The integrity of the game is compromised because they refused to utilize technology? They're BARELY changing the game by adding in video replay. All they are doing is making sure the right call is made and not cheat anyone out of a goal. I'm sure if they had video review back then they would use it.

And I'm not sure but did their fathers and grandfathers back in the day dive and grab their leg in agony whenever there's the slightest contact?

Assuming they didn't and instead of cracking down on diving they keep with "tradition" and let it go. Does this make the game better?

Its not the same game when you rely on technology to make the calls for you. The result of using cameras to make calls is that the referee becomes lazier and more dependent on technology. And you can't say technology makes our lives more efficient because its a given fact that technology is disruptive.

People always believe that technology will improve everything (and yes, its awesome having the things we have today), however, technology causes us to focus on other things and creates new problems (example, people used typewriters at work, computers were introduced, people started to do more than just work with computers). Or how about the Zamboni incident at the skating oval. Yes, its a "nice to have" but it causes other things than work to happen. I mean you wonder, why didn't anyone just check to make sure the Zamboni was working properly? Its such a simple task.

Result from this added technology is that the referee becomes "lazier" and he starts to miss other calls. Next thing you know people will want cameras following every player to make sure nobody gets hit. After each hit, ref gets someone to review the tapes causing the game to become even longer. Shit, all of a sudden you realize we're watching FOOT-BALL, not "futbol".

If our life is all about traditions we'd still be living in the stone age with no tv, computers, ipods or cell phones. Hell, the Enlightenment would have been deemed heresy and all the philosophers of the Enlightenment would have been beheaded because they were expressing un-traditional ideas.

Refs nowadays have too much power, whether it be football or hockey. Adding technology to the game to determine the validity of calls will not make refs lazier, but force them do their job better. They won't be able to get away with bs calls because they will be proven wrong by the video and be embarrassed on national television for being incompetent. Yea, human errors are also possible, but calls that are clearly wrong should be corrected. In fact, making bs calls should be considered lazy because they're calling EVERYTHING they see without thinking it through.

Its not life, its Soccer. And it WOULDN'T force the ref's to do their job better because they would simply refer back to the video. Read my section about disruptive technologies.

if we introduced instant replays then we'd have to stop and watch every potential offside and hit and dive.

And what then? What if it was called on side and it was off? Or a dive was an actual hit? Do we have more free kicks or do we put players into the penalty box for 2 minutes?

a 90 minute match, with about 5 min stoppage time would become a 150 minute match if they stopped each time they had to review something

Maybe they could just review goals while the game is playing and adjust the score as need be. But even then it would be tricky if a goal happened super late in the game. I'm sure that is why they don't review goals - they don't have much of a system in place without altering the game.

Another idea would be to stop the reviewing time so no injury time is needed. Or, they can skip the whole video replay thing and put an official behind each goal line.

Refs are human and make errors too. They are not to be blamed for missed called. We live in the year 2010 when cameras are EASILY accessible. It woulda taken them no more than 1-2 minutes. Ref walks over to the side with a tiny tv. They show it's clearly in. Overrule the goal. Done. Flow barely disrupted. CORRECT call is made. Game is no longer determined because 1 out of thousands of people in the stadium missed the goal.

If you watch a sport like hockey then the rules are only goals are allowed to go to video replay. Any other calls like offsides or penalties are not allowed to be reviewed.

Nothing feels worse than losing because of bad call. Not losing 10-1, not losing 2-1 ion a tight game.

I'm in favor of adding review system, but some limitation has to be planted to avoid abuse.

One thing I can think of is, they get 3 subs in the game, if they want to challenge any of the referee's decision, they lose 1 sub opportunity every time, if no more subs opportunity is available, certain advantage must be given to the other team. Maybe limit 1 player certain amount of time from playing in the game.

Last but not least, the referee still obtain full right to make the final decision based on his interpretation.

This way, everything stays pretty much the same and team will not challenge unless it's absolutely necessary

A nice write up in the Sun today of one my close friends. I actually got another autograph Cristiano Ronaldo jersey in the mail 2 days ago from him, I've asked him for game worn shoes or a game worn jersey but doubt I'll get that.

Quote:

VANCOUVER — Daniel Fernandes remembers kicking a soccer ball on the streets of east Vancouver with friends on warm summer evenings.

He remembers snowboarding on Mount Seymour, playing basketball, volleyball, roller hockey and rugby.

There was just about no sport that the 26-year-old didn’t try.

But the Portuguese-Canadian settled on soccer because it wasn’t as dangerous as sports like snowboarding and because of his love of Europe which has close ties to the game.

Now, as third goalkeeper on the Portuguese national team at the FIFA World Cup soccer tournament in South Africa, the Vancouver native wants to say thank you to the people who supported and motivated him before he crossed the ocean at age 17 to join the youth system in Portugal.

“For me, being a Canadian-Portuguese means so much to me,” he said over a crackling phone line from South Africa while huddled with teammates in advance of Tuesday’s big game against Spain. “To all the people who supported me in Vancouver, to all the people I know and to even the people who don’t know me but have followed me, I would like to send my heart.”

He knows that his Portuguese father Antonio, a construction worker, and his Czech mother Brenda, a nurse, are watching the games back in Vancouver with his brother Tony.

His other brother Nelson is in South Africa with him along with a best friend.

As the third goalkeeper, Fernandes, who played very briefly with the Vancouver Whitecaps, knows his chances of getting on the field at the World Cup are slim, but he isn’t frustrated by this.

“Frustration isn’t something in a top athlete’s mind. You should be positive and motivated,” he said. “You have got to be ready at any second. You have to train at the highest level.”

Being part of the FIFA tournament in South Africa has already provided many memorable moments. Playing against the five-time champions Brazil, which resulted in a 0-0 draw, was near the top.

“As a kid, I always watched Brazil-Portugal games. That really stuck in my head as I realized here I was at the World Cup. It was beautiful.”

He has also got to know Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese team captain, soccer heartthrob and the game’s highest-paid player.

Ronaldo, who has yet to shine at this World Cup, scored 26 goals in 29 matches for Real Madrid this season, but has only a late strike in Portugal’s 7-0 rout of North Korea.

“He loves what he does and I respect that,” said Fernandes. “He (sets) a good example on the field and even off the field.”

Fernandes says he loves Canada and Portugal equally. He hopes that one day he will see a World Cup soccer tournament in Canada.

But for now, he is thinking of only one thing — a big win against Spain.

“We don’t want any ifs on the Portuguese national team. We have to be our best.”

^ Well only because:
there's so few scoring chances, a 1 minute highlight is plenty of time to capture it all.
there's no drama. Players diving and getting hurt is normal. There's no fighting of course, this is a pretty discipline sport.
So there isn't really any "extra stuff" worth watching that happened in the game that might get left out in a highlight.

I just find watching 90+ minutes just to pick out 10 scoring chances is a bit tough to remain focused throughout the entire game.
Not really sitting on the edge of my seat. How do the rest of you guys do it?

The thing is, I love playing soccer though, probably my favourite sport.

penalty shootouts is like 10 scoring chances in a span of 2 mins...
mind blasting.

FUCK Japan just lost.
Can't believe that idiot hit the crossbar...
gotta keep the shots low on shootouts...

The last Paraguay shooter practically walked up to the ball before taking the shot.
