^ blocking shots, penalty killing, faceoffs, forechecking. guy has heart, i've grown to respect what he contributes to the team.

Hondaracer 01-05-2010 11:38 AM

IMO he's overrated and his short comings are not worth his pay check, better players could be in that position and he is often refered to as one of gillis's mistakes on the radio

He does all the dirty stuff that player don't do enough off. His shot blocking abilities are awesome. The guy puts his body on the line to block shots that might not even hit the net!

Shot blocking isn't really a talent nor a skill. It's an easily replaceable commodity IMO.

I'd rather the franchise groom players like Shirokov and CoHo like they groomed Kesler and Burrows in place of place of pluggers like Johnson. Players with an offensive talent but will still do the dirty work.

Hondaracer 01-05-2010 12:03 PM

I bet you kesler has close to if not more blocked shots

I don't question Johnson's heart and dedication, but clearly, his limited skill set is in decline. He seldom uses his asset, his speed, because once he has the puck, he doesn't know what to do with it. His faceoff proficiency is no longer what it once was either.

His contract is up at the end of the year and I doubt that Gillis will be bringing him back when a guy like Bolduc can be just as effective and cheaper in a fourth-line role.

clowe 01-05-2010 12:43 PM

Kesler with 44, Johnson with 45, Mitchell leads the team with 69. League leaders are Brett Clark and Dennis Seidenberg with 123 and 122 respectively.

I'd hate to agree with Hondaracer here but Johnson isn't that effective of a penalty killer IMO, I hate to say it cause he plays his heart out and puts his body in harms way all the time, but he's not that great at getting the puck down the ice.

Last year, I think CBC showed a stat where we got scored on the most when Johnson was penalty killing and Pyatt had one of the higher percentages of killing the penalty. But that could be due to Johnson facing the top PP units and Pyatt facing the secondary units.

^the truth. he just looks lost on the PK a lot of times. and teams are figuring out he will go down for the shotblock and they can sidestep it now.

Tim Budong 01-05-2010 03:55 PM

Pepsi has completely failed
your can't force a corporate cheer ont a national product like team Canada

on the other hand, Ovie as captain, well..hes hte game breaker and i guess it works. Typical qualities of a non northamerican captain.

exactly, i love johnson and wat he brings, but unfornately its not that very good aside from him putting his body on the line to block a shot.

i find it funny how he was brought into this club being a PK specialist, but our PK hasnt gotten any better over the years.
