just go for a dSLR if you're going to spend $1000 on a P&S, the difference is worth the money.

you won't regret it

What camera to look for doing night shots.

Okay i have a question. I want a digi cam a reasonably priced (about $400+/-) where i can do nice shots of the city at night. Example like taking a shot of the city from BBy mountain or something.

What should i be looking for?

Like is there a certain way of reading specs/numbers that will indicate that it's good for nightlight shots?

TIA

One preferably with manual options. "M", "S", or "TV" function will all let you control the shutter. You want one with a minimum of 30 secs probably . Canon A610/20 i believe has these options.

These are in different price brackets now due to the discontinuation for the current Panasonic lineup. Lumix is now 449.99 at LD Sd550 still like 579 or somethin like that

Actually i found one/lots on Amazon.com for a pretty good price. From the states though. A lot of ppl gave positive reviews. The only thing i don't dig about the SD550 is that they don't have the anti-shake thingy.

Kota, pick the one with the bigger sensor...less noise for night shots.

Canon's price usually wouldn't drop
by the time everyone else are having price drops, tehy will come out with new models that keep their price up.

they are the market leaders afterall.

Not looking to spend an arm and a leg but still looking for an improvement over my 1.3Mp cellphone camera

Here's the quality of pictures I'm looking for:

If you are looking to use it for web use only you can get away with a Canon Powershot A75 and up.

If you want to make them into nice posters and stuff, you'd start getting into the SLR's.

Here's the quality of pictures I'm looking for:

i think this picture looks nice NOT because of whatever camera was used to capture it but rather becaseu of the warm sun set lighting. although it has a nice blurred background, so i can assume its not from a digicam?
but i might be wrong.

Hi, I have a rather strange question to ask...

I want to get into photography but I don't want to spend over $500, at least not immediately. Is this possible?

I find taking pictures fun and interesting enough that I want to take it up as a hobby, but I'm not satisfied with the standard "point and shoot" cameras, because I feel really restricted. I want something where I can manually adjust focus at varying distances, take really close up shots without getting blurred images, and have the ability to take good, bright, crisp pictures in darker settings.

I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

thoughts on the Panasonic FZ4? Can't afford DSLR, so should I save up? Or would this be a good way to start? I've got a crappy Minolta Dimage XT right now, with almost no manual controls at all, and a flash that oversaturates my pictures, and the colors aren't the greatest... plus it's very prone to shaky hands.

I'm guessing the FZ4 would be a big upgrade?

Edit: I notice that these point and shooters don't do any iso settings beyond 400. Is this critical? I notice that some of you guys are taking awesome action shots at ISO 1600... I'm guessing this would be useful for action and low light shots?

Also, if i do decide to go DSLR, can I just get a camera and go? There's a lens supplied with it when I buy it right? Could I just stick to that one there?

At the same time, I notice that the DSLRs don't have the optical image stabilizer... so what should I do?!

argh

If you think you'll like doing photography even 2 or 3 years from now, then yeah save up for an SLR. That's what I did and I think it's totally worth it.

You don't necessarily NEED an image stablizer but it sure comes in handy in low-light, handheld situations with stationary subjects. All dSLRs can do ISO1600 with acceptable results and if you have a fast lens (f1.4~f2.8) you probably won't need that feature anyway.

If you're thinking about sports then IS/VR won't help at all.... but if you do wildlife stuff, say if you're using a 600mm lens at 1/100th, taking a shot of a bird 40 feet away from you, then in that case IS would help to get a somewhat blur-free pic.

hmm... tough choice... although 99% of the time I won't have a tripod, so all my shots will be handheld

if you do a lot of handheld, low-light shooting, i.e. near sunset or at night, then it'd be nice to have IS. I still don't think it's a neccessity to have IS on shorter focal lengths lenses but if your budget allows, why not.

I think if u're still unsure about spending money on an SLR, then it'd be better to stick with a P&S, but don't spend 800 bucks on a prosumer because for that money you might as well invest in an SLR.

You can always keep the point and shoot camera even when you get the SLR.... I still have my Canon A40 2mp camera from 4 years ago and it still works perfectly when I just need to take quick snapshots of things or whatever.

For a good P&S camera I'd go for something from Canon.... maybe the A610 or the S2 IS. Fuji makes good P&S cameras as well and they can use ISO1600, probably the only ones that let you do that at the moment. Check out the Fuji S5200 as well.

hey 43ma any advice for me? I'll go over $500 if it's not too insane. I've been looking at the Sony DSC-H1, the Panasonic Lumix FZ5, Fujifilm S5200, and the Canon S2 IS. Any thoughts, or suggestions for what cameras I could add to that list?

edit: i just noticed that you're SFU engineering too. what year are you? =p

a friend of mine is selling his nikon f100 for 450.

price seems right, it's in good condition.

so.. i'm wondering if i should go for it or not

i currently use f717

i use to use pentax SLR cameras then i moved on to digital

i need some encouragements guys
so let's hear it from those film camera users
why do you stick so much to film?

That is a great price for a used F100. If you don't pick it up, I'd like to get it. I'll pay him $451! Haha... No, seriously, if you don't get it, I wil take it off his hands, if it is in good condition.

For colour photography, I use my dSLR, but I still use my film body often for colour slides, B&W film & infrared. I still feel film is superior to digital, but cameras like the Canon 5D, Nikon D2x & Hasselblad ZD are getting closer & closer. The main reason I still like film is that you have a hardcopy of your image in the form of negatives or positives. Digital storage media can be unstable, and I hate the post-processing that you inevitably have to do.
