they can tax you on jerry cans of gas? can they tax you if you said you went down to fill up for gas? how about on groceries?

nickmak 03-05-2011 08:37 PM

i've brought 40L of gas through (2 jerry cans were 40L) plus my full tank of gas and they didn't care. mind you they pretty much know me now since i go at least once a week. i drive a gas guzzler and i live a few hundred feet from the boarder so it makes sense for me to go to PR to get gas. but if you live in vancouver probably not. plus boarder traffic can suck big time, i left for work this morning and the line up was already in front of my driveway. tip: go at night.

oh and as far as i know you don't get taxed on groceries. my parents go to bellingham a lot and they always bring groceries back with them (they LOVE trader joes) and they havent been taxed. and it's not like they're not declaring them or anything like that

You do realize that it's more of a jump on this side of the border too? It's 13 cents to go from 87 to 91.

I'm going to start filling up @ Point Roberts more often the way gas prices are going... just keep buying smaller stuff from DealXtreme, Monoprice, etc...

how many litres can you carry accross?

i went weekly for years, i never was bothered by the border guards(had been "random search"they didn't bother me), and i was at first name basis with a couple, one imported my car, and then his traniee got to know me so they just passed me thru.

and on the american side, the border guard is my neighbour at my townhome in blaine. so again, i get wavied thru i probably should of applied for nexus, but the times i went i never waited more than 10 minutes both ways.

racerman88 03-06-2011 12:41 PM

Gas yesterday is $1.10USD per liter for supreme at Chevron

Energy 03-18-2011 12:58 PM

Anyone go down there recently? What are the prices like? I'm planning to go later in the afternoon.

syee 03-18-2011 01:04 PM

I was in Blaine on Monday. 92 octane was $4.05/gallon (which is $1.07/L)

That is correct.

Gas inside your car's gas tank is non taxable.

Gas inside portable containers IS taxable, and subject to a fairly high rate of duty as well.

I don't believe there is any tax exemption on groceries... they fall into the amount of your personal exemption if you have been away for a certain amount of time.

taylor192 03-18-2011 02:53 PM

Just got back.

$1.15 for 92 at Chevron.
$600 of merchandise, no tax, no duty.

I figured I saved about $400 on merchandise, $120 on taxes, and $20 on gas.

Euro7r 03-19-2011 01:01 PM

$1.11 Chevron @ Pt. Roberts.

Went to TSB to pick up an item I ordered online for $213. Didn't get taxed.

TypeRNammer 03-19-2011 04:30 PM

I haven't got taxed on bringing gas back.

I usually get 40L extra on top of the gas I fill in my car.

Since majority of grocery/food items are non-taxable in Canada anyways, there's no issues bringing them in from the US, even say $500 worth of groceries in a 3 hour trip. So there is no special exemption amount for groceries, they are just exempt generally.

There are limits on how much meat each person can bring in, and no fruits and vegetables can come back into Canada I believe. We always bring back dairy, eggs, since it is literally half the price of what it is here when it is full priced in the US. And a roast chicken from US Costco, that stuff is money :)

RevRav 03-20-2011 01:06 AM

^ Anyone remember the limit for meat? And aware of any grocery/food items that are actually taxable?

Candy and soft drinks would be taxable. (as they already are here). Meat max is 20kg.

Here's the categories and the duties/taxes you'd have to pay:

Summary:

- Diary products (max $20
- Eggs (max 2 dozens)
- Meat (max 20kg)

Greenstoner 03-26-2011 05:55 AM

just got back from Bellingham $3.97 (5am) <--- consider high i guess

roastpuff 03-26-2011 08:44 AM

1.16 for V-Power at Shell, 1.15 for Premium at Chevron and 1.14 at Texaco.

I filled up @ Texaco.

syee 03-28-2011 09:18 PM

Gas today was 3.91/4.01/4.11 per gallon. (1.03/1.06/1.09 per L) at Shell in Blaine on D St. Texaco across the road was the same price.

EDIT: Not gas related but that Shell station also sells cheap milk if you're filling up there anyways. Milk is $2.49/gallon with gas purchase. A lot cheaper than the $4+ /gallon we pay here.

TypeRNammer 04-05-2011 09:45 PM

Currently it's 1.20 for premium at Chevron, in Pt Roberts

Energy 04-05-2011 10:13 PM

Its rising slowly. It was 1.16 last Saturday.
