth it (well my medical plan back then covered 80% of it so that helped a lot); but even without coverage, it's a better idea to go with a surgeon instead of a dentist.
And for me, it's best not to know wtf they are doing while they were cutting thru my gum and extracting my wisdom teeth.
It hurt after the drugs wore off... but I just kept taking T3 everyday for about a week. The sleep pattern was messed but oh well, better that than being in pain wide awake.

there are dentists who are surgeons (dental surgeons maxilofacialists) a lot of dentists went for the same training too while they were practicing (maxillofacial schooling takes forrreeeeevvvveer thats why most dentists don't bother and just get extra training afterwards for specific procedures)
never realized so many ppl had their wisdom teeth pulled...
mine are all in and fine

if one has 80% dental coverage are oral surgeons covered under that or does it vary from plan to plan?

I got my wisdom teeth pulled out before I turned 19. Didn't cost me a penny. My dentist suggested that I should get it pulled because they are usually the 4 that gets cavities the most (cuz its so hard to get at)

^ shouldnt need to take any days off except for the day youre getting it done. i got mine pulled back in highschool and went to school the next day. the only gauze that was in my mouth was the ones they put in right after it was done. couple hours after that i just pulled them out. from then on i didnt use any gauze cause it just didnt feel right.

i got the other 2 pulled yesterday at my dentist. Ony cost me 270 bucks for 2 cause they were already growing out. Took him maybe 15 minutes. I didnt even realize it afer they came out cause i coudl feel nothing from the needles they injected me with. 2 hours later I was back to smoking all kinds of herbs (you shouldnt because of risking dry socket but if you know what you're doing..) and 6 hours later i was back to chewing food delicately. fun times!

Keep in mind the Oral Surgeons set their own prices, while dentists go by a guide rate.
I had an upper and lower (impacted) removed by a surgeon under local. The upper came out no problem but because the lower one was jammed up so tight against the tooth it was hitting, he had to crack it into several pieces, pull them out and make sure the hole was clean before stitching it up. IIRC cost was around $700.

actually, the reason i asked is because i had 4 tooth extractions already for my braces (still have them on - the best investment i've ever made!). i had to shove gauze on four molar areas to reduce/contain the bleeding for half the day. i had to constantly keep changing them because it would get soaked instantly as there was so much blood dripping out. it was not a pleasant experience and swallowing/burping blood was fuckin nasty as hell. i was wondering if getting your wisdom teeth out will be just as bad.

ie. guide fee (regular dentist) = $500, coverage (@ 80%) = $400, oral surgeon rate = $700, you still pay $300 out of pocket.

i know getting braces is not usually covered by your dental plan when you're an adult since it's classified to be a cosmetic enhancement. if you're a child, usually the parent's coverage will cover a certain percentage but it's different for adults. however, when i had my tooth extractions done it was covered by my basic dental plan and didn't pay a cent. i was wondering how different tooth extraction is from getting your wisdoms pulled?

In those cases your dentist would then recommend you an oral surgeon... he would have to cutt your gums open and cut open your alveolar crest(jaw bone) to pry them out. If your a man you can do it without any anesthetics and endure the excruciating pain, but yea good luck with that; or you can go ahead and pay the extra money to get the anesthetics for about $300/ half hour on top of the $1200/ hour your paying already. Imo it's worth putting in the extra money to get the anesthetics because i doubt you'll be able to endure the pain.
I didn't get mine pulled yet, but i am expecting to get it done withing the next couple years because my 2 lower wisdoms are completely impacted.

yeah sounds just as bad as wisdom teeths LOL i didnt like putting guaze in so i just let it bleed just kept rinsing my mouth with cold water. and since i got 4 done at once its bleeding from four places. pretty sure it stopped bleeding after like 4 hours. only one of the four wisdom tooth came out intact the other 3 he had to crack into pieces. they gave me the intact one but i dont know where i put it. pretty cool keeping a big ass tooth.

the fee guide is what it is...a guide..dentist can charge whatever they wish to charge..not just surgeons. The majority of the dentist charges more than what fee guides suggests..unless you are paying everything out of pocket.
as for the guy asking how many day to take off, you don't need to take any days off...the bleeding usually stops after 2 hours if you chewing on the gauze. If you decide to use the antibiotics prescribed to you and you fill it, make sure you finish it all.
it's pretty interesting because some people are now born without wisdom tooth...evolution is awesome. If it doesnt grow out impacted or crowding your other teeth and you have good oral hygiene, it's not necessary to be pulling em out.
