nice shots Tom!

the 2nd shot stands out because the colors seem faded and may be a bit too bright.

After 20 minutes of random play, I give them a set, tell them what to do and how to interact with the kids, reminding them I'm not here.

I made sure to capture all that's needed. Together as a family, just kids, individuals, walking pictures, playful pictures, staged, ect.

sounds simple enough, yet it probably takes experience to know where to stand and analyze the situation to get such good shots...

props to all the portrait shooters!

I think she's well lit, but you need to separate her black top and hair from the black background. Try using a snoot and light the background and use a hair light.

Of course, she can change the colour of her top if you want to keep the black background. That way you'd just need a hairlight.

Either change the background or add a couple rim/hair lights to accent her hair, because her head just disappears into the background. Same with the sweater but theres a subtle difference in color there.

EDIT: oh wow senna already said that. lol i should read before i post.

Greg,
Third picture Kettle bell is too hot and so is his hand. A tiny bit of separating from the shorts and the shadow on his leg would be nice.

First picture, I find his hair to hot

That's only part of it. It also depends on whether you've assigned a profile or converted to a profile, saved in Windows or Mac RGB, and your output gamma.

i usually change the color mode to lab color (read it in a book somewhere). It really brightens up the colors and makes them more vibrant.

Lab Color

VS

Regular RGB color

Taken with my temporary D40 until my XSi on boxing day =)

says "Nintensity" on the hood.

btw, my face isn't dirty, its just the saturation was lowered, and clarity/sharpness was taken a notch up.

yeah, but if you look at the yellow leaves in the background (RGB), it appears to have a redish tone color, where you're looking more of a saturated vibrant yellow instead. (same goes for the baby's top of the head..)
otherwise, looks great!

Yeah changing to lab color can really over saturate the yellows and reds so i have to do some readjusting after switching.

I'm not sure if it's supposed to do that though.. anyone else use lab color?

If you're printing, CMYK all the way. Web use only, use sRGB.

I kinda wish you didn't chop off her chin, but she has very distinctive eyes. Are those contacts?

I was looking at that too... i have another shot where i didn't cut it off, but i think this one still looks better, maybe a quarter inch up or down would've done a huge difference.. i think it was cut off at the wrong place... and her eyes are done through post processing... she has light brown eyes but i enhanced it a bit more and desaturated her skin a bit too...
