cardio is awesome man, it keeps the bodyfat low and gives you that toned/vein popping look... But for people like me that have virtually no body fat I tend to stay away from it

Thinking of doing 5/3/1 when school starts, does it work like a charm? (assuming i put the work into it.)

Bannanas, oatmeal, yogurt, trail mix, yam, and the list goes on. Foods that are high in complex carbs, eat it around an hour before your workout, and you will feel a difference in energy... you'll notice that you can get a much better pump too compared to an empty stomach

Went to Crossfit Westside to take their powerlifting intro class. It was pretty awesome, I actually learned quite a bit. I learned a lot about my form. Feedback is one thing I don't get when I train alone. Also learned how to do box squats properly.

Some people were impressed at how deep I squat and also my one hand loading of 45 lb bumper plates lol.

Might join for 3 months just to pick up some tips.

Because when it comes to working out, it doesn't matter what you eat immediately before.

Glycogen is what our muscles use as fuel. It is made and converted from carbohydrates. However this process takes longer than "immediately before a workout" to take place.

The glycogen that you burn in a workout is made from the food you ate the night before.

Ask anyone who has worked out fasted, and they will tell you the same thing. Fasted workouts are as energetic (or in the case of insulin insensitive people, even moreso) than non fasted workouts.

In my experience (and anyone who IF's can attest to this) nothing improves a workout more than a solid night of sleep. If you normally sleep 8 hours, great. If you get 9 hours before a workout, you are going to have an even better workout than usual, regardless of diet.

My advice is solid, I just didn't elaborate on it since I was heading out the door when I posted. I expected someone to perhaps ask for an elaboration, but not attempt to "call me out".

So to answer the question again, the best thing you can do pre-workout to improve your workout, if you are unable or unwilling to add stimulants, is to get a good solid night's sleep. Some quick carbs beforehand can help, or they can hinder, it depends on the person. But no advice is as universally solid as just getting enough sleep, and eating enough the day before.

When it comes to workout advice, the answer is almost always going to be one of these two. No matter what the question is, the answer will be:

1) eat more food
2) get more sleep

Specifics like "eat bananas or other slow carbs" (which is a complete oxymoron by the way, there aren't many quicker carbs than bananas) are pointless in the grand scheme of things. Just eat lots of food, get lots of sleep, and watch yourself get big and strong.

If the question was "how do I keep from running into a wall when my workouts last longer than 90-120 minutes" then my answer would be totally different.

For us - people who want to get big and strong - the answer is SLEEP MORE and EAT MORE almost every time. In this case, he needs energy to get through a normal workout, so EAT MORE the night before you SLEEP MORE
