Greece is also facing riots/strikes/etc, Spain is in some unrest

Turkey seems to be the only safe bet if you were looking at a vacation in the Mediterranean

Hopefully they can get Mubarak out although it seems like he's going to be staying

Also what may have been lost in the news because of all this, Nelson Mandela is looking bad atm

Culverin 01-28-2011 08:46 PM

Maybe this is a dumb question.

But ...
I kind of want the people to win.

What happens if the people win?

elections and then the USA and Israel make sure the guy they support wins Mubarak2 arises round 2 begins

Snugglez 01-28-2011 08:49 PM

To
thenewgirl and other people, thinking the US should get involved.

Why would the US or any other country get involved in a domestic affair? Is any other country getting hurt? Invading, and helping out would be devastating. Ruining a country's sovereignty and hurting their government's reputation would not get them anywhere.

Their situation is not even close to Egypt. People in North Korea are kept in the dark and are cut off from the outside world.

StylinRed 01-28-2011 09:06 PM

Internet and cells are stil down

02em2 01-28-2011 09:09 PM

A very touching video about the Egypt protest. Listen to the man at 45 secs:

I got a feeling that speech is going to be one that will be often quoted through the ages

The government thru its policies virtually had taken the people's livelihoods away. It doesn't really matter what country it is, if the majority of the people can't feed their family, u bet they will revolt. Canadians arent pussies. We have it good here and the bullshit that the government throws at us r peanuts compared to what's going on in the Arab countries now. If one day our PM made it so that we can no longer feed ourselves, same thing will happen here.

So basically he forced his entire government to resign.
Isn't that just showing his country exactly what they are protesting about? his absolute dominance in the politics of the country.

I don't really see a point in what he did other than keeping his place, but ultimately taking the problem further... anybody have another view they care to share?

The_AK 01-28-2011 10:31 PM

Their form of "democracy" sounds more like a dictatorship. Hope for the best for the people of Egypt.

on another a lighter note, someone on twitter:
"No internet access in Cairo- Now the country is just called Gypt."

Manic! 01-28-2011 11:10 PM

Internet is not completely down. There are ways to get around the block like dial up. Basically using a phone modem and connecting to ISP in an another country.

Cell phone towers were shut off (I am getting word that's coming back shortly - although Internet will remain offline). Land lines are still available, although they are intermittent and sometimes lines get crossed, but it just takes a few tries.

I just want to clear a few things said in this thread.

- The Pyramids has nothing to do with what is going on. This about the freedom of the people. Almost 60 million people are struggling to put food on the table and are NOW living below the poverty line.

- deep87 Saying people blowing themselves up for their beliefs. Also false, this is not about religion, this is about people's living conditions and what they have suffered in the last three decades.

- Military VS. Police ... People of Egypt are abused and tortured daily by the police and we've always been afraid of standing up to them. Until now. The police forces are under the control of Muburak - And that is why the protesters were more respectful to the presence of the military during these protests.

- "Canada is pussy" - again that is false. If the people here in Vancouver were ever treated the way Egyptians have been treated for 28 years - the same uproar would arise on the downtown streets and all over.

- "Egypt outside of the tourist centres is not a nice place to live." Not anymore it is not. I was born and raised in Cairo and have lived in Alexandria as well. When I got the opportunity to move here, I took it in a heart beat. Living conditions were tough 13 years ago, and it's gotten plenty worse since then.

This day ahead of us will be the most important day yet - the people can't stand down now and must keep on pushing forward. Even with the threats of arrests and violence that the government is hinting at. This is now or never for us to bring down this regime.

No riots? ^ source?

StylinRed 01-29-2011 12:37 AM

it was on the al-jazeera live feed they were showing cairo at 8am local time and they were saying/showing how everything was back to normal this was 3hrs ago

MK.Dub 01-29-2011 12:38 AM

^ That is also not true. Riots have been happening all morning.

Heavily in Tahrir Square where shots have already been fired.

StylinRed 01-29-2011 12:42 AM

watching the live feed now

yeah they're saying there are a few hundred chanting protesters (but nothing lik friday)

also there are confirmed at least 53 deaths total from alexandria, cairo, suez

People have to sleep, they can't riot 24/7. When daybreaks, they will be out in the streets again, in fact they are already out in the streets. So not true when you say there are no riots today, when the day has just started over there...
