When did the British flag tail lights start going into these? Was that an LCI thing?

good to know!
i wonder if it can be coded so by default the exhaust valves stays closed. that way i can have a quiet cold start using auto start vs me having to get in the car press the exhaust button to close the valve then start the car. edit: on the x5

That's interesting.
On my old 996, I had the factory sport exhaust. By default, the valve was closed, but it was still loud, and it pissed my neighbours off. It's much louder when opened.

That's odd, I thought everything is always quiet mode by default, and you have to go into the hardcore race to get the valves to open, or have enough back pressure. That's why everyone welds them open. I guess BMW sells to the pop and bang crowd now

It's probably relevant for the X5 as well:

I don't know if it's something that can be done on the G chassis cars. The G chassis cars have a lot of options out of the box.

I spoke with my friend about it and he gave me a response.
The valves button should remember last setting, so if you leave it open when you turn off the car, it'll be open when you start the car. Vice versa.
Cold start - nothing he can do about it through coding. Cold start can only be changed via a tune, which I don't think you are interested in atm. A tune of any sort will almost guarantee a flag in the system and a denial of warranty on the engine and drivetrain. BMW has a new directive since iirc 2021 where when a car is being worked on in the dealer, they have to plug it in and it'll do a scan for tampering.
