I have a file server that I stream movies, pictures and music to a modded XBOX with XBMC loaded on it. It does a fantastic job as a media extender. I have been playing with the PS3 for a while now and I set up Windows Media Player 11 sharing as well as TVersity on my file server and so far its been OK.

TVersity seems to play more of my movies (which is weird considering all my movies are XVID/AVI's) but the start up time is very slow due to the encoding. Windows Media Player is a lot quicker to start and will actually pass through the 5.1 audio stream but it is limited to the type of files it can play.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a better interface/program that will play a majority of the movie formats...namely .mkv's, pass through AC3, and is not bogged down by the encoding process? I know I am asking a lot but I everytime I CANT stream some video on my PS3 i find myself missing my XBMC more and more.
I'm using Nero MediaHome and its startup is faster than Tversity. It can also play it all including MKV and 5.1 audio.

The PS3 is very finicky in what it plays and what it doesn't, so naturally, some MKV files will play, while some won't.
There isn't one reason why some work and some don't, but here's something you can do to increase your chances. Download a program called: mkv2vob and convert your MKV file to a VOB (a full length HD movie will be done in about 3 minutes, as it's not really decoding -> re-encoding). You will lose your subtitles (unless it's hard coded into the movie)

The other minor annoyance with Nero MediaHome is it needs Nero Scout to work, which is an indexing program. So it's an extra program that needs to be run in the background, and the initial index takes a long time if you have lots of media files. If the file doesn't get indexed, it won't show, so it has to be done.

PS: movies encoded with AC3 5.1 seem to work better. Movies encoded with AAC appear to have a higher failure rate.

I dont understand

if you have the mkv files on your computer, as well as a big enough LCD tv to enjoy the PS3, why not just hook up the pc with the LCD TV?

I did that, works great and no slingbox hassel

My PC is nowhere near my living room, so that's why i'd rather stream it over the network. I'm in the process of building a media PC from scrap parts, but I'm short a video card with HDMI and soundcard that can connect to my 5.1. But eventually, it'll be connected to my TV directly.

Don't expect anything other than PC's to ever be able to play MKV files.

I guess 'never say never' is appropriate, but I doubt it'll happen.

it would be awesome to see sony come out with their own "achievement points" and be able for us to redeem the points for movies, music, games, and etc.

That would be fucking brilliant!!!
This means free games at times, but they'd capture way more players this way!

Yeah, the NAmerican 80GB PS3 for MGS4 bundle will be exactly the same as the Motorstorm ones.

Side note here..I'm looking for a made-in-Japan DS3..my friend's coming back in 2 weeks from Taiwan and he can get it for $50 but it's made in China.

SO does anyone know how much they will be selling for at Canadian stores..and whether it's made in Japan or China?

I'm looking for a Japanese one for $50..$60 max..so ordering online thru playasia isn't what i want.

My Japanese Sixaxis > my Chinese Sixaxis..which is why i'm picky
