i bought a cheap Hoodman loupe for my rig. having problems seeing my lcd in the sun, and it magnifies as well.

i like that i can flip it out of the way, which i'll need to do switching between birds in flight and stationary shots. i can also detach it and wear it on a lanyard. i'll have to use Live View more, but i have 3 batteries that came with my camera, which i hardly use anyways.

What's a good zoomie to replace the 18-55 on a Canon that won't break the budget?

I was thinking of just getting a 28mm or 35mm prime, but haven't found any good deals.

Also, where's a place locally to buy filters?

Depends on if you want to buy a new lens or a used lens.

the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 (old version), used is a decent lens.

If you want something faster, the Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 (non-VC) is faster, but the range is shorter.

If you want to buy it new though, the Tamron is around $500 new on Amazon.com

The Canon 17-85mm is a decent lens as well - and should be readily available on the used market.

The Canon 15-85mm is awesome.

What filters were you looking for?

^^^ he never wrote what his budget is. It's all relative - I have clients who balk at the price of a 50mm f1.4 and others who don't bat an eye handing over their AmEx for a $40,000 Hasselblad.

In addition, lenses barely depreciate. Spending $1000 on a receiver that is worth $100 in 3 years is not the same calculation as spending $1000 on a lens that is worth $850 in 3 years.

I bought my 15-85mm for $649 + tax from PhotoExpert brand new and sold it for $525 after 2 years. It really only cost me $200 to use for those 2 years; I would much rather do that then buy a crappy $300 lens and sell it for $100 2 years later.

Canon EF-S 15-85mm IS USM Lens - $425 (Cloverdale/Surrey)

You can easily own that lens for free for 2 years, you will easily get $425 for it if it's in the same good shape.

How's the Tamron 17-50mm VC as opposed to the non-VC version?

Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 VC

Budget is about $400.. so it looks very attractive. Found some used on CL for even less.

I guess I should've stated that I'm looking for a zoomie with better low light ability, so the 15-85mm is kind of meh unless the IS really makes that much of a difference.

Optics look great compared to the 18-55mm kit lens that I'm using right now - Tamron 17-50 2.8 vs Canon 18-55 3.5-5.6 (kit lens) shootout

I have the Tamron 17-50 F2.8 VC model. It's built well. I find the AF a bit slow so don't expect to use it for action shots. Low light should be fine. The non VC is a bit sharper but VC will help you keep more shots in low light unless you're planning on using a tripod. What Ken Rockwell says is true about the jumping frame for the VC but it's never bothered me since I prefocus all my shots anyways. I've owned mine since 2009 and I now have to send it in for warranty due to unnaturally stiff manual focus ring and stiff zoom at the 17mm end like there's resistance.

I would definitely consider the 15-85mm, used, as well - if your budget is around $400. I've gone the route of the F2.8 lenses before - and the fact of the matter is - you won't be shooting at F2.8 most of the time. Your depth of field is too shallow, and the lens isn't in the optimal sharpness range.

The Tamron is supposedly decent at F2.8, and like Mikroft said, the non-VC is actually sharper - but you're still going to want to stop it down a bit. The 15-85 will be sharper throughout the range and will generally be a better walk around lens...

Just something to think about.

That said - if you get the Tamron at a good price used, it could be worth it just to play around with. If you don't like it - sell it.

one more thing to add...

this is a great lens - sharp, has a great OS (IS) on it. I own it, I love it.

Sigma 17 50mm F2 8 EX DC OS HSM Canon or Nikon Mount New USA Warranty Roberts | eBay

Except I bought it for $650 a year ago, this is a great deal.

I ended up buying the Tamron 18-50mm VC.

Used, but everything in box with 4 years of warranty for $325.

Going to go around shooting and test it later.

By the way, where do you guys get your shots printed? I'm decorating my room. I'm looking to make some prints about 30x40cm to frame them in something like this -http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/00175453/

I'm looking for something decent quality. Doesn't have to be great, as long as the detail is there. My original photos will be about 3500x2500 and one that's 3000x2000. Is that good enough for a print of that size? I have no experience with prints.

EDIT: Also, where is a good place to get a filter for a 72mm thread that's also cheap? Is Amazon my best bet?

Just keep in mind that the mat is optimized for a 20cm x 25cm picture - so a 4x5 picture. You may want to factor that in when printing/cropping the picture. Unless you want to frame the picture without a mat.

No I didn't, his prices aren't very good at all - most can be beaten just by calling PhotoExpert and you know that they are an authorized dealer and your warranty will be good.

Anyone looking at the Sony A7/A7R? I'm tempted to get the A7 just to mess around my dad's old Leica M/screw mount lenses.

I impulse purchased a B&W UV and Hoya CPL while I was at BC Cameras today looking for a bag.. If they're opened, can I still return them?

Might just buy filters off this guy - seems like a good deal even though they're used - LOTS of 67mm and 72mm PHOTO FILTERS - Tiffen Hoya & more!

$35 for the Hoya HMC UV-0 seems like a good deal compared to the $80 B&W I bought.. especially since according to this test, the Hoya ranks 1st compared to the same B+W ranked 11th - http://www.lenstip.com/113.4-article...d_summary.html

BTW, any difference between Philippines made and Japan made Hoyas? My CPL is made in the Philippines.
