DIY splitter is on now. for those wondering, its a large sheet of birch plywood (iirc 1/2") that is mounted to the chassis via the rally protection, which also ties into the subframe mounted undertray. yes wood is fine, and i want to give it the chance to break away when i inevitably smash into something.

Just call it “forged organic carbon” and bask in the Instagram clout

jabroc (beech composite) is legit

CCA-Dave 07-31-2020 05:43 PM

Yup. Lots of race cars use it.

Dropped it off at the alignment shop today, which might seem backwards as I'm still going to adjust the height, but once it's set I can mark / measure it and return it to the same settings in my shop. But getting that initial setting is far easier with an alignment rack.

The rear still needs some cosmetic issues taken care of, to eliminate the chrome...but I somehow ordered less black anodized bolts than I needed. Doh!

What year is your beetle? is the passenger side mirror stock? My 72 has no passenger mirror I was thinking of adding one.

CCA-Dave 08-01-2020 09:59 AM

This one is a 1968, but heavily modified. The mirrors are not factory, and I'd have to go look up which model they actually are. 1972 Beetles didn't come from the factory with a passenger side mirror (wasn't required by law). Be aware that mirrors sold for the passenger side of your car area actually RHD driver's side mirrors, and utterly useless for driving in North America. You will only be able to see the side trim on your car, and nothing helpful.

The only option is to do a full set of alternative mirrors, such as my '68 has, which require drilling the door and filling the factory mirror hole on the driver's side.

^ Dude I ordered dynamat for my car recently I could not believe how heavy that shit is

JDMDreams 08-22-2020 11:00 AM

I've tried to install sound deadening before and honestly the results doesn't seem to worth the cost or amount of work. It might have made a slight difference but honestly not really that noticable. Only difference is heavier doors and less tin can feeling when you close them.

Started to give the Fiesta a little clean up. The molten orange metallic paint has really grown on me.

Agreed, sound deadening could make marginally improvement, if the factory had already put the right material in. Some people put dynamat in places that do not make any noise, then it just makes the car heavier without noticeable change. From all the cars I've driven, noise mostly come from the glass windows, wheel well (tires), fire wall (engine), and trunk floor (exhaust). So no matter what I put on my Tesla, it won't be dead silence, because noise get into the chassis from the front suspension, but I find there is way less rattling and bass is much pounding after the installation.

Do you get hosed on this? ^ dealers always offer you peanuts for your old car. And are the improvements really worth the upgrade?

I finally got around to putting the new trans cooler line adapters in and putting the cooler itself back on. I ended up doing a full fluid change as well since I wasn't totally sure the shop used the right stuff before and I really don't want to be risking a 30 year old transmission that's a royal PITA to remove to save a few bucks.

A handy trick I learned about was pulling the transmission vent out and filling it from there. It made it a breeze compared to trying to fandangle a tube or something into the fill hole.

That 'fill' hole is a bit ridiculous when it's so easy to remove the breather or even the lock bolt for the shift shaft.

underscore 08-28-2020 09:10 AM

It's really just best used to check the level, but compared to what I'm used to it's pretty decent :lol I have one of those screw on pumps which normally would make it really easy but the Redline bottles don't have normal looking threads for the cap.

roof wrapped with side mirrors / gloss black I’m a big fan of the two tone look

I think the black roof fad is starting to bore me. I've realized that I like being able to see a distinct roofline as opposed to a lump of a black mass as the greenhouse. At this point, manufacturers are overusing it. They've got black roof options on everything now, even the Yaris.

asian_XL 09-10-2020 05:24 PM

isn't it super hot with a black roof?
