Between the Panasonic FZ10 and the Sony IS S1, which would you choose?

I'm looking at a budget starter camera to learn to take good pics...

any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Looking to buy a camera...

The old 3.2 megapixel digital camera isnt cutting it for me anymore, but I've always been a big fan of photography.

I really dont want to break the bank entirely, what do you guys suggest looking up? I'm not opposed to buying it off ebay, but I'm not entirely sure what it is that I need. I'm kind of a novice to photography, but if I had a nice camera I would spend a LOT more time taking pictures. I really envy the shots I see on here and elsewhere and I ALWAYS end up seeing something and wishing I had a nice digital....

Would you guys suggest a Digital SLR or is SLR worth having? I was thinking something along the lines of a Canon Digital Rebel or a Nikon D50 maybe if I can find one cheap enough... if you guys have any advice more me or know of some other cameras I should look in to it'd be a big help! Thanks a lot!

a dSLR would run u around 700 used for a old drebel to 1000 for a new D50

theyre both great for entry level

but first consider if u really want a dSLR or not.
you lose video recording ability, the use of the screen as a viewfinder and you have to spend money on zoom lenses and filters

if you're not ready to make the big investment, consider getting super zooms or high end prosumer cams like canon S2 IS, Panasonic FZ30

The review of the panasonic should be posted on friday on dcresource. i'm predicting it will be the best prosumer cam of the year with its mechanical super zoom, fast lens, any angle LCD screen, and image stabilization

take a look at it

I've kind of narrowed it down to a D300 or a D350 from canon, does anyone here use one that could give some feedback for me? I'm an amateur but I'd really like to make photography more of a priority when it comes to my hobbies.... cheaper than modding my car!

I beg to differ.

A decent lens like a 17-40mm L lens can cost you upwards of $800CAD, easily. And it just gets worse and worse as you progress along this "hobby"

Rims and tires alone are more than a nice digital slr and a lens, and you get a lot less use out of them!

hee hee.... u can't really say that....
rims + tires normally around $2000 for 18"?
it can go up to $5000 easily...

camera stuffs...
an ok lens can be $2000 a piece.

So, depends on how u compare them. But, for sure that car stuffs depreciate much more and much faster...

Canon Rebel Xt $1040 (body only)
Nikon D70s $1150 (body only)

+ lens. price varies...

can buy them as a kit, but the lens is not very good, not too bad either.

I bought a used Canon Rebel 300D and I've got no regrets whatsoever. There's not much the camera can't do that a beginner needs. In a few years I might upgrade, but these camera's are really very capable.

Depends on what you are looking for. If small size is your main concern, then the SD500 would probably be the best choice.

If you're looking for other things, like image quality, or zoom range, or extended features, there are other choices to consider...

get the new Fuji F11 with new manual controls, it's replacing the F10 which was a great little camera for taking indoor shots at high ISOs (up to 1600) and the image quality is superb.

The SD500 or the new SD550 is good except that you can't do much with the manual mode if you want to be creative with it.

Another good choice would be the Casio EX750, LOTS of manual features including Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, etc. and it's A LOT cheaper than the Canon SD500 plus everything's FAST - fast AF, no shutter lag, fast operation speed.
