I think 2/3 can be interchangeable. AMEX is huge mostly in rest of the world but for some reason, it is really small here.

Royal Bank Avion Platinum is the best card. You can transfer points for free for both asiamiles or ba's program for free tickets, hotels, etc...

even if you arent using all the features of the RBC Avion, i still think it's worth the 120$ charge each month based purely on the service

You know the requirements for the black card, right? I only know two people with black cards.

And I hear rumors that there's a newer, more exclusive Amex now.

I got HSBC Platinum in HK as well... but the points expire every year, so I use another card usually the jack up the points.

You should try the AMEX with Asia miles: http://www.americanexpress.com/hk/en...ode=0000AVE002

Im still thinking about the Avion card. I also have the CIBC dividend card but have not activated it yet. With the Avion, what im concerned is out of country purchases, will I get raped on exchange and service fees? Also kind of weird having a flying card with no lounge access anywhere.

Also deciding between CIBC Aerogold or RBC Avion

You can upgrade your card, just call RBC at 1-800-769-2512. If you do, it's like you are just getting a new card and not actually reapplying for a new one so they wont do a credit check etc so it wont hurt your score.

the $120 is more than worth it just for the insurances it offers. If u travel alot and put all the charges to ur visa, u'll get:

- rental car collision insurance (so u dont have to purchase the $2x a day LDW rate ontop of ur rental to a max of 48 day rental

- emergency purchase insurance if the airline looses or delays ur baggage and u need to buy living things such as shirts, pants, underwear, toothbrush etc

- airline delay insurance to cover ur hotel stays, other expenses due to a delayed or cancelled flight

- purchase insurance for personal items or family gifts that are damaged, lost, or stolen within 90 days of purchase (my iphone got jacked 1.5 months after i got it and im covered for it)

- accident insurance, if u get hit or some accident happens when ur on the road and u need medical

some other stuff i cant remember.

the only thing that took me a while to consider the Avion plat over the preffered Plat is that the avion doesnt include is out of state/country 31 day medical coverage. with the avion, its an option u can purchase ($130 for 31 days i believe?) but with the preferred platinum its included. im covered for my work trips for medical anyway so i dont really need that option thus ended up goin for the avion.

however i use aeroplan for faster free flights. trip to asia is only 75,000 aeroplan points, its 100,000 rbc points with avion. with both, i get double mileage i fly average 10k miles a month for work so the points do add up
Old thread but anyways, why not get the CIBC Aerogold plan then since you can collect aerogold points faster?

I am still deciding between CIBC aerogold or RBC avion. I want to fly to HK alot, and I know Air Canada has lots of flights. I am just worried that with Aerogold there might be seat and date restrictions. It seems like Aerogold miles are much easier to get since you can use your credit card and also use the Aeroplan miles when you purchase gas at Esso or groccery shopping etc while Avion is limited to only the credit card itself.

With Aerogold, can you book any date on an Air Canada plane or any Star Alliance member plane? Or does it have major restrictions? The avion states no restrictions so that's what I like about it.

Also the personal purchase insurance does sound good. Dropping a laptop after 50 days and get full coverage sounds nice.

[edit] Also happy that I can transfer my Avion points to AsiaMiles, although AsiaMiles sucks right now for me because im not living in HK and they expire in 3 years

Aerogold sucks crap... (couple years ago anyway) you will never be able to fly because most of the year is in the blacked out period.
