Anyone following the London junior hockey rape trial? It's gross - what the players did, what Hockey Canada did to cover it up (and what they have done over the years to cover these kinds of things up), and what the cops did to make it go away. The cross examination by the defence is brutal - all 5 players have separate lawyers who are replaying the entire over and over again.
So far the evidence is pretty strong - one of the players texted the woman the next day asking her if she'd gone to the police, the players made her record a video saying it was consensual after the fact.

I've been loosely following the World Junior rape case as well, and while I think the woman has certainly been forced into doing things against her will, I also thought the bastard lawyers are disgustingly doing a convincing job of discrediting the woman, and poking enough holes in her story to the point where I am not very optimistic about the outcome (for the woman).
I hope I'll be proven wrong.

It's gross. There weren't enough things being reported on the Sun newspaper.
I'm telling my wife about niece and nephew on what team players / sports go thru with peer pressure.
It's not uncommon, and these things do happen (esp hockey canada / RCMP etc). Lawyers was even laughed in court when the girl gave her testimony.

Almost always, the ones who are capable of using money wisely don't rely on the lottery or even spend $$ on them. It's the guy who isn't financially wise that spends $50/week (or more) on lottery tix and puts their hope on the jackpot.
Sometimes I'm at a customer service and some guy is ringing up their lottery tickets or claiming their winning tickets and guys got like 5 winners (presumably small amounts) ... I'm thinking to myself, how much do you spend on this on a regular basis?

Used to be like $40 a month, now it's more like $10 a month since I got the PHEV.

Lately, the guys in one of my group chats have started doing a group buy - $8 to buy in per person (1 Lotto Max and 1 6/49) and there's 6 of us. We managed to keep it going with winnings for 4-5 draws (it finally died on Saturday). Once the jackpots get back up to $50m we'll probably do another round.

I had a discussion with our resident anti vaxxer at work, over winning the lotto a few years ago.
I asked him "if you win like a million, what are you gonna do?"
He replies "a million? Whats that.... Cant even buy half a house with that money, probably keep working"
At this point i was mind blown, the dude lives in a trailer park in coquitlam, a million dollars, even after daddy gov takes half, is an insane amount of money.
My brain simply cant wrap around the idea that "1 million" or "20 million" if your supafamous, is like "whats the point, thats nothing". Except im sure supafamous doesnt live in a coquitlam trailer park lol
My antivax coworker isnt wrong that it doesnt get you half a house, but in the same time, 500k cash, in your bank account, in my eyes is any of the following:
-10 years living like a king, solo, around the world
-100 years living like a jobless hippie
-3 supercars parked infront of your trailer home to impress cory and trevor
-Germany + blondes + unlimited nose ski trips (badhobz)
-Working 50% less, immediately, for the average person, and not feeling bad about it till you die
-20% down on a 1 mil unit + payments for the next 5 years.
-buying an entire forest somewhere in the middle of no where, and turning it into a nature reserve / park that can never be sold
RS group buy for lotto tix? (only if its a 50 mil jackpot per person lol) Any less and no thanks.
We can start a new thread after whoever runs it, vanishes off RS one day with our winnings.

iirc lotto winnings aren't taxed in Canada like in the US, so you'll actually get $1M. Invest it and that's an easy $40-50k/yr. Quote:

It'd improve my life in a lot of ways without letting you get too carried away or making it too noticeable to your friends and family so they don't start hounding you for money.

In our lottery group chat some guys have said that if they win a million bucks that we'd never hear from them again but considering COL here I think that number needs to be more like $3-4m. However, I would not ever turn down any lottery winnings, I just won't spend money on tickets unless it's "go fuck yourself" money.

1 million tax free with a 7% return gets you $70,000 per year
If you’ve got a home partially or wholly paid off, could go a long way. But if you own nothing and have no savings or investments yea, it doesn’t mean anything but paying off a roof over your head and counting to work lol
As I’ve said before the bare naked ladies hit “if I had a million dollars” was a time when you might be able to retire or at the very least live an above average lifestyle. Now it’s like you’re still a middle class pleb lol

^ adjusting for inflation since 1992 that'd be about $2M now, so $140k/yr. I think if I had that I could buy my wife a green dress (but not a real green dress, that's cruel).

That's more the trailer park and nothing to do with anti-vaxxing, as I know a few really well-to-do anti-vaxxers. Quote:

Now it’s like you’re still a middle class pleb lol | A million dollars even 20 years ago wouldn't be enough for me to not work, nvm now. If we sell the house and our cars and all our shit, we'd have about 1 million of liquidity, so what? It's true if you come from nothing, or if you are negative to start with, 1 million may give you redemption or a bump start, but not enough to just kick back. Heck give me a million now, I'd still have to work to maintain the current standards of living. And I'll still try to climb the ladder at work as that's partially for my own measure of success.
Unless that person just happens to be super down on luck objectively, not subjectively, 1 million would be amazing. If that person or family are in that position due to just bad life decisions and poor financial knowhow, 1 million isn't going to do anything and in 3 years they'll be back to where they started.

i think a million dollars is definitely life changing to all but the uber rich, even if it can't buy you a house outright.
if it pays for your entire mortgage or lets you retire 10 years sooner, how is that not life changing?
most people who even have the privilege to retire are retiring in their 60s-70s.
if you can retire in your 50s then assuming you have good health, you will be mobile enough to enjoy travelling and have tons of life experiences that might be more difficult in your 60s.
its a huge difference.
