However, I've posted a way to get back to X10a firmware on XDA forum, which I got from one of the guys working on rooting the X10.

thx, heh i already know about that i've been going thru different firmwares each week lol.. but i think i'll stick with the hk one and hopefully they have a new update soon or 1 day the phone gets rooted and i can put handwrite recog tool in other firmwares ~~

Camera
The camera is by far amongst the best cameras on any phone out there at the moment. The picture quality in daylight is on par with regular point & shoots. In low-light it is a bit lacking (lots of noise in the picture). The LED flash doesn't help much since it causes the colours in the picture to be whitened and you have to manually turn on the LED light and keep it on while taking the picture (it doesn't flash on when u take the picture and then off after taking it).

Screen
The 4" screen is the biggest you can get (aside from the HTC Evo 4G which is at 4.3"). The screen is crisp and clear. Great for watching videos. The viewing angle is pretty good. You can see the picture from almost any angle, but the colours do seem a bit washed-out as you view it away from center. The resolution is 854 x 480, which is higher than most phones (most are 800 x 480) except the iPhone 4G (960 x 640).

Social Integration
This is the selling point of the phone with its Timescape and Mediascape applications. It allows you to view everything you have about a contact in one convenient location via their contact card or via the Timescape app: Facebook/Twitter statuses, Usual contact info, call log, SMS, email, photos of the person on your phone. You can also view Youtube videos of an artist or find other music by that artist via viewing the artists' "contact' card when you are playing their music.

These are the selling points and advantages I see for the X10.

I've noticed 854x480 seems to cause problems with some 3rd party apps. ie.gps and games.

I checked out the X10 mini again, this time next to a normal X10. I am amazed at how sluggish the X10 is compared to the Desire.. Scrolling is very choppy, even for the simplest menus. The display isn't very good either, compared to OLED and IPS.

However the little X10 Mini sees a lot snappier, probably because it only has to deal with a much lower resolution.

I tried typing with it, and the version I tested (HK version) only had a keypad-like text input for English. So it was like typing on a fucking cell phone, which is a huge FAIL. I'm sure you could install any keyboard app form the Market, as long as they support the low resolution.

Could be to do with the outdated 1.6 that both these phones are running.

Pally777 06-10-2010 11:44 AM

It's mainly due to the crappy firmware SE puts on it... Their Timescape and Mediascape needs more optimization.

I've been running the R1FA016 firmware (original is R1FA014) and the battery life is much better (also you need to cycle the battery from full depleted to fully charged a few times). I get about 1 full day of medium-high usage from it. Timescape and Mediascape are also smoother when scrolling etc... after the firmware update.

Most of the X10s you see out there @ the shops probably did not have firmware updates and that's why it's so sluggish.

SkinnyPupp 06-10-2010 07:36 PM

Can't believe people think you need to cycle lithium batteries.. Folks it's not 1993 anymore! These aren't Nickel batteries! You are wasting your time! :lol

For you guys who own this phone already, could you please post a picture with another object as reference? Say, a business card, DL, etc. I'd like to get a better idea of how big/small this phone is.

Why not just goto any cellular deal and actually pick one up for size?? There are so many rogers places I'm sure you'll bump into one.

using the invisible shield. I don't like it very much... it has a weird feel to it. much more responsive than the stock one though.

!MiKrofT 06-21-2010 12:17 PM

Try SGP Steinheil Crystal. I'm using the screen protector on a different phone and like it quite a bit.

JKam 06-22-2010 02:53 PM

They only rooted the OS. Not the bootloader. No easy custom roms till this is done.

nns 06-23-2010 07:36 PM

What sort of risks are there to this root, if any?

There is no reason to root your OS unless you have a specific reason to do so.

For the X10 there is. It has shit battery life which hopefully can be addressed by removing all the timescape/moxier/mediascape garbage. I'd also like more than 3 homescreens (which I can have with helix but i'd like it natively) Also theres a ton of apps that require 2.1 now too...

sas 06-25-2010 01:51 PM

The X10 looks georgous but when I handled one in the Rogers store, a bit worried how well it will fit in my suit pocket. Lack of multi-touch kind of sucks but not a deal breaker for me (although playing SF would've been nice). As long as I can run MS office.

From what I gathered in this forum, the Android OS drawing point would be that it is open source vs the Apple.

Is there anyone here that had both an iphone and the SE X10 and what would you choose between the two? Is it safe to say that Apple will have better aps and UI vs the SE? I'm leaning towards the X10 right now for all the wrong reasons (aesthetically more pleasing and I'm not a fan of Apple and itunes).

SkinnyPupp 06-25-2010 05:28 PM

IF you want to run office, get a Windows phone

I don't have both phones, but my gf has the iPhone 3G and I have the X10. I've used her phone and I have to say Apple's UI is the most intuitive. It also has multi-touch (which is a big thing for games mainly). The biggest appeal is their iTunes store, which has a ton of great apps that Android currently does not have... YET. As you probably have heard, the iPhone 4G has tons of issues with reception, screen poorly manufactured on some and easily cracked glass (glass is used on front and back).

As for the X10, it's main drawing power is Android OS, camera, 4" screen and looks. It has pre-loaded programs to view Office documents and PDFs. You can probably find some better ones on Android Market though. I'm currently running the latest firmware (R2BA020 - X10i Germany de-branded firmware) and it's a noticeable improvement in response time and battery life. It also fixed some bugs as well. I love the new Chinese keyboard on there that allows you to draw strokes and it finds the word for you.

Now that they've rooted the phone, you will eventually be able to put custom versions of Android OSes on the X10. This will give you much more flexibility in choosing what you want and how you want it. I've not heard of customized OSes for the iPhone, but maybe it doesn't need it since it's already great.

Thanks for the reply Pally,

I'm not a big tech person but I guess if you went with the X10, you are putting faith in Google and hoping they deliver (with apps and upgrades) whereas the Apple has a considerable advantage. Could care less about the camera.

I'll look into windows phone as well but will probably just end up with an iphone.

Forget winmo until windows phone 7 comes out. No point getting an old os. Google will deliver. We know this because of all the releases they've been doing recently. Google market currently has about 1/2 of what itunes has but I'm sure it'll be more even once u remove crap like ifart, ibeer, etc.
