We are still going to travel, but probably not multi-city until the younger one is 5+.

It goes back to regret not renting a car. I feel like we missed so much taking the train from Nagoya to Takayama and back, and it would have been a lot easier if it was on our schedule instead of having to chase the train. Yes it's a lot more money, we are talking probably 2x to 3x the cost of the train, but it's not unaffordable.

It may just be that we prefer road trip style travel as well. When we did Euro Delivery, being able to hit all the little towns and visit and revisit spots on our own time was amazing. We went back to Eltz in the evening after dinner hoping that the lights would be on, it wasn't, but I did not regret that one bit.
Perhaps I should clarify, I am someone who HATES trip planning. Unfortunately, between GF and I, if I don't plan things we simply won't have a plan at all lol. Also it was literally first time in my life planning like this. Solo trip to Tokyo in Nov 2023 was already a stress inducing first experience for me. So this was next level "wtf where do I even start?" kind of thing.

On the plus side, it was great experience I can use towards other trips now that I know what it involves. The trip itself was amazing too of course. Japan really is the best.

I can say for certainty that renting a car would be ideal because it means cutting down on all the walking and timing of trains. Perhaps in the future if I go with my Dad and his gf we can consider it as an alternative. Getting people in their 70's to average 20,000 steps per day like I did is very likely no bueno lol.

The car is not going to be a win in a big city. We aren't locals and won't know all the nooks and crannies where to park.

It's only useful if you are leaving town and town hopping.

true enough. for places like kawaguchiko, a car would have been a real time saver. even renting bikes would cut down a lot of time in between locations.

I think the funniest thing about them is they've managed to charge $200 for the only thing on earth left that is free. Running.

My friend/coworker (a nurse) asked me one time if I wanted to join them in the Sun Run. I asked her how much it costs and she says $75 (I think). I immediately replied with "why would I want to pay money to do something I hate when I could instead be here earning OT money?"

Yah, I think part of the registration for Sun Run goes to literacy non profits and maybe others. The other part prob goes to cost of traffic management, policing, security, and stuff (like water, bars, food at the end, etc.). But today's BMO, it was over $100 to do the half and ~ $150 for full

I'm not poopooing on these kind of events and saying never, it's an adrenaline rush to run or cycle with 10's of thousands of people, push yourself for time, etc. but just keep it to one or two per summer please. Or, can't you go and run by White Rock or something ... they have water views too, instead of causing DT traffic mayhem.

What products are you using for car care and detail? Looking for recos for someone who hasn't done a full car detail in a long time but is finally getting back into it. I need:

- A slightly higher pH soap for the foam cannon pre-soak
- Clay bar kit
- Cutting polish and/or scratch remover for the paint imperfectiion
- Finishing wax/sealant
- 7 inch pads for my Amazon no-name brand rotary polisher

The key is valued priced, don't want to break the bank, and forgiving for the DIYer, but not so bad quality that it leaves behind residue or some shit.

Thanks!

Busted out my polisher recently to do some headlights and my old pads disintegrated or Velcro failed. I think I'll need to buy some new pads soon too.

I’ve used the porter cable 7424 with meguiars ultimate compound + lake country pads as a casual detailer on all my cars for 7-8 years already with no problems. It gets the job done.

For pure budget (but not bad) I would just use Dawn soap for the strip wash and Turtle Wax Hybrid Ceramic spray wax (this stuff is really great for the weekend warrior) for the finish. Any off the shelf clay bar kit from CT will work fine especially as you're polishing anyways. Any old all purpose cleaner will also work just fine for a one time strip wash (like diluted simple green in a pinch).

For a little more money (or maybe a lot) I'd consider something like CarPro Descale or Lift (I use Descale) and CarPro IronX to strip it then a clay mitt ($$$ - $40-50). A car specific APC is also a suitable choice but they almost always come in a gallon form (or heavily concentrated 1L bottles) like Meguiars ($50). TEC852 ceramic spray is cheap and reliable at this price point but any of the Adam's products on the CT shelf will work fine too.

If you're restocking in general my suggestion for your toolkit would look like:

- Meguiar's Gold Class or CarPro Reset shampoo
- Optimum No Rinse. You can use this on practically everything for light cleaning.
- CarPro PERL. Goes on plastic, rubber, engine bay, leather.
- Any APC from Meguiar's, Optimum, Koch Chemie, or P&S. Handles the wheels and tires as well. If you want to really clean the tires then get CarPro Retyre - really awesome product.
- Any iron remover.
- TEC852 ceramic spray (Super spendy option: Kamikaze Overcoat)

I get everything from Carzilla out of Calgary: https://carzilla.ca

ONR is great as a quick detailer. i don't even use it to do rinseless washes i just use it as a QD. 1oz makes a whole bottle of QD and i worry less about it scratching the car if i put enough on the towel that i would with other QDs. I even use it inside the car to wipe the dash and stuff... not sure if you're supposed to but it's been working great everywhere.

I haven't detailed any of my cars since my kids were born.

The M3 was ceramic coated since new and I've done nothing to it other than handwashing it maybe 3 times a year, and throwing it through the automatic wash a few more times. The coating is definitely not as good as before but it's also 7 years old.

The family SUV goes through too much shit and the coating doesn't last as long.

ONR is like magic - I use it for everything from rinse less washing, quick detailing, interior cleaner, window cleaner, and I use it to clean surfaces (kitchen, tables, glass) in my house too. It can handle anything that's not medium/heavy duty cleaning (like your toilet). It's the Sriracha sauce of car products - this shit goes on everything.

Debatable. Some clays don't like it as ONR will break it down prematurely.

I have a couple older cars (2018 and 2020) that aren't worth investing in PPF or ceramic coating at this time.

And normally I wouldn't be thinking about detailing either except our new house is surrounded by trees and the amount of crud that falls daily on them is astounding. Especially from the cottonwoods, the trees from hell.

So here I am, adding car detailing to my already long list of household chores.
