i've had too many close calls because of people on their phones. and i don't just mean car accidents, i mean, physically getting hit by a car. i'll be at the corner waiting to cross or even at a cross walk and some jerk will be too busy on their phone to notice that they've nearly hit me with their car. and when i start screaming and yelling at them they give me the "what's your problem?!?" look.

also, something needs to be done about the growing number of people listening to their ipods/mp3 players with their massive head phones on while driving.

i'm fine with the phone part but the ipod/gps part is complete bullshit. How is that any different from operating a head unit/radio? So I can't use my ipod, connected thru the aux input on my stereo? Dumb.

I'd probably argue that once connected thru the auxiliary cable, the ipod is now a part, or an extension of the car stereo, no longer a handheld/portable device.

What if you're pulled over on the side of the road talking the phone?

It would suck if you got ticketed, especially if your car was left running.

Stop being a drama queen.

My car has a clock, I'm sure yours does too. Use it.

The law bans using the handheld device period. Put it down, no need to pick it up at all if you have a handsfree system installed.

If a cop does this make sure you complain loudly. Remember, police have discretion to enforce the law, hopefully they won't be this ridiculous.

How was this rammed down your throat?

You elected officials to make the best judgment for you, and they did.

Yes my car has a clock in it too.

Personally I have become 20X more distracted by my built in navigation unit than my cell phone has ever distracted me. So why not ban built in navigation units? Yes of course their is a disclaimer saying not to use it while operating but how many people do you think actually follow that?

Why dont they just ban passengers in cars too? Seriously, a passenger beside you will be more likely to take your eyes off the road than being on a cell phone.

Drama queen, yes but answer this.

how many times have you almost been hit by people speeding and running lights?

There is a law against both of those, and clearly, people still run lights and speed excessively all day every day in any speed zone. Im not saying this law isnt going to do anything, Im sure the only people who will abide this law, were the ones who rarely talk on the phone anyways. For everyone else, I doubt it.

They may eventually. Remember, 2 wrongs don't make a right. Arguing something else is as bad as a cell phone is only likely to get that banned too.

Cause they are not drama queens.

and people still commit murders, rape women, ... shall we just abandon all laws cause a few break them?

You're probably right, yet the rest will be convinced to obey it after a few tickets, especially since the tickets carry points.

Anything is better than the current system we have.

The thing about a passenger is they are in the same situation as you and will react to the situation, while someone on the other end of your phone wont know the guy in front of you just slammed on his brakes and they'll keep distracting you.

I'm curious,

You people who are on side with this law have NEVER used the phone in your car? Not even once?

I guess I won't get an honest answer, no one would openly admit to being a hypocrite...

I don't think the law goes far enough and I don't own a cell phone by choice.

The new law is very clear. You'll need a mounted Bluetooth device that only takes one touch to activate. It's the same with iPod. If it is wired into the stereo system, they're ok with it.

The ban on cell phone in the car is ok.. but its retarded wtf is this $100 fine?? That is NOTHING... 100+SUper low chance of being caught = people gonna do it anyways!
Greedy chumps just want to milk money .. Come on, if they jacked speeding tickets/ talking on the phone bills to like 500+, i guarantee speeding/cell phone use rate will go down..
All the government is doing is trying to find a medium price, so people will speed get caught and just choke down the ticket and speed away with out giving it much thought... (AKA lets say were cracking down on speeding but really we just want more money!)

Are we able to dial using our cell phone first, and then talk on the headset or is it bad all together.
