This was a pretty cool story that combines photography, Christmas and a car :-)

Photographer Surprises Father With Dream Car For Christmas | Fstoppers

There's 2 videos ... one for the story and another for creating the shot:

The dad's reaction was really subdued. He must be a really low-key guy. If my son bought me my dream car, I'd be bouncing off the walls and ripping the thing lol.

Great video though.

Decided to treat myself today with a new lens for my T3i

Also tested it on my way home with my car, this is definitely the look I was going for with the lens but I didn't realize just how far away I have to be from the car to get it all in the shot

Just out of curiosity, what made you choose that lens? Most people would probably get a 50 1.8 and that would let you create a very shallow depth of field if you so chose.

it's mainly just space, before buying the new lens I had an idea of how far I'd have to be away from the car or motorcycle that I was shooting, but once I actually got this 40mm lens I was surprised at how far I found myself from the car and in some cases I wouldn't have the space with a 50mm. ie. car dealership

plus there was a limited amount of space in my camera bag and this 40mm fits in one of the internal side pockets just perfectly.

I personally got it because I got the 40th anniversary bundle for 180 (20 less than the lens itself).

It has a better construction than the nifty (metal mount, much more solid feeling), and on a crop it offers a wider fov (every bit helps with a crop body). It's also smaller than a 1.4x teleconverter, which is a plus. The pancake is SHARP wide open- which is more than I could say about my prior nifty. So even though you're afforded the extra play with dof using the nifty, you're not always guaranteed a usable shot imo.

That said, the focus is slow (same as any non-usm lens). It is however VERY quiet. You can barely hear the STM motor working away which is nice. I personally use it when I don't want to be too conspicuous in a close setting (I know, I know- a dslr is far from inconspicuous, but you can't deny that the 40 is much more discrete than pretty much any other lens), or when 50 is too long. I have a 17-40, but it's too slow to use without flash indoors in most cases.

While a very nice lens, I'll probably sell it to fund a 35 1.4. I really only use it when 50 is too long indoors, and in those instances I think a 35 1.4 would be more ideal anyways. But $$$, so I'm using the 40 in the meantime.

Didn't end up with the Otus... the seller decided to keep it as he was "spoiled" by the sharpness.

Sigma 50 1.4 Art announced.

I love my current non-Art iteration, so it's pretty hard to think about upgrading without any mention of MSRP on the new one. But if this at least matches the 35 Art, this will be an awesome lens!

Probably still too high up in the 4 figs for me.

Only time I would be able to afford that lens is if it fell off the back of a truck.

If you always have a lens on your camera - use the caps on both ends.

Am I the only one who finds that guy annoying?

The information in his video is ok though.

Kai can be pretty annoying, but I don't mind his videos. More entertaining than the usual reviews.

That said, sometimes he's got some whack settings when reviewing camera gear sometimes. For example, he'll be outside in broad daylight shooting 800-1600 ISO.

Here it is...

I guess for its price, Leica really spared nothing... even the lens pouch that came with it feels/smells like real leather.

^I honestly don't know why they didn't just do this from the start. It's not a good look for a company fighting for market share with Canon and the many mirrorless companies.

The whole d610 release was just so bad- release a new model in just about a year with minor enhancements, and ignore the real issue at hand.

Softbox of doom has arrived.

Actually, its the Westcott Apollo 28" softbox. Its actually a clever design, it opens and collapses like an umbrella. My Radio Popper and SB600 are inside.
