Superglue or epoxy might be best. Just don't overdo it.

*sob* pulled my 40D out of the camera bag the other day and it wouldn't power on. Tried three different batteries, plus the battery grip with AAs. Made sure all doors were closed. Cleaned the contacts. Tried a different card. Replaced the backup battery. NOTHING.

Is there somewhere in town that can fix this, or is it gonna end up going off to Canon? Or is it maybe a simple fix tip I can try myself (I'm not averse to disassembling the camera to a superficial degree)?

Yeah, the little CR2016 in the side of the battery compartment. Removing and/or replacing it was one of the suggestions I found on other forums.

Was it stored in a high humidity area?

You might try Vancam or Camtex, but I'm not sure if I trust those guys.

Nope - it was just sitting in the living room in its bag... probably about a week between uses. Worked fine previously; brought it in, set it in the big chair... week later, took it out, and... nothing. Living room is lower floor on the north side of the townhouse, so it stays pretty cool.

Well, Kerrisdale Cameras recommends VanCam... I've been dealing with Kerrisdale for a long time and trust them, so... guess I'll give VanCam a call.

Does anybody recommend VanCam to do repair on a sigma lens? I'm too cheap to ship mine across the country just to get a quote.

Vancam is probably better than Camtex. I still don't trust them after what I've seen and heard from clients.

My camera dropped dropped front first. and now my nikkor 12-24 F4 the UV filter on the front 1 edge of it dented into the filter thread and is stuck. Other than that dent the filter glass is still fine and intact doesn't affect the image quality at all and the lens itself is still working perfectly. but the dust build up in between the lens and the filter is getting pretty dusty. Where should I go to get the filter removed so I can buy a new one and clean the lens.

Try taking it off first yourself by wearing rubber dish gloves. If that doesn't work, you might try taking it yourself to Nikon's repair centre in Richmond. Bent filter threads suck.

Welp, finally got it in to Vancam... they found the problem: an internal screw had fallen out (probably vibrated loose) and fallen against the DC converter board, shorting it out, requiring its replacement. Total cost: $130 labor, $75 parts.

HEY CANON! DO YOU KNOW WHAT F***ING THREAD LOCKER IS?? TWO CENTS WORTH OF THE STUFF WHEN YOU BUILT THIS DAMN THING WOULD HAVE SAVED ME A $200+ REPAIR BILL AND MONTHS OF DOWNTIME.

Worst part is, the technician said this isn't an uncommon problem... to ANY brands.

Anyone got some direct contact info for someone who matters at Canon? Their website doesn't even have an email address, just "contact forms" to fill out. SOMEONE needs a verbal bitchslapping.

AAAaaaaand of course, Vancam only takes cash or debit, not credit, so my camera will have to wait for payday... *sigh*

Just wanted to do a quick review of Camtex

Recently i broke the LCD protector on my Canon T2i, was recommended by Broadway Cameras to go to them and see what they can do.

It was a relatively small shop, located on the 2nd floor of a building. Once we walked in, we were greeted and then we asked them if they could replace the broken piece. They told me that usually they do some BS inspection/checkup on all of their customer's cameras and that would be 39.99 before they could give me a quote on my camera. I told them that i only want the screen to be replaced, none of the BS that comes with it.

He tells me to wait while he checks for the part im looking for, comes back after a minute or so and tells me that hes not sure if they have it or not, he may have to order it in. I tell him to check if he has it again because i want one day turnaround, again he goes to the back for a couple minutes and says he has to order it in.

At this point im ready to leave and order it online and DIY it. I tell him to order the part in and call me when he has it in store. He asks me if im taking the camera with me or leaving it with them, i tell him im taking it then bring it back when he has stock. He gives me a weird look then tells me to hold on for a second, he goes to the back and then magically he has the part ready for me. I ask if i can see the part and he gives me another weird look, then tells me "I have the part in right now, are you going to let me do it or not?" I give him the go ahead and he tells me it'll be done in around 2 hours.

I leave to go somewhere for the 2 hours, he calls me within 30 minutes telling me the screen is not a perfect fit and there is a tiny gap along the edges. I didn't care cause i needed the camera ASAP, i pick it up when the 2 hours is up and sure enough its finished. We pay and they dont even give me a reciept. I ask for one and he goes to type one up.

Kinda sketch business but im satisfied. They did get it done in the 2 hour time frame they promised.

This is before

And these are after,

You can see its not an OEM replacement and you can see the little gap, but it doesnt affect anything and i'm gonna use my camera till it dies so no resell value is affected. Or i could buy an OEM and replace it again if it gets scratched along the way.

Has anyone sent their Sigma lens back east for calibration?

I'm currently thinking about driving to London Drugs where I bought it, and having them send my 30mm for calibration (among other things) along with my 50D. They say turn-around is 4-6 weeks, and even though I'd be without my primary camera for that long, I have access to a XSi during that time.

From what I gather online, lenses usually come back better than pre-calibration, which is fairly exciting to me since mine underexposes once in a while and occasionally hunts for focus during the day. It just sucks to be without my main camera for that long.

On an unrelated note: does anyone know of any local Sigma authorized service centers?

Sigma has to go back to Gentec in Toronto. They told you 4-6 weeks? Unless they've revamped their repair centre, expect 4 months.

Thanks for the info. I called before I sent the lens via LD. The guy at Gentec said 30 day turn around, then what's likely 2 weeks shipping RT. If they fix the mild focusing/underexposure issue, it'll be worth the wait I guess.
