Ovechkin is absolutely in the right with what he said.

It's not an Ovie specific mentality. Schneider said something very similar last earlier this week, he just used nicer words to deliver the same message.

I wonder about the fineprint in NHL contracts. I'm sure that there is something in there that the player has to comply with terms agreed to by the PA to the NHL. So if the PA decides a 10% rollback is in the best interest of its members, Ovie or anybody else can't say breach of contract and just leave. This is something I'm sure agents would make sure their clients understand.

Part of all the signings this off season, and arguable overpayment in some cases, I think is both agents/players and GMs knowing and expecting that there will be a certain % rolled back.

You have to think about it, if your boss came and told you he is going to take 10-30% of your salary just because some of them are overpaid. What would you do

Try saying that when you do make it big time. The money changes the standard of living for most guys. So imagine not getting a paycheck to fund the lavish lifestyle

I would ask myself "what can I do with 6M that I can't do with 5M?" :p

I don't think you can think of it like that. The problem is that there aren't enough teams in the NHL turning a profit. Of course a big part of a team's expenses are its players' salaries, but when more than half of the league's teams can't turn a profit with a CBA that the OWNERS imposed on the players several years back, there is a greater systemic issue with the health of the league.

If my boss wants to take 10-30% of my salary which we just agreed to to help fund another department that is struggling to break even, I would tell him that's not my responsibility I just work here.

You can also ask the owners of teams which are turning in the big profits what can they do with 50M annual profit that they can't do with 40M? These owners are not using their NHL teams to earn a day to day living and living off rice and potatoes if their team is losing money, it's part of their vast portfolio and in some cases just a playtoy on the side for bragging rights.

BigTrollFace 09-20-2012 07:41 PM

its a part of business, if your losing money move the team

Can anyone let me know where I can start a business and if its starts losing money someone is going to bail my ass and give me free money?

That's what Kesler asks everyday. Compared to some of the new deals out there, Kesler should be getting least 6M and taking a discount at 5M.

I'm surprised he's wearing #32. You'd think he would either demand 8 or the guy wearing it would give it up.

punkwax 09-21-2012 01:25 PM

He looks leaner...

Ovie is the most laid-back player in the NHL. Just the way he acts in interviews and presents himself he sounds like he would be a blast to hang out and get drunk with. Plus I saw one of his bar bills where he spent like $10,000.

Gh0stRider 09-21-2012 05:36 PM

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

The NHL will cancel the Winter Classic between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings if a new CBA is not agreed upon by November, according to a Toronto Star report which cites a league source.
“Gary told (the board of governors) he was going to cancel the Winter Classic in November because he didn’t want the players to use the game as leverage,” the source said.
The report also states thay an NHLPA source says that the players' union has heard the same rumblings. “It’s a scare tactic. It just proves the NHL has no intention of negotiating any time soon.”

Bettman makes 8mil/year.

He makes more than most NHLers and this is counting signing bonuses.

Only 15 players make as much/more.

Spoiler!
