Picked up this WRX chew toy today - I'm not a plushie person but this seemed like a fun thing to have inside the vehicle.

Hello! So I took it around the block, rebleed the brakes and did a little trimming etc but noticed an odd starting issue. For a few days it acted like the brand new battery was dying. Would struggle to turn the bike over but by the next day it wouldn’t even start. Battery is full, I even tried other batteries.

https://i.ibb.co/gWSs1tB/9-EA543-A8-...-BB20-CD88.jpg

So I got the multimeter out and traced the switch to relays to starter. Seems the 12v was getting to the starter but it wasn’t turning. Took the case off to confirm and even bench tested it, nothing. Popped it open to check the contacts and it was full of oil???? Wtf but yeah she was toast. Have ordered a new one and hopefully it works.

So instead I dug out the ‘87 gsxr 400 from storage and started looking over that bike. Could get it to turn over but not start (it did start and ran for 10 seconds but turned off and haven’t been able to get it started again.

But then someone odd happened, I got the exact same symptoms as my gsxr 600!! It would barely crank over just as if the battery was dead, then now it just clicks the relay and won’t turn over at all.

I have 3 batteries at home all fully charged, same symptoms across them all. But I find it so hard to believe that 2 bikes at home, 20 year age gap and both starters die in the same 2 days? So I went to my friends house and took his brand new confirmed good battery AND his lithium jump starter pack, tracked the wiring and once again in the exact way it just clicks the relay, I get full ~12v to the starter motor but no cranking. What the fuck is going on

How are the ground wires? Those like to get corroded and it sounds like both of these bikes have been sitting for a while.

320icar 05-06-2023 11:25 PM

Battery cables seem fine. The starter motors are case grounding and they’re bolted to the engine, so they ground fine. And just a single bud 12v+ cable that takes a very simple path (battery —> starter relay —> starter motor)

Gsxr 600 was bench tested with very little movement (have video) and gsxr 400 was jumpered straight to starter motor, still no movement.

Such an odd situation

Did you check if the relay is working? Can you bypass the relay and run power straight to the solenoid?

trollface 05-07-2023 08:54 AM

Multi meter everything

Yepp I said in my post I multimeted both bikes, 12v is going past the relay to the starter motor, but no movement even after a good hammering lol

trollface 05-07-2023 01:23 PM

Time to replace the starter!

I had something similar happen before. I hand turned the motor (car) to get everything moving a little bit and it started working. Guess everything was a little stuck from sitting.

3 points of contact and a flat driveway, looks fine

trollface 05-14-2023 03:45 PM

I only do the wood trick if I'm not getting under it. I don't want to die either.

Badhobz 05-14-2023 04:47 PM

^yeah thats what bothered me. the tiny pieces of wood underneath the jack stands. Also the angle is quite tilted so it makes me nervous the car might slip forward and those pieces of wood shooting out behind dropping the weight purely on that center jack.
