I think he meant the most amount of games played for ONE season. It is actually 71 and may have been a typo by rsx.

Lesson learned. Not only was his head down looking for puck, he never even looked up at the open ice to see if anything was coming his way before burying his head to look for the puck in his feet.

New offer from owners: Highlights of latest proposal from NHL to NHLPA

So the 'hill that the NHL is willing to die on' has been moved a bit, surprise surprise. The tone of the negotiations all along has been to low ball, cry foul and whine, move a little bit towards the players, then repeat. I don't think this is the offer that does it or the final offer either, but the owners are willing to trade and discuss some current items in exchange for other items. So it seems they finally understand how a negotiation works, instead of reading an offer and saying 'screw you guys, Im going home'.

Something new, at least to me, each team is allowed 1 compliance contract buyout.

There are plenty of Byron Ritchies in the sporting world. Excellent players, noticeably better than people in their age group that just fall short of being full time pros. I used to watch my brother play vs. Ritchie all the time out at Sungod arena. He was really good. Mind blowing how great some of these pro athletes are... which is why I facepalm so many of the armchair GMs in this thread

99% of NHLer's are "prodigiy" type players in the minors, theres rarely any mediocre players in the CHL etc who make the NHL

looking up stats after a night of drinking and regurgitating numbers wasn't the best way to get a point across.

Main point, it's sad to see that some people can't transition into the NHL despite putting up numbers in the minors or int'l scene.

Juniors shouldn't play recklessly like this... they should be displaying their skills in a friendly puck battle.

Hard noses hockey should be played during the stanley cup playoffs. You don't do this shit for Olympic hockey either.

2009 wjc still the best displaying pure skills and domination

Go watch an Allstar game if you want a friendly puck battle displaying skill.

Let me know when you're bored.

I dunno what little value you put into the world juniors but to everyone else including the players, it's a big fucking deal.

Right now these are the biggest games of these kids lives. Lots of NHL players have said winning the world juniors ranks right up their in their hockey career.

And you wish for them to hold back on everything they got for the biggest games of their lives? To be nice guys out there? For shame!

Hockey's a contact sport, you can't tell someone to ease up. It's part of the game, you sure as hell won't expect the other team to ease up on you if you have your head down.

So long as it's a clean hit, let the boys play!

When I think of a dirty WJC hit, I think of this

clear shoulder to head contact, yet Pierre Macguire says it's shoulder to chest

These kids grew up playing contact hockey since they were 12 or 14ish. The coaches told them to play till they hear the whistle and to finish their checks. If they don't do that, they ride the pine.

This is how they are taught to play the game, which means they are part of an elite group to play at the WJC, and to represent their own country. If they decided to take a day off, guess what. They are going to be riding the pine the rest of the tournament and a good chance of screwing up whatever chance they had in making the NHL.

For some of these kids, this is going to be the highest level of hockey they play. Some may even get to the AHL, or be like Ritchie and play a few seasons in the NHL but show no where near the game they had as a teenager.

Fuck that.

Maybe if this was a pussy sport but this is goddamn hockey, a sport where fighting is a legal play. Yes, they're kids but let's not forget they're 6'2" 200lbs kids that have trained their whole lives to play a sport and are in better shape than any of us. If they can't take a hit amongst people their own size, they'll get eaten alive when they hit the NHL or the AHL, because they aren't playing junior much longer.

And they're not even like regular kids getting yelled at by parents at the local rink. These are the best 20+ kids in their entire country. Play hard. This is hockey.

MayRay is heading to div2 Swedish league for a month. Might be fun to see him fly with all that open ice in a league lesser than the AHL!

here is a neat little chart comparing the dificulty of playing in various leagues vs the nhl

The league difficulty for the largest NHL feeder leagues is shown below:

League
Difficulty

NHL
1.00

WHA Final Year (1978-79)
0.89

Russian Elite League
0.83

Swedish Elite League
0.78

Czech Republic League
0.74

Finland SM-Liiga
0.54

Deutsche Eishockey League
0.52

WHA First Year (1972-73)
0.46

AHL
0.44

IHL
0.43

Switzerland National League
0.44

NCAA
0.41

Canadian Major Junior
0.29*
* The difficulty of Canadian Major Junior is lower than predicted by this method since major junior players are 20 years old or younger and consequently experience significant skills growth from year-to-year.
