After you answer that, tell me where you would like them to get the money for it, knowing that they're currently facing a defecit and will be in the red within 3 years. I seem to recall everyone freaking out in that other thread about possible ways translink may decide to try and tax people for additional sources of revenue.

Again, with what money?

And also, do you think that "slush fund" literally refers to snow & slush?

i dunno maybe they should do their job before getting a raised. Not building the Millenium Line would be one thing...

"Slush fund is a colloquial term which has come to mean an auxiliary monetary account or a reserve fund. However, the term has special meaning within a context of corrupt (including but not limited to) political dealings by governments, large corporations or other bodies and individuals."

You guys are forgetting, Translink gets most of their money from the government anyway. The fare doesn't even pay for even 50% of the actual cost of each person riding. If you want translink to get plows and salter you should just tell the city to get more.
Like someone else has said, If translink had our own plows, what would they do the rest of the year? Theres no use for them as construction equipment. all that work for translink is contracted out. They would spend most of their useful life sitting doing nothing.
For that matter In all the snow driving I've done during the snow, I've only seen half a dozen plows.
How many is COV supposed to have? where are they all?

I wonder how people in Vegas are thinking about their random snow storm.
Snow is so rare for them their airport has NO snow equipment.
Not a single plow on hand, airport shut down until someone could come in and clear it.
(I think it was vegas anyway...)

couldn't agree more
but this doesnt have to do much with delays caused by the snow

sounds to me like a lot of pissing and moaning from some very ignorant, narrow-minded individuals
here's a tip to not sound like an idiot: before ranting and raving on an issue, try to indulge yourself in the full spectrum of that topic.

Wowzers, this is a really good point. In London, there are 3 privatized transport firms running the buses. Although its administered by one central governmental agency, I've heard that each private firm bids to provide the service for each route.
System works really well here, but the population density is also much higher.
A bus driver here earns about $50,000CAD/yr, while a tube train driver is paid about $80,000CAD/yr.
Given that London is exponentially more expensive to live than Vancouver, and has a far more efficient transit system I'd say that Translink drivers are overpaid based on system performance.

Iceman_2K 12-26-2008 07:45 AM

took the skytrain and bus to richmond to work for the last few days, and it was alright. Left early at 6 in the morning to catch the 27 to Joyce and then Skytrain to 22nd St Station. From there, 410 to Richmond. Took an hour and 20 to get to work, but that wasn't much more than if i was able to drive with the kind of weather conditions. Granted, its not like the MTR system in HK, but i haven't taken public transportation in Vancouver in 7 years, and it was pretty shitty the last time i took it, so i swore off it and got a car. This time, i was pleasantly surprised.

flameboy54 12-26-2008 07:01 PM

I'm pretty lenient about our transit system but when your customer information line doesn't work for the whole day when customers need information the most, that is fucked up. I called their info line on 2 instances today, multiple times and all I get is a busy signal. I highly doubt their line is 'out of order' or whatever. I mean, I understand that you'll be getting a higher then usual volume of calls but you can at least put of a pre-recorded message instead of cutting it off completely.

I told my students to avoid metrotown.

It's like fireworks nights. Scares the living fuck outta me.

JSALES 12-26-2008 07:29 PM

haha it was so bad at metrotown, police officers were holding people back before that bridge going to the station

jimzilla 12-26-2008 07:41 PM

gong show at metro, thank god i decided to drive today. Smartest choice i made these pass 2 weeks

orange7 12-26-2008 08:25 PM

all trolley buses are down right now, and the current condition outside is "rainning."

orange7 12-26-2008 08:29 PM

transit really failed me today..

got off work today at metro from a 12hrs shift. When i skytrained to 29th Ave., I found out that the 16 isn't coming because it's rainning

stop sucking on transit's dick. took me 4 hours to get home from burrard to lougheed tonight. skytrain came every 30 minutes. stops at each station for 15 minutes. problems at king george?? shouldnt have affected millenium line!! so stfu boy. fucking piece of shiet transit

Razor Ramon HG 12-27-2008 01:01 AM

Huge ass lineup today at Metrotown around 5-6PM because of a broken branch or some shit on the 29th lane. Took 45 minutes to fix, and made me late for the Canucks game, not to mention some weird guy screaming about random shit on one of the skytrains.

A bus driver makes 25000 pounds? That's peanuts. A BK meal will cost you 6#.

WTF!!! That's not even the skytrain platform! That's backed up all the way to the mall entrance! Unbelievably glad I avoided Metrotown today.

I'm hoping transit doesn't get worse this weekend with all the rain and the possible flooding/freezing.

In_MODeration 12-27-2008 09:49 AM

you also have to remmember that most of the mechanics are on vacation too, its not just the trains itself that are not working

LemonH2O 12-27-2008 11:19 AM

Metro was so busy we were told to just keep walking up to the train, didn't have to pay

You kidding? Both the Expo and Millenium Line trains run on the same track for a large portion of the run. So, if an Expo line train can't get to the station on that line, it messes up the runs for the rest of the trains.

and that's just a completely obvious fact. it's like i said, lomac. these people have no interest in understanding the full spectrum of the situation.
and it's called understanding. not sucking dick
