Custom-built cable sweeper ditched on Port Mann Bridge - British Columbia - CBC News

they nixed this:
for this:

Presto 12-21-2016 07:06 AM

Great. Now, we can worry about rusty 'cable collars' falling from the sky. The costs probably break down to the hundreds for each chain link, too. :troll:

DragonChi 12-21-2016 07:27 AM

It's even funnier when you see what it really looks like.

Teriyaki 12-21-2016 07:46 AM

LOL, its honestly just a rusty chain thrown down the cable!!!

thumper 12-21-2016 08:03 AM

sooo... the weather forecast crystal ball/snow globe says snow next monday after xmas?

From the CBC article
Quote:

"I believe in New York, they just have guys go out with baseball bats and hit the cables to start them shaking."
So why don't we just pay a few hosers here to do the same with Hockey sticks?

:troll:

I am wondering if this is all a joke.
Really. The amount of money they spent on the bridge and highway project, combined with all of the issues they have had, and they come up with this.

unbelievable.

Right?

Sometimes I find it incredible how the folks responsible for these things can keep a straight face when being interviewed on TV.

whitev70r 12-21-2016 10:02 AM

So how do the chain collars make its way back up the top??

whitev70r 12-21-2016 10:04 AM

On another note, wondering if anyone can review the all weather tires that are out there, like the Nokan WRG3. Did they perform OK over the last 2-3 weeks. Consulting a friend who will put them on a Lexus IS 250 AWD. Of course, it goes without saying, snow is better but thinking of other viable options? Anyone ride all weather tires with AWD?

Super strong electromagnet. Costs $2Million per cable. Look for a new electromagnetic cable tax soon. lol

Berz out.

Apparently, the engineers/architects design the bridge with these things in mind, but it's the company that builds the bridge that decides to cut a few corners and do the bare minimum... ;)

I'd believe it, typically the architects design with no regard for what anything costs. At some point they look to save money and it's cut cut cut cut cut and the final product often looks different then what was originally proposed. From my experience Architects either don't know or don't care what things cost so they have to be throttled back. No idea if they cut a feature that would stop the icey balls of death on this design but if they did that's kind of fucked up.

boibuddha 12-21-2016 11:34 AM

I honestly think the chain idea is actually the most practical method of clearing ice.

The article states those cable sweepers are custom built, all I hear is untested cable sweepers. Would these things be sitting for 350 days a year, exposed to the elements? The wheels would probably be seized from sitting for so long.

Then people would complain about lack of research and how we wasted so much money on little robots that don't work.

Anyone remember the "fast ferries" which had to crawl around because the wake they created was damaging the surrounding environment? Or how about how the Americans who spent millions of dollars developing a pen that could write upside down in space? The Russians just used a pencil.

The only failure point on the chain would be installation error which is just tightening the mating link on the chain. The cable robots makes things more complicated than they need to be.

fliptuner 12-21-2016 11:40 AM

I thought they were going to use the heating cables, after what happened last year

DragonChi 12-21-2016 11:44 AM

My concern would be the impact that the chain would have on the cable fastening and brackets. Over time, it might see cracks or fatigue. I'm sure the whoever impletmented the chain idea has done the research of throwing a chain against cable connections repeatedly.

Otherwise, it gets the job done.

thumper 12-21-2016 12:22 PM

they've been closing the HOV lane on the port mann citing "ice maintenance" during the last few snow days. is it because they are running these chains, or is it something else?

If I didn't have thick tires I'm 100% sure my wheels would've either been bent or cracked.

Seriously, the condition of that bridge is shameful. Just repave the entire damn thing already.

update...

You anecdote simply proves you work with either garbage architects or students or on Government projects. Working within constraints is literally our only job. Budget is a pretty fucking big one.

This meme makes me rage. First off it's completely untrue. Second, NASA hates fire because of the whole "fire makes everybody die in space thing" and is very hardcore when it comes to prohibiting flammable materials -- like the wood in pencils. Third, graphite as broken bits and in its powder form within a zero-gravity environment could cause damage to the very expensive, very precise scientific equipment used in space. Fourth, the Russians and everybody else, since it's inception, also use and have always used the Fischer space pen.

godwin 12-21-2016 08:25 PM

They had problems ever since they open the bridge a few years ago. They had to close it the first winter during rush hour too.

Look this is a cyclical thing.. it sucks Vancouver got a cold winter, but well with Trump for the next 4 years it might be the last one for quite a while.

Sometime i think when they decide to close one lane on the portman bridge for some kind of service or maintenance that'll take a couple days or even week. They shouldn't be charging people that day i know is not gonna happen but i can always dream. I mean WTF i was told when the bridge were being build so we have the extra lane to reduce congested traffic. Instead i was fucking late for work for a couple of days because they decided to close the HOV lane to install these ghetto ass chain. Why aren't these install after the last year incident? Anyway so the next day i decided to take the surrey exit hopefully to by pass the traffic. Big fucking NOPE....those 2 lane are slower than the other lane. Everything is so fucking last min in vancouver when is winter time. like salting and plowing. Really you gonna plow the highway when is already 2pm in the afternoon and raining. But didn't plow the night when it start coming down hard at 7pm on dec 9.

I cringed that day when i saw the news reporter question her why shit weren't done on that day.
http://i2.wp.com/media.globalnews.ca...y=70&strip=all

she said salt take sometimes to work yea no shit sherlock.....why didn't you have them salt the damn place before hand. I mean holy shit even i can tell by looking at the sky during the evening that the snow is on their way. And you had days of warning ahead about the incoming snow storm and then she decided to scale up the crew last minute. I'm pretty sure everyone in the lower mainland know the 38 crews you send out didn't really get the job done.

As for translink fuck. ya'll should know how shitty they management is. 14 buses got stuck. Who's the damn turd that keep sending these buses out when 2 or 3 got stuck is not enough. You decided to send the whole fleet in.

Sorry need to get that rant out of my system. Fail away

You an architect bud, jimmies obviously rustled. I work with plenty of Architects to many to name and mostly they are all the same. I'm sorry if the truth hurts but it is what it is. I deal with a lot of projects in all phases from design build to pricing already designed buildings.

I'm not going to be petty and fail you for your opinion like you did to me even if you're mistaken but I can assure you I've been doing this a lot longer then you have so go stew about how wrong I am. Have a great day and wonderful holiday season. :)
