3 for data and local calls. Get it at the airport 3 kiosk and buy refills anywhere throughout the city.
People for calls back to Canada. Kiosk is on the right to 3 at the airport.

Go to the departures area to find 3 and People.

City sight-seeing:

TST promenade/Avenue of Stars. Be there at 8pm for the nightly laser show
The Peak
If you travel down the island, take the tram at least once. Especially good if you can get a seat in the front on the top floor.
People will say star ferry but I think it's gross. Lots of pollution on the harbour, and combined with the waves you will probably be sick the rest of the day
Nan Lian Garden (Diamond Hill) and Chi Lin Nunnery next to it

Must see: Hong Kong Museum of History (if you are interested in HK culture itself). Free on Wednesdays. If you have never been to HK before, it might be a good idea to go here first, then you'll have context for the rest of your trip

Touristy shopping for crap: Stanley market, Ladies Market (Mong Kok), Temple Street Market (Jordan)

You can spend half a day easy in MK checking out all the different areas... Starting at Prince Edward you can see the goldfish area, fa yuen street market (cheap clothes, toys, etc. Good deals here if you do't care about brand), bird market, flower market, , etc, and some fantastic restaurants.

Outdoorsy stuff/walking: Mui Wo (rent a bike), Tai O (stay in a fishing village)

Go check out the horse races at Happy Valley or Sha Tin

Go to Sai Kung for a walk and for seafood. Or go to the very end and rent a BBQ pit (all you can eat IIRC)

Make a day trip to Macau, if you like casinos. The food is one of a kind - highly recommend Fernando's on Hak Sa beach (very south). Watch a show like Cirque or see if there are any concerts

You can probably do ALL that in 5 days I think. For more info: GOOGLE

Going to HK this week for 3 days.

Where can I get a microSIM for my smartphone?

Also, does anyone know where I can rent a DSLR? Or anyone currently in HK that wouldn't mind lending me theirs?

P.S. Any cultural shit in HK like temples that I should see? I don't need to do any shopping, just eating and sightseeing.

butao on causeway, i thought, was better, but of course a lot harder to get a seat. when i was in hk, i was staying near times square so i would usually just head to butao (well before noon or late evening) and if there was a lineup, i'd just go to ippudo. that being said, i've never had that amount of meat in ramen as seen in skinnypup's picture.
If Ippudo in Seoul is any indication of the one in HK, it sucks.

You can pick one up at a 7-11 but if you need customer service to help, you might want to drop into an actual carrier store instead. They are everywhere. I recommend Three as a good prepaid sim with data.

For temples, check out the Chi Lin nunnery i listed above. Another big one in Kowloon is Wong Tai Sin. If the weather was better you might actually walk there if you wanted to check out a regular old urban residential area. not that interesting sight wise, but i like to see everything when i travel, even the mundane.

anyway You can also check out Che Kung temple in sha tin. IIRC it's the one with pinwheels everywhere, so that's neat to see. It has a huge outdoor area for burning joss sticks, so they burn HUGE ones. My wife's grandparents are at Man Mo temple in sheung wan so we go there a lot, and i see tons of tourists whenever I go. I don't think it's particularly interesting for tourism though.

You can check out this list http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Places_of_worship_in_Hong_Kong
It's customary but not necessary to donate when you visit a temple

Yes but not as much anymore. They are mostly gathered around mong kok but they are harder to spot since they don't dress as gangster anymore. I've seen quite a bit of gang fights during late meals outdoors especially after drinking. If you really want to witness one, you can start a fight lol, just say lei bin lun dou ar, tor ma ar lun yeung. Guaranteed to find some popping out of unusual places and gather for a "diu lei" seminar.

I remember going to one of those shady malls where they used to sell pirated DVDs, and the guy in front of me on the escalator was carrying a lead pipe... Guess he was going to 'pek yau'

I was staying at a really crappy motel-type place in Wan Chai many years ago, woke up to a bunch of yelling. Looked out the window from the 3rd floor and there were about 30-40 guys going at it for quite a while, then they started to splinter off into the alleys. Almost exactly like 古惑仔 style

Another time was at a rave, walked outside and there was a big gathering of over a hundred guys facing each other, they formed 2 groups with a gap of about 10-feet between them ... my retarded friend decided to walk BETWEEN them and I had to drag his ass back and we took off before they started to "pek yau".

When I went, I stayed at The Mariner Club and YMCA Salisbury, both in TST. The rates in July were about 100-120 a night, so if that's your idea of cheap then those two places were pretty good for the money. The Mariner Club had free breakfast, nicer rooms, but the beds were rock hard. YMCA had your typical "Best Western" type room, though the beds were very comfy. Both places walk out into a MTR station entrance (TST).

I'll let you know how I adapted in a couple months...
