no you don't have to enter anything.

like all current GPS. you should stop and wait for a positive GPS connection, then drive around as you please. if you don't have a signal and start driving, you may never get a signal till you stop.

i went 25 KMS nonstop and never got a signal till i hit a stop sign near my destination.

the TomTom dock has its own built in GPS chip that is superior to the iPhone one. When you dock your phone in it, it actually disables your onboard GPS chip and uses the TomTom one.

hence the high price of the dock

Anyone else find tomtom takes long to get a gps lock and poor gps signal compared to navigon?
The only plus I find is that it loads a lot quicker...

Psykopathik 08-24-2009 06:11 PM

ya tomtom is slow, don't know why, they both use the same resources. poor programming i guess. however i notice it always knows where i am when i turn tomtom on, even tho the screen is grey, my position is pretty accurate initially.

albert116 08-24-2009 08:37 PM

planning to test out tom tom / navigon / igo when i head down to the states in a few days.

so they should work even if i turn off data roaming? i know in theory they don't need data, since the maps are loaded on the phone. But does acquiring and locking down the signal require data? (as i understand the iphone has an agps chip, i am not sure if it requires data or not when acquiring / locking down the signal)

!MiKrofT 08-24-2009 09:24 PM

Sygic is a piece of garbage. Igo is my favourite contender so far. I start it up and by the time I get to my car the signals locked in. The interface is great. No need to really test tomtom as I actually have a tomtom unit in the car.

The iphone's gps will work fine without data. It's a full fledged gps chip. It worked fine when I had data disabled.

the docks looks nice and specific to the iphone but I wouldn't want to leave an expensive dock in my car (as every usually leaves it on their glass)

anyone know when they plan to release it? would it work with navigon and other gps apps?

doubtful if it would work with other gps programs. there are vids on ebay showing the dock. it looks vey plain.

nothing that would make a thief give it a 2nd look. then again, crackheads take anything not welded down. sometimes they even do that.

the GPS chip in your phone works decently well so i couldn't justify buying the dock. as long as your phone has a clear view of the sky vertically, it should work pretty good.

what part of "does not require data" don't you understand? if you are concerned with accidental data charges, use "fake APN" to block all your data. goto www.unlockit.co.nz on your iPhone and follow the on screen prompts.

Are there more than one type of USB cable for the i/Pod/Phone? I've noticed that with one cable I can use the internet tethering with the iPhone, but my other cable will not allow it.

!MiKrofT 08-25-2009 12:56 PM

Weird. All the cables should be the same. Unless some manufacturer skimped out and only connected the voltage lines on the usb cable.

Psykopathik 08-25-2009 02:04 PM

^^yup some are charging only cables, not sync cables. pretty stupid, but i guess some people just want a charging cable only and want to save a few cents.

from a MFG point of view it makes economic sense. however i think they could at least mark the cable "for charging only"

vmette_ 08-25-2009 03:09 PM

I once had an iphone. Now the little bastard doesnt turn on and Apple wont do anything about it. Any suggestions?

RFlush 08-25-2009 03:47 PM

RFlush: i so hunt or teh pyrate b@y ;)

vmette_ 08-25-2009 04:42 PM

Nope, I dont even know what happened to it. I had to replace it with an old motorola for the time being, which is a pretty bad step down if you ask me. Doesnt charge, itunes sees nothing, no lights, nada. Is there any places round here that can fix these things?

Dammit. The cable that came with my iPhone won't work. My Griffin one does.

plenty of places that fix ipods and such. there si one in coquitlam i know of off hand. its on westwood right by lougheed hwy. big sign outside says we fix ipods.

alternitively, if its newish, goto the apple store or Rogers/Fido and get a new one.

!MiKrofT 08-26-2009 12:37 PM

Hmm.. anyone know where I can get a cheap video out cable? I'm still on 3.0 firmware. I'd go dealextreme but I'd like to get one in the next few days.

Psykopathik 08-26-2009 03:51 PM

no one makes a 3.0 cable however i am using the DX cable and a IAPD hack.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3plJUygdFM

try not to laugh at my voice

be warned. back up your phone first and the IAPD file you need to overwrite

!MiKrofT 08-26-2009 04:40 PM

Nice recording hehe :D

Yeah I was gonna do the DX hack but just needed to find a compatible cable. Guess no one would have it locally.
