You know what? I think we both see the same reality (this city is small), but we perceive it differently. Here's why:
1) Early HS is a time for kids to learn to live w/ each other. I don't put much weight in what happens during this period, even though you will see the most racist shit happen. They are kids after all. This is the time where you have to take shit and fight back at a primal level. You can have a lot of fun doing this :D but it depends on your situation. Disagree with me, if you like.
Everyone will have to go through a process of getting along at some point, even older ppl who will have to resolve their pre-conceptions. Ppl are born this way. My experience was that as you matured in Gr. 11 + 12, ppl stopped caring about childish things like which group you belonged to.
2) I don't care about exceptions to the rule (ie girls dating for status). I concentrate on what the majority are like. You and I see the same things, I just don't believe it's as a big of a deal because outliers are hard to control.
Like it or not, there will always be some racism around because of different ppl everywhere and the fact you're still a minority. In an environment like this, it's important you be strong enough with your identity where one-off incidents and things on tv don't effect you, IMO. Other ppl don't live your life so they shouldn't be running it.
3) I see CBC as a subculture in Canada and you don't have to be born here or even be HK Chinese. There's no book that dictates you have to be this way or that way. It just happens. The label's applied after the fact. Hongers, Twangers, Mainlanders don't have a book either. Ethnically they are the same, but their cultures are different cuz of their diff environments. That's the truth. So then, when Hongers diss mainlanders are they selling out their own race?
To me, it's a bunch of people who want to diss other people. But others see the current HK book as what CBCers should aspire to. When things don't happen according to that belief, the double standard begins.
Anyway, there's my take. It's ok if you don't agree with it; you make up your own mind. But I still think much of your previous post regarding CBCs was dead wrong.

Try starting a club called "The Whites-Only Club", or "The Aryan Club", and people will be quick to start comparisons with white supremacist groups. But no one will really object to "Chinese Club" or "Indian Club."

Yes, but my point was: "The White Club" carries baggage because of the past. It's a double standard but you can get around it with a different name + still have activities catering to white guys.

For one race to insult their own race means they've adapted a different culture and that makes it ok? ... Wait no, you were talking about being held to a standard socially is wrong?
That this way of 'surviving/adapting to an environment' (lol Club Days are srsbsn) isn't wrong and we aren't supposed to judge because we're not in their shoes?
That family members like to live near each other? That the lower mainland has a Chinese population that immigrated here, but they're considered Canadian Born Chinese(what in the blue hell...?) even though they immigrated here?
Wait, how did you mix up a "Canadian" club means the same thing as an anglo-saxan club? |
Stupidest reply of the year.
I have no idea what you're talking about. You had a rant ready and wanted to use my post to springboard into it. Nice job of not reading what I wrote  . Go get some glasses.

To really dig into this..
Stereotypes aren't racist. It's natural to group ppl. It's only racist when it's made up to fit somebody's predetermined conclusion. The problem is you gotta handle it delicately. Some can do it, some can't.
