Anyone know where I can get a stabilizer locally either rent or buy? Just need it for a few days so I don't want to spend too much. |
Camera Rentals Vancouver I use these guys all the time. Cheap prices (typically) and the gear is usually in really good shape. With stabilizers, he'll often give a free day's worth rental so you can take the time to learn it. Be forewarned, they're very difficult to stabilize completely without it having at least a little forward/backward sway. |

I have a question... I want to participate in this thread, but I shoot with a dedicated video camera rather than a DSLR. I don't see any point in starting a new thread because it'll probably be just me, and really this thread is completely relevant for 99% of the stuff in here, like tripods, sliders, stabilizers, editing software, final videos that people are sharing. Mind if I join in? :) |

Cool. Well to give a bit of background I started out doing video with a Nikon D7000 and really enjoyed that for a while. I didn't take a ton of video with it but I learned a lot and learned what I like and dislike about shooting video with a DSLR. I have continued to use the tripod I had from when I was more into still photography, except I bought a fluid head for it for video. Other than that I have a stabilizer but just a cheap one and I really struggled to get rid of sway when using it with the D7000. I know part of that is user error, but it put me off a little. Overall I enjoyed the DSLR but since I was really mostly just doing video I decided to try a dedicated video camera. Now I have a Panasonic HVX200 camcorder. It's a little older but it does the job. What i like... XLR inputs for audio!! Headphone jack for audio monitoring. Zebras! Built in ND filters are super handy. Almost everything has a button/switch/knob, no need to keep going through menus. Viewfinder and articulated LCD screen. What I miss from the DSLR... it's size and light weight. Can throw it on a slider supported by only one tripod with no problem. And just carrying it around for a long day is a lot easier. It's inconspicuous, and people might think you're just taking photos when you're actually taking video. Interchangeable lenses and lovely low DOF you can get with some lenses and the right settings. Cheap memory cards, compared to the ridiculously expensive P2 cards the HVX uses. I'm sure a time will come when I want to replace what I have, and I am really not sure yet whether I will go with another DSLR or another camcorder. I see strengths and compromises with both. Maybe if I have the money I'll get one of each... Anyway, maybe nobody gives a shit about my insight into video stuff, but there you have it, haha. :) |
I made a video, it's ok I guess. |
anyone playing with a DSLR gimbal? |
^ I have a Glidecam HD2000. Does that count? I use that that quite a bit. Made another video. |
Another one: |
yuuup |
heh, made a little unboxing video. video sucks but the laptop thing is pretty neat |
Tried to fix an old soviet rangefinder. We'll see how everything turned out from the first roll. |
After lots of technical challenges I finally got this thing done. |
^^ that was awesome. The driving footage starting at 4:30 was highlight for me. |

Boring video but I like creating videos.. I just like the clapping shutter sounds |
those last shutter slaps :sweetjesus: you can shuffle cards in there 20 fps? |

ah ok, even a $600 camera can do 11 fps :troll: it was satisfying watching it wiggle in there though...I don't think it's a boring video at all and more entertaining than an unboxing |
^ Hey, thanks! Yes, I think the Nikon 1J5 does like 20fps? with more megapixels too! Crazy technology these days. |
rx100 v does 20mp at 24 fps your soviet camera ever end up working? |
^ hahaha, in Russia, car drives you!! hahaha Yes it did! I fixed it and shot a few rolls. So it works, mechanically... but I'm not sure how the images will turn out as I have not sent them in for development yet. I should do that soon, heh. I'll most likely scan a few images and put together a follow up video just for the hell of it. |
